Joining Derby will be Anne Eller (long durée Hispaniola history)\, René Cordero (post-Trujillo corruption and drug trafficking)\, and Lizabeth (Lisa) Paravisini-Gebert (vodou/vodú)\, each presenting on their research topics. \nAfter the reading\, there will be a performance from Orchestre Moto. Orchestre Moto is a New York and Los Angeles-based band with a constellation of roots\, from Kinshasa to Brazzaville\, Lubumbashi to Pointe-Noire\, dedicated to showcasing the Congolese sound. Moto means “fire” in Lingala: a name that reflects the explosive\, high-energy African dance music they bring to the stage. The ensemble performs genres such as rumba\, sebene\, mutuashi\, and ndombolo—styles born in post-independence Africa that blend traditional rhythms with electric guitar and Afro-Cuban influences. \nThis event is a $5 suggested donation ticket.  Please register in advance.

The program begins with Anna Clyne’s Restless Oceans\, a thrilling contemporary work for chamber orchestra that channels the turbulence and strength of the sea. This work draws inspiration and its title from A Woman Speaks – a poem by Audre Lorde.  Next on the program\, WHCO is joined by Ariadne Greif for Samuel Barber’s Knoxville: Summer of 1915\, a nostalgic meditation on childhood and place\, set to the words of James Agee. Concluding our program is Felix Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 3 “Scottish”\, a sweeping tribute to the rugged romance of the Scottish Highlands. \nThis concert will be approximately 1hr\, no intermission. The concert includes vibrant works by Carolyn Yarnell\, Sarah Bassingthwaighte\, Elisenda Fábregas\, Yu Hui Chang\, Kirsten Volness\, Lynn Bechtold and Jean Coulthard. \nWildLine is a new project-based chamber music ensemble\, initiated by flutist Tessa Brinckman\, that imagines\, nurtures and performs all kinds of sound worlds\, ancestries and futures. Based in the wilds of northern Manhattan the ensemble has launched their first concert series season\, Still Here | One\, Two and Three in NYC. \nThe Morris-Jumel Mansion is Manhattan’s oldest surviving residence. The Morris-Jumel Mansion\, built in 1765\, preserves\, collects\, and interprets history\, culture\, and the arts to explore inclusive narratives that engage and inspire diverse audiences. Currently\, the Museum is undergoing a long-awaited resoration and accessibility project. While temporarily closed until Spring 2026\, the Mansion is offering a diverse array of off-site and virtual programming to continue serving audiences of all ages.

SUMMARY:HVG Lounge: Violin-Piano Recital
DESCRIPTION:Hudson View Gardens Performing Arts group presents HVG’s own pianist David Kalhous and the award-winning violinist Benjamin Sung for a concert in The Lounge on Sunday\, March 22\, 2026 at 5 pm. \nThe program features music by some of the most celebrated German and Czech composers: Johann Sebastian Bach’s virtuosic Sonata in E Major for violin and harpsichord\, Leoš Janáček’s wondrous Sonata written in 1914\, and a work by one of the most original Czech composers of the early 20th century\, Vítězslava Kaprálová. A highlight of the program is the Fantasy in C Major by Franz Schubert\, which is one of the most challenging pieces in the violin-piano repertoire. \nIn addition to being an HVG resident\, Kalhous is a familiar face at The Lounge\, having most recently performed in the “Friends & Neighbors Concert” last December. He teaches at Florida State University alongside Benjamin Sung\, and the two musicians are frequent collaborators. Sung is also a Faculty Artist and Violin Coordinator at the Brevard Music Center\, where he serves as Concertmaster of the Brevard Opera Orchestra. \nThe concert is open to the public; admission is $20 suggested donation ($15 for seniors/students; under 8 free) at the door\, at The Lounge at HVG (128 Pinehurst Ave at West 183rd Street in Manhattan).
