SUMMARY:Word Up: Rising in the Heights with artists Randy Mason & Jamell Ogbanna
DESCRIPTION:Hip-hop artist Randy Mason and keyboardist Jamell Ogbanna join Leadlights Ensemble for a hopeful afternoon of hip hop\, rhyme\, and string music\, featuring Change Sings: A Children’s Anthem by Amanda Gorman. \nFree copies of the book will be available. \nRising in the Heights is a festival of free outdoor public arts performances curated by Leadlights Ensemble in partnership with Word Up Community Bookshop. The festival celebrates the rich artistic contributions of Latinx and Black cultures and promotes children’s literacy through music and bilingual storytelling. \nRandy Mason is a Bronx hip hop artist\, songwriter\, cajón percussionist\, educator\, pastor\, and family man whose life and art reflect the heartbeat of faith\, rhythm\, and community. Fusing the raw energy of New York City hip hop with the rich traditions of Afro-Peruvian percussion\, Randy creates a one-of-a-kind sound that inspires\, educates\, and uplifts. \nBorn and raised in the Bronx\, the birthplace of hip hop\, Randy’s music embodies his Puerto Rican and African American heritage. His performances blend storytelling\, live instrumentation\, and lyrical depth — a celebration of culture\, creativity\, and hope. Whether performing on stage\, teaching in classrooms\, or preaching from the pulpit\, Randy brings the same message. \nAs a hip hop educator and founder of R.H.Y.M.E. (Rhymes Help Young Minds Excel)\, Randy uses rap\, writing\, and rhythm to mentor youth throughout New York City. His innovative programs help students discover their voices\, develop confidence\, and dream beyond their circumstances. \nBeyond the mic\, Randy is a devoted husband\, father\, and arts and mentoring program director committed to empowering communities through creativity. With every beat\, rhyme\, and classroom moment\, Randy Mason continues to prove that hip hop is more than music — it’s ministry\, mentorship\, and movement.

SUMMARY:Sugar Hill Children's Museum: Harlem Quartet
DESCRIPTION:Beethoven\, Wynton Marsalis\, William Bolcom\, William Grant Still + more \nIn many ways\, Ludwig van Beethoven’s turbulent and fiercely concentrated Op. 95 “Serioso” Quartet points toward the restless individuality that defines so much American music today. Its sharp contrasts\, rhythmic urgency\, and emotional directness resonate across genres and generations—from the jazz-infused classical language of William Bolcom\, to the stylistic fluency and improvisatory spirit of Wynton Marsalis\, the lyrical originality of William Grant Still\, and the virtuosic cross-cultural voice of Aldo López-Gavilán. Though separated by centuries and traditions\, these composers share a commitment to breaking boundaries while speaking in unmistakably personal voices. \nAll Ages Welcome!\nPlease Register.

SUMMARY:WHCO: Concierto de MainStage: Breaking Barriers
DESCRIPTION:September 19th at 7:30 pm – 9:00 pm\n\n\n\n\nJoin the WHCO as we kick off our 2026–27 season dedicated to exploring Resiliencia con Rompiendo barreras \, a program celebrating those brave and bold artistic voices that defied the expectations of their time. \nRepertorio: \n\nIgor Stravinsky:  Dumbarton Oaks\nAndrea Casarrubios:  Heritage\nLouise Farrenc: Sinfonía n.º 3\n\nThe concert will last approximately one hour\, without an intermission. Afterwards\, there will be a reception with the musicians. \n\nRompiendo barreras  comienza con  Dumbarton Oaks\, Igor Stravinsky’s ingenious and elegant chamber concerto\, inspired by Johann Sebastian Bach’s Brandenburg Concertos . Herencia (“Heritage”) by Andrea Casarrubios is a deeply personal reflection on memory\, identity\, and cultural roots. Inspired by the composer’s Spanish heritage\, the work intertwines lyrical melodies and evocative textures in a moving musical tribute to the traditions and stories that have spanned generations. We conclude our program with Louise Farrenc’s Symphony No. 3. Completed in 1847\, this is generally considered the pinnacle of her orchestral output. Combining the balance of Classicism with the intensity of Romanticism\, the work demonstrates a masterful command of orchestral color\, dramatic structure\, and lyrical invention\, reaffirming her place among the leading symphonic composers of her time.
