Please register in advance. \nThe Dominican-American poet and novelist Julia Alvarez burst onto the literary scene and blazed a trail for a generation of Latino authors .  Her semi-autobiographical novel\, How the Garcia Girls Lost Their Accents\, was published in 1991\, followed in 1994 by In the Time of the Butterflies\, which sold over a million copies and raised global awareness about life under Dominican dictator Rafael Trujillo. Alvarez’s work includes three nonfiction books\, 3 poetry collections\, 11 books for children and young adults and 7 literary novels. This new documentary opens a window into her extraordinary journey from an idyllic\, privileged childhood in the Dominican Republic to a life of exile in New York City to a brilliant literary career that shows no sign of slowing down. At 74\, she recently published the critically acclaimed novel The Cemetery of Untold Stories. \nFilmed in the U.S. and the Dominican Republic\, it features extensive interviews with Alvarez\, her family\, and her literary contemporaries. DESCRIPTION:Undocumented Women’s Fund invites you to our annual outdoor Translocal Feminist Film Series\, “Immigrant Women: resisting and re-existing” ( \nAs the criminalization of immigrant communities intensifies and our already precarious access to basic social services is curtailed\, we have curated a list of films that highlight the intersecting character of our struggles–whether over labor rights\, access to social services\, and/or against surveillance\, detention and deportation. In its fifth year\, our Film Series also celebrates the resilience\, sisterhood\, solidarity and life-sustaining labor performed by immigrant women and gender expansive people. \nJoin us throughout August for three bilingual (English/Spanish) screenings: \n🪶 Saturday 8/30\, Hummingbirds (2024) dir Estefanía “Beba” Contreras and Silvia Del Carmen Castaños \nEnglish with Spanish subtitles \nIn Hummingbirds\, Silvia and Beba tell their own coming-of-age story\, transforming their hometown on the Texas-Mexico border into a wonderland of creative expression and activist hijinks. Filmed collaboratively over the final summer of their fleeting youth\, their cinematic self-portrait celebrates the power of friendship and joy as tools of survival and resistance. \n  \n🚨 All screenings will be at Haven plaza (711W 168th St NYC 10032 across from Barnes and Noble). \n  \n⏱️Doors open at 6:30 and film will begin at 7:30\, followed by an open discussion lead by fellow organizers and filmmakers. \n  \n📍Stay tuned for the details on sister screenings in cities throughout Mexico and Central America. \n  \n💲Donations will be collected at the door\, but nobody will be turned away for lack of funds.Come prepared: we will have food by local vendors\, drinks and merch for sale!

Alfred Hitchcock crafts an unforgettable story about a secretary on the run for embezzlement that takes refuge at a secluded California motel owned by a repressed man and his overbearing mother. \nPre-show local dance performance by Leadlights Ensemble begin at 7:00pm. \nFood and drink are available for purchase at the venue. Capacity is currently limited to 200 people and admission is free only with RSVP ticket. Unclaimed tickets will be released to the walk-up wait list ten minutes before the film starts. Walk-ups will then be admitted on a first-come\, first-served basis. Seating for 100 people will be provided on a first-come\, first-served basis\, but you can also bring your own folding chairs if you prefer.
