SUMMARY:Our Savior's Atonement: WHCO main concert "The Places That Inspire Us"
DESCRIPTION:In The Places That Inspire Us\, we explore music inspired by real-world settings and the emotional landscapes they evoke. The program begins with Anna Clyne’s Restless Oceans\, a thrilling contemporary work for chamber orchestra that channels the turbulence and strength of the sea. This work draws inspiration and its title from A Woman Speaks – a poem by Audre Lorde.  Next on the program\, WHCO is joined by Ariadne Greif for Samuel Barber’s Knoxville: Summer of 1915\, a nostalgic meditation on childhood and place\, set to the words of James Agee. Concluding our program is Felix Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 3 “Scottish”\, a sweeping tribute to the rugged romance of the Scottish Highlands. \nThis concert will be approximately 1hr\, no intermission. Reception to follow.

SUMMARY:Word Up: Book Signing with Jonnie Park: SPIT
DESCRIPTION:Word Up welcomes Jonnie Park–better known by his rap moniker\, Dumbfoundead– for a signing for his raw and electrifying memoir\, SPIT. Jonnie Park rose from an unruly childhood in Los Angeles’s iconic Koreatown to international rap stardom is as unlikely as it is exhilarating\, and tells it all in his memoir. \nAttendees must preorder the featured book ahead of the signing at WordUpBooks.com. The signing ends at 1:30pm. \nBorn in Argentina to Korean parents and smuggled by a coyote across the US-Mexico border at age three\, Park grew up in L.A. amid cultural dislocation\, his father’s violent alcoholism\, and the turbulent protests and riots of the early 1990s. \nSearching for belonging\, he found salvation in the highly competitive underground world of battle rap\, where he was among the only successful Asian American battle rappers. He honed his freestyle superpowers at Project Blowed\, the legendary South Central L.A. open-mic venue\, amid a motley crew of characters who took him in as one of their own. \nTold through the lens of his life’s greatest battles–his father’s rage\, racist stereotypes\, the “model minority” myth\, the pressures of fame\, and his own addictions–Park tells his story with his trademark humor\, lyrical style\, and unflinching honesty. \nLike Eminem’s 8 Mile\, SPIT charts the author’s course from high-school dropout to cultural pioneer\, one verse at a time. Featuring a dozen vivid graphic novel-style illustrations that bring his journey to life\, SPIT visualizes the inner demons and outer adversaries Park faced along the way. From open-mics in South Central to freestyle cyphers in Seoul to music festivals across the globe\, Park’s memoir is a testament to creativity\, grit\, and the power of speaking your truth–even when the world isn’t ready to hear it. \nMore than just a chronicle of an artist’s path to success\, SPIT is a groundbreaking story of identity\, resilience\, and reinvention. It is also the story of an American outsider who turned life’s challenges into his stage and battled his way to triumph. \n

SUMMARY:MJM Virtual Parlor Chat: Food\, Hunger\, Scarcity and General Washington’s Continental Army
DESCRIPTION:What did the soldiers of the Continental Army eat to fuel their fight for independence? What about the officers or General George Washington? Food insecurity was a monumental challenge faced by all those involved in the American Revolution. John Ota\, a bestselling and award winning author of books such as “The Kitchen” (2021 Taste Canada Awards finalist and a 2021 Paris Gourmand Cookbook finalist) and the newly released book “The Dining Room” joins the Mansion to discuss what these rations would have looked like for throughout the ranks. Ota’s deep research into the foodways of the Revolution will offer a detailed and thoughful lecture on the true circumstances of the Military encampment and headquarters menus – including what would have been eaten by soldiers and Generals alike when stationed at the MORRIS-JUMEL MANSION. \nFrom soldier’s rations to George Washington’s war time birthday celebrations\, learn about the culinary history of the American Revolution. \nThis is a virtual event;link will be emailed upon registration.

SUMMARY:Lost Inwood: - Uptown’s Springs\, Wells\, and Water - (April)
DESCRIPTION:LOST INWOOD \n– Uptown’s Springs\, Wells\, and Water – \n-TUESDAY APRIL 7th at 7:30PM- \nWater. We all need it. But running household tap water wasn’t available to Inwood residents until the latter part of the 1800s. Before it became possible to simply turn on a faucet\, how did people get fresh water to drink and use? And when did municipal water arrive in Inwood? \nThis month at LOST INWOOD we’ll discover the fascinating network of springs\, wells\, creeks and canals which dotted northern Manhattan and Inwood. We’ll use our virtual dowsing rods to trace their story. Where were Inwood’s springs and wells of yesteryear? Are any of them still around? You might be surprised. \nPlease join us Tuesday Apr 7th at 7:30pm. It’s free to the public\, but reservations are recommended. Hope to see you there! \nDon Rice \n  \nTHE INWOOD FARM \n600 West 218th Street (corner Indian Road) \ntel 212-884-2111 \nReservations can be made by email: monicajjones@icloud.com

SUMMARY:United Palace: The Muse -- Exploring the Iconography of the United Palace
DESCRIPTION:On Tuesday\, April 7th\, just two days after Easter and marking the 57th anniversary of our rescue and rebirth by Rev. Ike’s church\, we invite you to explore the iconography hidden within the walls of the United Palace. After a brief overview of our remarkable history\, you’ll encounter the intricate characters and ornamental details woven throughout the space. We’ll reveal our interpretations of their meanings and make connections to the diverse cultures and wisdom traditions that continue to inspire our ministry of the Muse. \nThe Muse is a monthly program dedicated to celebrating inspiration\, the arts\, and community. It brings together open-minded artists and art lovers to explore the many ways inspiration\, or The Muse\, elevates our daily lives. Through shared human experiences\, creative expression\, and a deep love for the arts\, we reflect on life’s biggest questions\, uncovering new meaning in the world around us. \nDoors open at 6:30pm. The Muse begins at 7:00pm.
