SUMMARY:Dominican Writers Association & Word Up: Rita Indiana in Washington Heights - Celebrating ASMODEUS
DESCRIPTION:A special evening with acclaimed Dominican writer\, musician\, and artist Rita Indiana in celebration of her new novel\, Admodeus\, a hallucinatory thriller about a failing demon’s search for a new host in post-dictatorship Santo Domingo. \nOn this evening\, Rita joins us for her first literary event in the neighborhood she calls home. She will be in conversation with Alex V. Cruz to discuss her return to fiction\, and the intersections of literature\, music\, memory\, Santo Domingo\, identity\, and place that have shaped her singular body of work. \nThe evening will include an intimate conversation\, reading\, audience Q&A\, and book signing\, bringing our community together to celebrate one of the Dominican Republic’s most distinctive contemporary literary voices. \nCopies of Asmodeus will be available for purchase through Word Up Community Bookshop\, including English and Spanish editions. \nA maximum of 80 attendees. Please register in advance. The event space is located on the second floor\, which is accessible by elevator from the first floor elevators. \nAsmodeus\, a millennia-old demon\, has inhabited Rudy\, a once-legendary Dominican rock star\, for decades. But in 1992\, the demon’s powers begin to fade. What follows is a desperate weeklong odyssey as Asmodeus ricochets through the bodies of the inhabitants of Santo Domingo’s underworld: from Guinea\, a young metalhead plotting a warehouse heist\, to Mireya\, the daughter of a former torturer\, to other souls caught in his chaotic orbit. Each possession reveals another layer of a city still reeling from the Balaguer dictatorship. And each new host engenders a surprising tenderness in the demon. \nFrom acclaimed musical artist and author Rita Indiana\, Asmodeus is written in urgent prose punctuated by original décimas\, ten-line rhyming poems drawing from Latin American musical and oral tradition. Indiana weaves together Dominican heavy metal\, black magic\, and political trauma. Asmodeus is a supernatural noir\, riotous thriller\, and searing portrait of a nation grappling with its complicated past. \nRita Indiana is a writer\, composer\, and Global Distinguished Professor at New York University. She has written six novels including Tentacle\, winner of the Grand Prize of the Association of Caribbean Writers. She lives in New York City.

Join us as we welcome the Year of the Horse together! \nOne of INTERWOVEN’S signature programs\, FantAsia\, celebrates the sound of the East and West\, past and present. The concert opens with performances of historic Eastern Asian melodies\, featuring instruments such as the koto (Japanese zither) played by Yoko Reikano Kimura\, piri & saenghwang (Korean wind instruments) performed by Gamin\, and the erhu (Chinese two-stringed instrument) played by Andy Lin. As the audience becomes acquainted with the traditional sounds of Asia\, the program shifts to new compositions that intertwine the sonorities of the East and West\, written by American composers such as Hung-Ping Chang and Jay Reise. \nThroughout the performance\, some of our musicians will offer brief explanations\, introducing the instruments and sharing the cultural and philosophical inspirations behind the pieces—connecting the audience to the myths\, aesthetic objects\, and traditions of Asia. Our performances are designed to be accessible to anyone interested in exploring unfamiliar sounds and ideas. While there is an educational component to our program\, no prior knowledge of Asian culture is required—just an open mind and curiosity. \nBring your family and meet your friends to enjoy an afternoon community concert of classical music. All are welcome!\nReception with Year of the Horse light snacks and beverages following the performance.  All proceeds benefit Good Shepherd Church

SUMMARY:NoMAA Labs: PHOTOGRAPHY beginner's guide
DESCRIPTION:From Auto to Manual: A Guide to Mirrorless Photography with TONY LOPEZ \nThis class is designed for beginners who own a mirrorless camera—or smartphone photographers who are ready to take the next step and discover the creative possibilities of a dedicated camera. \nThis classroom-based introduction takes the mystery out of modern mirrorless cameras and teaches you what happens beyond Auto mode. You’ll learn how cameras and lenses work and explore the fundamentals that give photographers creative control\, including the exposure triangle (aperture\, shutter speed\, and ISO)\, metering\, exposure compensation\, shooting modes\, autofocus\, white balance\, histograms\, and RAW vs. JPEG. We’ll also cover essential lens concepts\, including focal length\, prime vs. zoom lenses\, maximum aperture\, and full-frame vs. crop-sensor lenses. \nNo prior photography experience is required\, and you don’t need to already own a mirrorless camera. If you’ve been taking photos with your phone and are considering stepping up to a mirrorless camera—or you already own one and want to finally understand what all those settings do—this course is for you. \nParticipants are welcome to bring their mirrorless cameras; however\, because menu systems and controls vary widely among camera brands and models\, the course will focus on universal photography concepts rather than step-by-step instructions for making adjustments on individual cameras.
