SUMMARY:MJM Virtual Parlor Chat: Food\, Hunger\, Scarcity and General Washington’s Continental Army
DESCRIPTION:What did the soldiers of the Continental Army eat to fuel their fight for independence? What about the officers or General George Washington? Food insecurity was a monumental challenge faced by all those involved in the American Revolution. John Ota\, a bestselling and award winning author of books such as “The Kitchen” (2021 Taste Canada Awards finalist and a 2021 Paris Gourmand Cookbook finalist) and the newly released book “The Dining Room” joins the Mansion to discuss what these rations would have looked like for throughout the ranks. Ota’s deep research into the foodways of the Revolution will offer a detailed and thoughful lecture on the true circumstances of the Military encampment and headquarters menus – including what would have been eaten by soldiers and Generals alike when stationed at the MORRIS-JUMEL MANSION. \nFrom soldier’s rations to George Washington’s war time birthday celebrations\, learn about the culinary history of the American Revolution. \nThis is a virtual event;link will be emailed upon registration.

SUMMARY:Lost Inwood: - Uptown’s Springs\, Wells\, and Water - (April)
DESCRIPTION:LOST INWOOD \n– Uptown’s Springs\, Wells\, and Water – \n-TUESDAY APRIL 7th at 7:30PM- \nWater. We all need it. But running household tap water wasn’t available to Inwood residents until the latter part of the 1800s. Before it became possible to simply turn on a faucet\, how did people get fresh water to drink and use? And when did municipal water arrive in Inwood? \nThis month at LOST INWOOD we’ll discover the fascinating network of springs\, wells\, creeks and canals which dotted northern Manhattan and Inwood. We’ll use our virtual dowsing rods to trace their story. Where were Inwood’s springs and wells of yesteryear? Are any of them still around? You might be surprised. \nPlease join us Tuesday Apr 7th at 7:30pm. It’s free to the public\, but reservations are recommended. Hope to see you there! \nDon Rice \n  \nTHE INWOOD FARM \n600 West 218th Street (corner Indian Road) \ntel 212-884-2111 \nReservations can be made by email: monicajjones@icloud.com

SUMMARY:Virtual Parlor Chat: Trapped Between Armies: New York Women in the Neutral Zone
DESCRIPTION:The American Revolution was largely fought in the backyards of civilians\, especially in New York. After the British took control of New York City in the fall of 1776\, with the Americans retreating north of the Croton River\, the area in between became known as the Neutral Ground or Neutral Zone. \n\n\nFor eight long years\, this area\, which included all of Philipse Manor\, saw unprecedented levels of military battles and skirmishes\, vigilante violence\, and “foraging” for military supplies from the very civilians the armies were purporting to liberate from the enemy. Women were often caught in the middle\, as they struggled to maintain households with men joining armies\, tried to protect themselves and their children from military and vigilante violence including sexual violence\, and to protect their properties and foodstuffs from barn burnings\, cattle rustlers\, and marauding “foragers.” Some had strong political views on the conflict. Others simply tried to survive. \nThis talk will examine the lives of women in the Neutral Zone more broadly as well as specific stories of individual women including Mary Philipse Morris and Elizabeth Williams Rutgers Philipse\, Ann Fisher Miller\, Grace Isaacs Babcock\, and Black Loyalists such as Eleanor Fleming and Lydia Tompkins. \n\n\n

