DESCRIPTION:In loving memory of Tom Burgess \nUptown Record Fair is back for its third year with specialty sale items from the Recirculation archives\, plus record vendors\, vinyl DJs\, and more.   Fans of Recirculation already know that when the project first opened\, it was stocked to the rafters with not only the thousands of books collected by our late friend and volunteer Tom Burgess–but also by his records. His collection was so vast that even after distributing large donations to music non-profits\, per Tom’s wishes\, we still had enough left over to maintain a whole music section in the store. Along the way\, volunteers have set aside scores of specialty items\, which will make up the core of the Recirculation booth at the Uptown Record Fair. \nWe’re collecting vinyl donations for the fair! Your donation will go towards keeping the lights on at Recirculation. Donations are tax-deductible. Please email open_in_newrecirculation@wordupbooks.com for more information. \nBut it won’t just be us! We will have several other vendors join us\, setting up tables to offer goods across the musical spectrum–jazz\, rock\, hip-hop\, blues\, experimental\, you name it. \nProviding the soundtrack to the day will be vinyl-centric DJs from uptown and beyond\, including a special set culled from Tom Burgess’ collection. \nThis is a fundraiser for Recirculation. A $5-10 suggested donation is encouraged for entry\, but not required.

DESCRIPTION:FantAsia! is a vibrant celebration of Asian music\, traditions\, and cuisine.  Featuring INTERWOVEN \nHighlighting the program are three world-premiere compositions that interlace Asian and Western musical worlds\, inspired by ancient legends\, traditional dances\, and shared philosophies. Join us as we welcome the Year of the Horse together! \nFantAsia\, celebrates the sound of the East and West\, past and present. The concert opens with performances of historic Eastern Asian melodies\, featuring instruments such as the koto (Japanese zither) played by Yoko Reikano Kimura\, piri & saenghwang (Korean wind instruments) performed by Gamin\, and the erhu (Chinese two-stringed instrument) played by Andy Lin. As the audience becomes acquainted with the traditional sounds of Asia\, the program shifts to new compositions that intertwine the sonorities of the East and West\, written by American composers such as Hung-Ping Chang and Jay Reise. \nThroughout the performance\, some of our musicians will offer brief explanations\, introducing the instruments and sharing the cultural and philosophical inspirations behind the pieces—connecting the audience to the myths\, aesthetic objects\, and traditions of Asia. Our performances are designed to be accessible to anyone interested in exploring unfamiliar sounds and ideas. While there is an educational component to our program\, no prior knowledge of Asian culture is required—just an open mind and curiosity. \nBring your family and meet your friends to enjoy an afternoon community concert of classical music. DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, January 15\, 2026 – 6:30pm  – 8:30pm\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRECIRCULATION A project of Word Up\n876 Riverside Drive (near 160th St.)\n\nNew York\, NY 10032\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \nZine y los espacios: Una conversación sobre cómo la comunidad\, los zines y la memoria son herramientas de liberación\nZine & Spaces: A conversation about how community\, zines\, and memory become tools for liberation\nEsta conversación explora cómo los espacios comunitarios están evolucionando para dar la bienvenida a formas alternativas de digerir\, compartir y amplificar el arte — particularmente fanzines. Como un medio decolonial\, los fanzines ofrecen una manera de democratizar el conocimiento\, reclamar independencia creativa\, y centrar la comunidad como el autor primario de cómo sus historias\, su arte y su sabiduria son comunicadas. \nThis conversation explores how community spaces are evolving to welcome alternative forms of digesting\, sharing\, and amplifying art — particularly zines. As a decolonial medium\, zines offer a way to democratize knowledge\, reclaim creative independence\, and center the community as the primary author of how its stories\, art\, and wisdom are communicated. \nHosting this event at Word Up Community Bookshop\, a space deeply rooted in community-led storytelling and cultural exchange\, is an opportunity to strengthen connections with the Dominican diaspora living beyond NYC. It allows us to continue uplifting dissident experiences and to contribute to a broader movement that is redefining how we want our knowledge\, memories\, and imaginations to be shared and preserved.

Volunteers will learn how to aerate\, cultivate\, mulch\, and identify street trees. They will also learn about the important role street trees play in New York City. Volunteers should dress in clothes that can get dirty and closed toe shoes. Face masks may be worn at your discretion. Space is limited and registration is required. Volunteers under 18 must be accompanied by a chaperone. This event has been funded in part by NYC Service.
