SUMMARY:Word Up Recirculation: Seth Michelson's HOPE ON THE BORDER with David C. Baluarte
DESCRIPTION:Word Up welcomes award-winning professor Seth Michelson to discuss his new book Hope on the Border: Immigration\, Incarceration\, and the Power of Poetry\, a humanizing story of immigration shown through the lens of undocumented\, unaccompanied children and the poems they write. In conversation with Michelson will be David C. Baluarte\, an immigration attorney and CUNY law professor. \n\n“Heartfelt . . . a surprisingly uplifting call to reform an unjust system.” -Publishers Weekly \n\nThis event is a $5 suggested donation ticket with 30 max attendees. Please register in advance. \nIn compliance with Word Up Community Safety guidelines\, all attendees for this event are encouraged to stay masked. \nRecirculation\, a project of Word Up Community Bookshop\, is located at 876 Riverside Drive (near 160th St.) in Washington Heights\, NYC. You can take the 1 train to 157th St.\, A/C train to 163rd St.\, and the M4 and M5 to Broadway and 159/160th. \nABOUT THE BOOK\nIn heart-wrenching prose\, Seth Michelson faces the U.S. immigration crisis head on-by learning and sharing the stories of migrating people fleeing violence and poverty\, and by leading workshops for minors held inside a maximum-security detention center. Highlighting the experiences of people desperate for safety\, Michelson tirelessly fights for justice and their freedom. Guided through the powerful medium of poetry\, the children share their pasts\, struggles\, hopes\, and dreams. Among them\, Carlitos\, a 13-year-old boy who escaped a gang to try to make a safe and honest life on his own after his mother’s death\, and Karla\, a teenager whose family begged her to flee for safety after she was shot. Remarkably\, they and other children from similar circumstances express themselves with honesty\, passion\, and optimism for a better future. \nMichelson also introduces us to migrating people at the border\, including a woman who was chased from her home amid violence\, and a dedicated father who was arrested and beaten while searching for work to make a more secure life for his wife and daughter. \nWhether relating experiences in a Mexican refugee camp or a U.S. immigration detention center\, Michelson’s prose is brisk and gripping\, offering hard-earned insights into ways we might create a better immigration system that treats all people with dignity. \nABOUT THE AUTHOR\nSeth Michelson is an award-winning professor who has gained recognition from the National Endowment of the Arts and the Fulbright Foundation. He is the author of academic articles\, book introductions\, film and book reviews\, and fourteen books of poetry and poetry in translation. His work has been published in English and Spanish in Argentina\, Mexico\, England\, and Italy\, among other countries. He currently teaches at Washington and Lee University in Virginia where he is the chair of Latin American and Caribbean Studies. He lives in Charlottesville\, Virginia. \nABOUT THE MODERATOR\nDavid C. Baluarte (he/él) joined CUNY School of Law as the Senior Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and a Professor of Law in January 2024. Baluarte is an advocate\, teacher\, and scholar in the areas of immigration\, refugee and statelessness protection\, and international human rights. He has written numerous journal articles\, academic studies\, human rights reports\, and participated in various grant-funded projects and high-profile impact litigation initiatives in these areas.

SUMMARY:Inwood Art Works: FantAsia!
DESCRIPTION:FantAsia! is a vibrant celebration of Asian music\, traditions\, and cuisine.  Featuring INTERWOVEN \nHighlighting the program are three world-premiere compositions that interlace Asian and Western musical worlds\, inspired by ancient legends\, traditional dances\, and shared philosophies. Join us as we welcome the Year of the Horse together! \nFantAsia\, celebrates the sound of the East and West\, past and present. The concert opens with performances of historic Eastern Asian melodies\, featuring instruments such as the koto (Japanese zither) played by Yoko Reikano Kimura\, piri & saenghwang (Korean wind instruments) performed by Gamin\, and the erhu (Chinese two-stringed instrument) played by Andy Lin. As the audience becomes acquainted with the traditional sounds of Asia\, the program shifts to new compositions that intertwine the sonorities of the East and West\, written by American composers such as Hung-Ping Chang and Jay Reise. \nThroughout the performance\, some of our musicians will offer brief explanations\, introducing the instruments and sharing the cultural and philosophical inspirations behind the pieces—connecting the audience to the myths\, aesthetic objects\, and traditions of Asia. Our performances are designed to be accessible to anyone interested in exploring unfamiliar sounds and ideas. While there is an educational component to our program\, no prior knowledge of Asian culture is required—just an open mind and curiosity. \nBring your family and meet your friends to enjoy an afternoon community concert of classical music. All are welcome! \nReception with light snacks and beverages following the performance. \nAll proceeds benefit Good Shepherd Church

SUMMARY:Hispanic Society: Fashion in Illuminated Manuscripts--A Conversation with Amanda Wunder
DESCRIPTION:Fashion in the Hispanic Society’s Collection of Illuminated Manuscripts: A Conversation with Amanda Wunder\nJoin us for a moderated conversation with Amanda Wunder\, the curator of the exhibition Spanish Style: Fashion Illuminated\, 1550-1700. Inspired by Spain’s imperial expansion\, elite fashion in 16th and 17th century Spain underwent a profound transformation\, producing opulent garments that radically reshaped the human body and projected an air of wealth and nobility. The talk will focus on the way Professor Wunder utilized the Hispanic Society’s tremendous collection of illuminated manuscripts to chart the development of elite style in early modern Spain. \nThe program begins with light refreshments\, followed by the conversation and a viewing of the exhibition. \nThis conversation is presented in partnership with The Drawing Foundation and forms part of their programming for Drawings Week 2026. \nThe event is free and open to the public. RSVPs are required.

SUMMARY:United Palace: THE MUSE--OFFERINGS TO THE ANCESTORS
DESCRIPTION:The Grand Foyer of the United Palace will be transformed into a radiant ancestral altar—a sacred space to honor those who came before us. Now in its third consecutive year\, this annual gathering draws inspiration from Día de los Muertos and All Saints Day\, inviting us to remember\, celebrate\, and commune with the ancestors who continue to shape our lives. \nGuests are invited to bring photos (copies) for the altar\, and to write messages of gratitude\, remembrance\, or guidance to ancestors known and unknown. Together\, we’ll weave these gestures into a collective tribute\, culminating in a group meditation and other artistic offerings that open our hearts to wisdom and renewal. \nThis event is free with RSVP.   Door at 6:30 \nThe Muse is a monthly program dedicated to celebrating inspiration\, the arts\, and community. It brings together open-minded artists and art lovers to explore the many ways inspiration\, or The Muse\, elevates our daily lives. Through shared human experiences\, creative expression\, and a deep love for the arts\, we reflect on life’s biggest questions\, uncovering new meaning in the world around us. \n  \n
