DESCRIPTION:Join us for an insightful conversation with Dr. Carmen Ripollés and Hispanic Society curator Dr. Patrick Lenaghan focusing on the work of Josefa de Óbidos and Luisa Roldán\, two of the most important women working as artists in the Iberian Peninsula during the 17th century. The program celebrates the recent publication of Josefa de Óbidos by Dr. Ripolles\, part of the Getty’s series Illuminating Women Artists and the first English-language monograph about the pioneering Portuguese painter. \nCarmen Ripollés is a professor of art history at the Schnitzer School of Art\, Art History\, and Design at Portland State University (Portland\, Oregon). She completed her bachelor’s degree in art history at the University of Valencia (Spain)\, and her master’s and PhD in art history at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Her research focuses on the art of the Iberian World during the early modern period\, with emphasis on early modern artistic theory\, notions of artistic identity\, and material culture. \nPatrick Lenaghan is an internationally acclaimed scholar\, who received his B.A. from Columbia University and his Ph.D. from the Institute of Fine Arts\, N.Y.U. He has worked at The Hispanic Society since 1995 as Head of the Department of Prints and Photographs.  organizing  numerous exhibitions\, including Gilded Figures (2021) and Picasso and the Spanish Classics (2023) at the Hispanic Society and Imágenes del Quijote at the Museo Nacional del Prado. He has written widely on Spanish Renaissance and Baroque sculpture (. In 2018\, Dr. Lenaghan was named a corresponding member of the Real Academia de Sta. Isabel de Hungría in Seville.

DESCRIPTION:Bring the whole family to National Museum of the American Indian to enjoy games\, hands-on activities\, storytelling\, and music that celebrate and investigate Indigenous glass art in the Clearly Indigenous exhibition. Free\, Saturday\, May 16\, 11 AM–4 PM. Check out the full schedule of activities. \n11 AM\, 1 PM\, and 3 PM | Performances by Swil Kanim \n\n\n\nStoryteller Swil Kanim (Lummi) will perform\, sharing stories from the Pacific Northwest Coast. Throughout the day\, catch Swil Kanim playing the violin.\n\n\n12:15 PM\, 2:15 PM | Look\, Learn\, Create: Clearly Indigenous for Families\n\nJoin museum educator for a family-friendly interactive tour of the exhibition Clearly Indigenous: Native Visions Reimagined in Glass. Visitors will look closely at three to four artworks and learn about them through guided discussion and shared observation. After finding inspiration from the artworks\, families are invited to the imagiNATIONS Activity Center classroom to create their own inspired Glyph Charm artwork to take home.\n\n\nOngoing | Hands On Activities: Mock Stained Glass and more\n\nVisitors are invited to find inspiration through the featured artworks in Clearly Indigenous to create their own designs in mock stained glass\, etching and stencils\, as well as button-making and bag designs.\n\n\n\n\nOngoing | Glass Working Demonstrations by Esteban Salazar\n\nLocal Brooklyn-based glass blower Esteban Salazar will demonstrate glass working techniques such as torch work on glass rods as well as the “sugar blowing” method\, employing melted candy as a stand-in for molten glass throughout the day.\n\n\n\nClearly Indigenous: Native Visions Reimagined in Glass was originated by the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture\, Santa Fe\, New Mexico\, where it was curated by Dr. Letitia Chambers and Cathy Short (Potawatomi). The traveling exhibit was curated by Dr. Chambers and is toured by International Arts & Artists.
