DESCRIPTION:Community League of the Heights and Jazz Power Initiative present Latin Jazz In The Heights \nCome early at 3pm for Latin genre dance lessons with Junior Belone \nFollowed at 5pm by our featured performance…Boba’s Latin Jazz Ensemble with Isidro Bobadilla (El Boba)\, Master Percussionist and Arts Educator. \nBobadilla worked under well known Dominican musicologist\, Professor Fradique Lizardo\, in the study of traditional Dominican rhythms\, composing music for the ballets Ritos\, Redes by Lizardo\, José Antonia\, and Africa Ingmar Despradel.  He has led and presented in numerous workshops\, talks\, and demonstrations about Dominican folk music at universities and various cultural centers.  An active teaching artist in the Tri State area\, he has taught percussion at the Washington Heights Community Conservatory in New York\, and Alianza Cultural Center. \n

DESCRIPTION:Hudson View Gardens Performing Arts Group presents an evening of jazz with the Randal Despommier Quartet at The Lounge at HVG \nThe quartet’s program celebrates the vinyl release of South – a New Orleans-roots record – and also includes new tunes and arrangements including poetry in Farsi. The Randal Despommier Quartet grew out of the New Orleans born-and-bred bandleader’s long-running duo collaboration with HVG’s own pianist Jason Yeager. Appearing with the group at Hudson View Gardens are bassist Kelsey Mines\, drummer Jay Sawyer\, and guest vocalist Mahya Hamedi. \nThe concert is open to the public; admission is $20 suggested donation ($15 for seniors/students; under 8 free) at the door. The audience is invited to meet the performers at a post-performance wine reception.

DESCRIPTION:Founded in 2011 by clarinetist Pascal Archer\, Exponential Ensemble is a mixed chamber music collective that comprises New York City’s top-notch performers and teaching artists. DESCRIPTION:Lamine Thiam: founder/composer/singer/djembe drum/bandleader\nAlejandro (Al) Castro: 5-string bass\nSidney (Sid) Whelan: guitar \nOur repertoire comprises new compositions based on traditional West African music\, blues\, funk and jazz. In this ensemble we’re centered around the djembe as the lead instrument. In addition\, Lamine has his own approach to tuning the djembe that allows for a greater range of overtones. Together with voice\, bass and guitar\, this creates a vibe that’s both unique and hypnotic. \nLamine Thiam is a percussionist\, singer\, dancer\, choreographer\, actor and educator based in New York City. Originally from Senegal\, he has worked and performed internationally and is currently on the dance faculty at SUNY Purchase. While his mastery of the art form is unquestionable\, Lamine views himself as a lifelong student and holds humility as being essential to the development of artistic excellence. \nAl Castro is an electric bassist and guitarist who is interested in the music of the African diaspora. He has performed in a variety of rock and Latin music ensembles. \nSid Whelan is an experienced and versatile guitarist who gears his playing towards the songs and the ensemble of the moment. In this context that typically means percussive West African funk guitar ostinatos alternating with Lamine’s melodic phrases; punchy ensemble breaks and improvised blues solos.
