“Portraits of My Community” features a selection of thirty mixed-media artworks portraying the people of Harlem, Washington Heights and Inwood. The project celebrates the intertwining of cultures in our neighborhoods, presenting a social commentary on the diversity, beauty and resilience of longtime residents, newcomers and immigrants. The artist re-purposes packaging materials -the familiar objects we use and discard-, to reflect on environmental issues, while honoring the everyday resilience and joy in our communities. Works from the artist’s ongoing Used/Reused series have been exhibited at El Museo’s (S) Files Biennial, Philosophy Box Gallery, Mark Miller Gallery, and The Bronx Museum.
From October 2021 to June 2022, The Morris-Jumel Mansion will host a series of three pop-up exhibitions featuring the work of local artists, who each reside within the former boundaries of the Morris and Jumel family estates. The series will further Morris-Jumel’s exploration of the connections between the past and the present as these artists reflect upon the museum’s mission and local communities.
