DESCRIPTION:Examine George Washington’s legacy as a military commander\, taking off from his use of the Morris-Jumel Mansion as a military Headquarters. \n\n\n\n\nGeorge Washington was born in 1732\, but his legacy has long outlived his mortal years. Among many things\, Washington was a military man\, beginning his career as a British militia officer\, fighting alongside Roger Morris in the French and Indian War. Later\, when he assumed his role as General of the Continental Army\, he took over Morris’s summer estate in Harlem Heights as his headquarters in the Fall of 1776. Starting from this pivotal point in time\, Dr. Sarah Purcell will join the Mansion for a Virtual Parlor Chat tracing the legacy of Washington as a military leader through the present day. \nAbout the Speaker: \nSarah Purcell\, L.F. Parker Professor of History\, graduated from Grinnell with a B.A. in history in 1992. She went on to earn an A.M. (1993) and a Ph.D. (1997) from Brown University. She joined the faculty of Grinnell in 2000 after teaching at Central Michigan University. Ms. Purcell’s research interests include: the Early National\, Antebellum\, and Civil War periods; popular culture and political culture; gender history; and military history. She is author of Sealed with Blood: War\, Sacrifice\, and Memory in Revolutionary America\, published by the University of Pennsylvania Press\, and Eyewitness History: The Early American Republic. She is co-author of The Encyclopedia of Battles in North America\, 1517-1915 (which won a 2000 Best of Reference award from the New York Public Library) and Critical Lives: The Life and Work of Eleanor Roosevelt. Her latest book\, Spectacle of Grief: Public Funerals and Memory in the Civil War Era\, was published in April 2022 by UNC Press.

SUMMARY:Virtual Parlor Chat: Trapped Between Armies: New York Women in the Neutral Zone
DESCRIPTION:The American Revolution was largely fought in the backyards of civilians\, especially in New York. After the British took control of New York City in the fall of 1776\, with the Americans retreating north of the Croton River\, the area in between became known as the Neutral Ground or Neutral Zone. \n\n\nFor eight long years\, this area\, which included all of Philipse Manor\, saw unprecedented levels of military battles and skirmishes\, vigilante violence\, and “foraging” for military supplies from the very civilians the armies were purporting to liberate from the enemy. Women were often caught in the middle\, as they struggled to maintain households with men joining armies\, tried to protect themselves and their children from military and vigilante violence including sexual violence\, and to protect their properties and foodstuffs from barn burnings\, cattle rustlers\, and marauding “foragers.” Some had strong political views on the conflict. Others simply tried to survive. \nThis talk will examine the lives of women in the Neutral Zone more broadly as well as specific stories of individual women including Mary Philipse Morris and Elizabeth Williams Rutgers Philipse\, Ann Fisher Miller\, Grace Isaacs Babcock\, and Black Loyalists such as Eleanor Fleming and Lydia Tompkins. \n\n\n

Crucially\, the work traces the shift from individual identification to the development of an intersectional Afro-Latina political consciousness. This consciousness isn’t just about how they see themselves—it’s about how they act\, what they believe\, and how they engage politically. Rooted in Black feminist thought\, this intersectional Afro-Latina political consciousness has real consequences for political attitudes and behavior. This works examines how identity becomes action\, and how Afro-Latina lives illuminate the power of lived experience in shaping political life. \nYalidy Matos is Associate Professor of political science at Rutgers University – New Brunswick. Her scholarship sits at the intersection of race\, ethnicity\, gender\, and politics\, immigration\, and identity politics. Her book Moral and Immoral Whiteness in Immigration Politics (OUP) was published in 2023. DESCRIPTION:Date: September 23\, 2025 Time: 6pm-7pm Cost: FREE!\n\nJoin us for our upcoming virtual lecture series featuring Dr. Lissette Acosta Corniel\, an associate professor of Latin American and Caribbean studies in the Department of Ethnic and Race Studies at the Borough of Manhattan Community College. She will be presenting “Genesis of Blackness in the Americas: Santo Domingo\, A Passport to Black Caribbean Culture and Identity\,” a conversation about the first Blacks to arrive in the Caribbean and how Santo Domingo\, or La Española\, played a key role as the main port of entry for the Transatlantic Slave Trade\, leading to one of the largest diasporic Black communities and each with a distinct sense of belonging through adaptation\, identity preservation\, and identity development. Lissette Acosta Corniel’s work focuses on gender\, slavery\, and resistance in early colonial Hispaniola and Santo Domingo. She has published several articles and book chapters and is the editor of the book Transatlantic Bondage: Slavery and Freedom in Spain\, Santo Domingo\, and Puerto Rico (SUNY Press\, 2024). She is working on her next book\, Bad Women\, Contested Freedoms: Feminist Behavior in 16th Century Hispaniola. Acosta Corniel is also interested in digital humanities. But as the slave voyages database shows\, about a fourth of the captives transported on board seventeenth and eighteenth-century Dutch slavers were in fact women. In this presentation\, I explore the experiences of women on board these slavers\, paying special attention to pregnancy\, childbirth\, and motherhood in these spaces. \n  \n“Yo Fui su Partera”: Embarazo\, parto y maternidad en barcos de esclavos del siglo XVII. \nPor la Dra. SUMMARY:Dyckman Farmhouse: “Bled\, Cupped\, Blister’d and Purged”—Healthcare in the 18th and Early 19th Centuries
DESCRIPTION:“Bled\, Cupped\, Blister’d and Purged”—Healthcare in the 18th and Early 19th Centuries \nBy Dr. Gretchen Sorin \nAugust 7th at 6:30PM \nVIRTUAL VIA ZOOM \nRegister here \nHealthcare in the time of the Dyckman Farmhouse\, the 18th and early 19th centuries\, was dramatically different from healthcare and wellness today\, although we can see vestiges of this time in some current practices. The people of the enlightenment made some moves toward cleanliness\, but\, the lack of indoor plumbing and body cleansing\, the difficulty of finding clean water\, and the lack of sewage systems contributed to a host of health problems\, as did a limited number of effective medicines. Inspired by an exhibition developed by the Cooperstown Graduate Program\, “Health and Hygiene at a 19th century Farmhouse\,” this talk will highlight medical practices in this period and the care available to both wealthy landowners and the enslaved people who shared their households. \n  \n“Sangrado\,ventosaterapia\, ampollas y purgado”: ​​la atención médica en el siglo XVIII y principios del XIX \nPor la Dra.
