SUMMARY:Fountain Bookshop Book Club Heights Whodunits: Heather
DESCRIPTION:For August we have chosen to read Heather by Caitlin Mullen. \nA small-town detective reopens an unsolved case\, sending shock waves across generations of women in this gripping new mystery from the Edgar Award–winning author of Please See Us. \n1990. In the myth-riddled woods of the New Jersey Pine Barrens\, sixteen-year-old Annabelle Riley’s twin sister\, Sabrina\, has been having an affair with a mysterious older man\, and Annabelle is determined to uncover what’s going on. Then\, inexplicably\, both sisters disappear. \nIn this same town years later\, newly instated police chief Callie Hauser makes an arrest that unexpectedly resurrects details from a heartbreaking cold case. As she digs deeper\, the past and the present collide\, challenging everything Callie believes about right and wrong\, who she is\, and the town she’s always called home. \nA propulsive mystery as incisive as it is forgiving\, Heather bears a visceral reminder that the truth of a woman’s life is often complicated and unknowable—to those on the outside\, and sometimes even to herself.

SUMMARY:Word Up Recirculation: Denise Soler Cox's WHAT WILL THEY SAY?
DESCRIPTION:Word Up welcomes award-winning filmmaker and prolific public speaker Denise Soler Cox to discuss her new book\, ” What Will They Say?: Confront Cultural Taboos and Discover Your Inner Power”\, which exposes nine common Latinx cultural taboos no one dares discuss and shares her road-tested advice to blast through them and reclaim your power. \nThe Spanish edition will be available on the same publication date: “¿Qué dirán?/What Will They Say?: Enfrenta los 10 tabúes culturales y descubre tu poder interior” \nABOUT THE BOOK\nThe Latino population in the United States is over 66 million today\, with women representing approximately half that population. By 2030\, this group is projected to be one in five US residents. Yet only one percent of the C-suite is Latina\, and for every 100 men promoted to manager\, only 74 Latinas advance. The math doesn’t add up\, unless you understand the deeply embedded cultural patterns passed down through generations that remain unspoken. \nThrough raw personal stories and unflinching honesty\, Cox reveals the cultural taboos that have been quietly sabotaging Latina success\, drawing from thousands of one-on-one conversations with Latinas after her keynotes who recognize these unspoken patterns but never had language for what was holding them back. Each chapter exposes a taboo through Cox’s own vulnerability\, creating space for readers to break through their own. \nThis isn’t just another leadership book\, it’s your guide to liberation from the generational stories that have kept the fastest-growing demographic in America from claiming their power. \nABOUT THE AUTHOR\nDenise Soler Cox is a cultural excavator: an award-winning filmmaker\, keynote speaker and author who goes inside the cultures that shape how we lead\, belong and who we become. Her debut book\, What Will They Say? (Simon & Schuster\, August 2026)\, uncovers the ten inherited cultural rules keeping Latina leaders shrinking and sidelined and shows them\, finally\, how to stop. SUMMARY:Fountain Bookshop Book Club "Is It Worth The Hype?": A Perfect Hand
DESCRIPTION:Join us at the Fountain Bookshop for bookclub: “Is It Worth the Hype?”  This August\, we will be reading A Perfect Hand by Ayelet Waldman. \nMiss Alice Lockey\, daughter of a tenant farmer\, has by dint of hard work\, innate intelligence\, and a cunning ability to predict the moods of her betters\, raised herself to the lofty status of lady’s maid at Alderwick Park. Though her mother has advised Alice to work only until marriage\, Alice has thus far resisted the temptations of matrimony among the neighboring widowers and pig farmers\, more content to enjoy the fruits of her labor—or at least the portion of it her father will share after it is paid to him. Alice spends her days arranging Lady Jemima Alderwick’s blond hair into the latest French styles\, chignons and plaits\, laundering her lady’s surprisingly malodorous petticoats and drawers\, and carefully sewing all manner of fripperies\, ribbons\, lace\, and silk flowers\, to her lady’s bonnets and gowns. \nBut when a visiting servant\, a valet named Charlie Wells\, catches her eye\, Alice begins to understand the constraints of her position. In a ploy to spend time with the object of her affection\, Alice attempts to arrange a romance between Lady Jemima Alderwick and Charlie’s employer\, one Baronet Sir Nigel Wynstowe. If only they would fall in love—then Alice and Charlie might live together as man and wife! Challenged by Lady Jemima’s love for another and Sir Wynstowe’s eccentric personality\, Alice must use all of her cunning to bring about this unlikely romantic union. Will this low-born servant successfully manipulate the hearts of these lords and ladies? Will Charlie and Alice ever improve their stations? Or\, as the beginning of women’s suffrage begins to percolate in the drawing rooms and salons of London\, will Alice discover a different sort of path for herself? \nA deliciously funny\, gorgeously detailed\, utter enthralling novel\, A Perfect Hand is a glorious novel of class\, gender\, and England on the cusp of enormous change.

SUMMARY:Inwood Canoe Club: Little Red Lite Swim
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the inaugural 2026 Little Red Lite Swim \nInspired by the spirit of the classic Little Red Lighthouse 10K marathon swim\, a beloved event once hosted by NYC Swim\, the inaugural Little Red Lite Swim offers a new opportunity to experience Manhattan’s iconic open-water scene. \nThis shorter\, current-assisted swim follows a beautiful 6.4 km / 4 mi route along one of the most scenic stretches of the Hudson River. The swim begins at Inwood Canoe Club\, just south of Dyckman Street and finishes at the Baylander\, a former U.S. Navy vessel now docked at the West Harlem Piers near 125th Street and converted into a relaxed floating bar and restaurant. \nAlong the way\, swimmers will cruise downriver along the Manhattan shoreline\, passing under the George Washington Bridge and by the Little Red Lighthouse\, Riverbank State Park\, and the Hudson River Greenway before finishing at the Baylander. \nThe Little Red Lite Swim is a non-competitive\, non-timed event designed for swimmers who may not be ready for a marathon-distance swim but still want the thrill of swimming in the beautiful Hudson River. \n9:00 AM check-in\, 10:30 AM splash

SUMMARY:Feminist Film Series! ☀️🎬: STATELESS
DESCRIPTION:Join Undocumented Women’s Fund and Roxa Luxemburg Stiftung on Saturday\, August 22nd for the last installment of our Summer! ☀️🎬 \nWe are ending on a high note with Stateless\, a power documentary by Michele Stephenson\, that follows families of those affected by the 2013 legislation stripping citizenship from Dominicans of Haitian descent\, uncovering the complex history and present-day politics of Haiti and the Dominican Republic through the grassroots electoral campaign of a young attorney named Rosa Iris. \n📆 Saturday\, August 22nd \n📍 Haven Plaza (711 W 168th St\, New York\, NY 10032) \n🚪 Doors open: 7:30 PM \n🎥 Screening: 8:30 PM \nAfter the screening\, stay for a discussion on how the film sheds light on what is at stake in the fight over birthright citizenship\, statelessness as an immigration regime\, and translocal politics. We will have a surprise guest join us for the discussion. \nRSVP and Donate at: https://givebutter.com/2026-summer-feminist-film-series-3 \nSuggested donation $10 (nobody turned away for lack of funds). See you then!