SUMMARY:Dyckman Farmhouse: [VIRTUAL] Talking About Race Matters 2025: “Living Afro-Latina Lives: An Afrodiasporic Feminist Approach to Understanding Identity Formation and Political Consciousness” with Dr. Yalidy Matos
DESCRIPTION:Date: September 25\, 2025\nTime: 6pm-7pm\nCost: FREE! \nRegistration Required? YES! Register HERE! \nLocation: Virtual via Zoom \nJoin us for DFM’s Talking About Race Matters virtual lecture series with Dr. Yalidy Matos\, Associate Professor of Political Science at Rutgers University–New Brunswick\, as she presents her newest research\, Living Afro-Latina Lives: An Afrodiasporic Feminist Approach to Understanding Political Consciousness. \nLiving Afro-Latina Lives: An Afrodiasporic Feminist Approach to Understanding Political Consciousness explores how Afro-Latinas— whether born in the U.S. or abroad but primarily residing in the United States—identify and construct their identities\, and how they engage with broader identity categories. Crucially\, the work traces the shift from individual identification to the development of an intersectional Afro-Latina political consciousness. This consciousness isn’t just about how they see themselves—it’s about how they act\, what they believe\, and how they engage politically. Rooted in Black feminist thought\, this intersectional Afro-Latina political consciousness has real consequences for political attitudes and behavior. This works examines how identity becomes action\, and how Afro-Latina lives illuminate the power of lived experience in shaping political life. \nYalidy Matos is Associate Professor of political science at Rutgers University – New Brunswick. Her scholarship sits at the intersection of race\, ethnicity\, gender\, and politics\, immigration\, and identity politics. Her book Moral and Immoral Whiteness in Immigration Politics (OUP) was published in 2023. She graduated from Ohio State University in Columbus\, OH with a PhD in Political Science in 2015\, and Connecticut College in New London\, CT with a Bachelor of Arts in Government and Gender and Women’s Studies in 2009. \nTalking About Race Matters is supported\, in part\, by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council\, and made possible by The Cowles Charitable Trust and the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature.

SUMMARY:Back Porch History 2025: “Kingsbridge at the Dawn of the Revolution” with Nick Dembowski
DESCRIPTION:1775 was 250 years ago. At that time the people of Kingsbridge did not know that the most dramatic and violent 8 years in the history of the area were about to begin. The Revolutionary War would transform the neighborhood from a lush and fertile farming community into a muddy battle-scarred military camp with forts on every hilltop. For the community that was here\, 1775 was the year that everything changed. The men of the area formed a militia for defense and the Continental Congress ordered the area fortified. But why here? Why did George Washington consider it a “pass of the utmost importance?” And how did local people feel about the ideas and events that were reshaping America and their lives? \nOn August 27th at 6:00 PM\, join us for Dyckman Farmhouse Museum’s LAST Back Porch History lecture of the season featuring historian Nick Dembowski\, who will take you on a virtual tour of Kingsbridge and northern Manhattan in the years before the war\, leading up to the Declaration of Independence. \nNick Dembowski is a Bronx local historian and Executive Director of the Kingsbridge Historical Society. He was the lead curator of the Kingsbridge Remembers 1775-1783 exhibit at the Kingsbridge Historical Society. He is also the Site Historian of the Van Cortlandt House Museum. \nDate: Wednesday\, August 27th \nTime: 6-7pm \nRegistration: Zoom registration required. \nCost: FREE! \nLivestream? YES! Register using the link in our bio! \nLocation: Livestream via Zoom and in person at Dyckman Farmhouse Museum (on the corner of 204th and Broadway)

SUMMARY:Bruce's Garden Summer Readings
DESCRIPTION:Geoff Wisner on George Tempelton Strong’s Civil War Diaries\nGeorge Templeton Strong: Civil War Diaries (Library of America\, 2026) Geoff Wisner\, editor. \nGeoff Wisner is an author and editor whose work is published widely. In his latest book\, the noted Thoreau scholar turned his keen editorial insights to the prolific diarist George Templeton Strong’s writings on the Civil War. These writings are remarkably vivid and suffused with novelistic detail. Strong wrote eyewitness accounts of the 1863 Draft Riots\, field hospitals teeming with wounded men\, and his meetings with both Grant and Lincoln. This book is greatly anticipated by scholars\, and should also be a great read for all interested in New York history.

SUMMARY:Building the Bridge to a Post-Growth World | Climate Week NYC
DESCRIPTION:As temperatures rise and the world careens past its carbon emissions goals\, proponents of “de-growth” present a compelling framework to refashion our economic life around “human flourishing and ecological stability\, rather than around the constant accumulation of capital” (Jason Hickel). Chris Whittaker–Fordham Law J.D. candidate\, co-leader of Fordham’s Climate Law Equity & Sustainability Initiative\, and Washington Heights neighbor–presents an introduction to de-growth theory that invites everyone to critically examine the assumptions that underlie our economic life\, introducing the concepts of planetary boundaries\, the myth of decoupling growth from extraction\, how debt drives environmental degradation\, and how public money and public banking could provide a path to a post-growth society. Hosted by Fort Washington Collegiate Church.

SUMMARY:RESHEDULED - Dyckman Farmhouse: Bearing Witness: An Update on the Journey Toward Collaboration\, Repair and Return at the Inwood Sacred Site and African Burial Ground
DESCRIPTION:Bearing Witness: An Update on the Journey Toward Collaboration\, Repair and Return at the Inwood Sacred Site and African Burial Ground \nBy Peggy King Jorde and Rachel Watkins \nThursday\, August 29th at 6PM on the back porch at DFM \nIn Inwood until  the late 1800s\, the Dyckman and Nagel family cemeteries remained with grave markings\, enclosed by a fence\, and appeared to be a well kept rural cemetery. A few hundreds yards away were unmarked graves of enslaved Africans. During rapid development in the early 20th century\, the site was discovered in March of 1903\, and again\, no means of protection came for those buried in this hilly knoll\, and the bodies were exhumed\, examined\, and stolen. \nThe location of the Inwood Sacred Site lies between today’s 211th and 212th Streets\, between Broadway and 10th Avenue. Until recently\, this block was occupied by various Auto Shops and P.S. 98 – Shorac Kappock’s faculty parking lot. The local community of Inwood is fighting to raise awareness and gain recognition of this sacred site that was sadly desecrated a century ago. Hear from the team behind the Inwood Sacred Site Memorial at this session of Back Porch History at the Dyckman Farmhouse Museum.

SUMMARY:“I Was Their Midwife”: Pregnancy\, Childbirth\, and Motherhood on Seventeenth-Century Slave Ships
DESCRIPTION:“I was their midwife”: Pregnancy\, Childbirth\, and Motherhood on Seventeenth-Century Slave Ships \nBy Dr. Andrea Mosterman \nAugust 28th at 12PM\nVIRTUAL; FREE\nRegister here \nShips are usually seen as masculine spaces\, and slave ships are no exception. But as the slave voyages database shows\, about a fourth of the captives transported on board seventeenth and eighteenth-century Dutch slavers were in fact women. In this presentation\, I explore the experiences of women on board these slavers\, paying special attention to pregnancy\, childbirth\, and motherhood in these spaces.

SUMMARY:Dyckman Farmhouse: “Bled\, Cupped\, Blister’d and Purged”—Healthcare in the 18th and Early 19th Centuries
DESCRIPTION:“Bled\, Cupped\, Blister’d and Purged”—Healthcare in the 18th and Early 19th Centuries \nBy Dr. Gretchen Sorin \nAugust 7th at 6:30PM \nVIRTUAL VIA ZOOM \nRegister here \nHealthcare in the time of the Dyckman Farmhouse\, the 18th and early 19th centuries\, was dramatically different from healthcare and wellness today\, although we can see vestiges of this time in some current practices. The people of the enlightenment made some moves toward cleanliness\, but\, the lack of indoor plumbing and body cleansing\, the difficulty of finding clean water\, and the lack of sewage systems contributed to a host of health problems\, as did a limited number of effective medicines. Inspired by an exhibition developed by the Cooperstown Graduate Program\, “Health and Hygiene at a 19th century Farmhouse\,” this talk will highlight medical practices in this period and the care available to both wealthy landowners and the enslaved people who shared their households.
