SUMMARY:Word Up Recirculation: Seth Michelson's HOPE ON THE BORDER with David C. Baluarte
DESCRIPTION:Word Up welcomes award-winning professor Seth Michelson to discuss his new book Hope on the Border: Immigration\, Incarceration\, and the Power of Poetry\, a humanizing story of immigration shown through the lens of undocumented\, unaccompanied children and the poems they write. In conversation with Michelson will be David C. Baluarte\, an immigration attorney and CUNY law professor. \n\n“Heartfelt . . . a surprisingly uplifting call to reform an unjust system.” -Publishers Weekly \n\nThis event is a $5 suggested donation ticket with 30 max attendees. Please register in advance. \nIn compliance with Word Up Community Safety guidelines\, all attendees for this event are encouraged to stay masked. \nRecirculation\, a project of Word Up Community Bookshop\, is located at 876 Riverside Drive (near 160th St.) in Washington Heights\, NYC. You can take the 1 train to 157th St.\, A/C train to 163rd St.\, and the M4 and M5 to Broadway and 159/160th. \nABOUT THE BOOK\nIn heart-wrenching prose\, Seth Michelson faces the U.S. immigration crisis head on-by learning and sharing the stories of migrating people fleeing violence and poverty\, and by leading workshops for minors held inside a maximum-security detention center. Highlighting the experiences of people desperate for safety\, Michelson tirelessly fights for justice and their freedom. Guided through the powerful medium of poetry\, the children share their pasts\, struggles\, hopes\, and dreams. Among them\, Carlitos\, a 13-year-old boy who escaped a gang to try to make a safe and honest life on his own after his mother’s death\, and Karla\, a teenager whose family begged her to flee for safety after she was shot. Remarkably\, they and other children from similar circumstances express themselves with honesty\, passion\, and optimism for a better future. \nMichelson also introduces us to migrating people at the border\, including a woman who was chased from her home amid violence\, and a dedicated father who was arrested and beaten while searching for work to make a more secure life for his wife and daughter. \nWhether relating experiences in a Mexican refugee camp or a U.S. immigration detention center\, Michelson’s prose is brisk and gripping\, offering hard-earned insights into ways we might create a better immigration system that treats all people with dignity. \nABOUT THE AUTHOR\nSeth Michelson is an award-winning professor who has gained recognition from the National Endowment of the Arts and the Fulbright Foundation. He is the author of academic articles\, book introductions\, film and book reviews\, and fourteen books of poetry and poetry in translation. His work has been published in English and Spanish in Argentina\, Mexico\, England\, and Italy\, among other countries. He currently teaches at Washington and Lee University in Virginia where he is the chair of Latin American and Caribbean Studies. He lives in Charlottesville\, Virginia. \nABOUT THE MODERATOR\nDavid C. Baluarte (he/él) joined CUNY School of Law as the Senior Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and a Professor of Law in January 2024. Baluarte is an advocate\, teacher\, and scholar in the areas of immigration\, refugee and statelessness protection\, and international human rights. He has written numerous journal articles\, academic studies\, human rights reports\, and participated in various grant-funded projects and high-profile impact litigation initiatives in these areas.

SUMMARY:Word Up Community Bookshop: EL VIAJE DE UNA BANDERA: Iris Morales with Angel Antonio Ruiz-Laboy
DESCRIPTION:Word Up welcomes activist and author Iris Morales and translator Angel Antonio Ruiz-Laboy to share their book A Flag’s Journey\, now available in Spanish! Based on true events\, A Flag’s Journey is a powerful story about identity and standing up to injustice—told through the eyes of a young Puerto Rican boy in 1990s New York City. \nThis event is a $5 suggested donation ticket with 30 max attendees. Please register in advance. \nWord Up Community Bookshop is located at 2113 Amsterdam Ave. (& 165th St.) in Washington Heights\, NYC. You can take the 1 train to 168th St and the A/C train to 163rd or 168th  St. \nABOUT THE BOOK\nBased on true events\, A Flag’s Journey is a powerful story about identity and standing up to injustice—told through the eyes of a young Puerto Rican boy in 1990s New York City. \nTen-year-old Andrés Rivera loves baseball and spending time with his best friend. After a championship win with his Little League team\, he goes with his family and best friend to the Puerto Rican Day Parade. What begins as a joyful day of cultural pride and celebration takes a sudden turn when Andrés becomes the target of a racist incident involving the Puerto Rican flag—an act that makes newspaper headlines. \nAs he questions what happened\, Andrés has eye-opening conversations with family\, teachers\, and classmates about Puerto Rican history\, the impact of racism\, and the role of media in shaping public opinion. Through these experiences\, he gains a deeper appreciation for community\, the strength of friendship\, and—most of all—the power of young people to create change. \nA Flag’s Journey is a meaningful and uplifting chapter book featuring relatable characters and vibrant illustrations. Interwoven journaling prompts that invite readers to pause\, reflect\, and reconnect with their own creative voice. Intimate yet expansive\, this anthology serves as both a literary offering and a companion\, reminding readers that rest can be generative\, stillness can be transformative\, and meaning can take root when we slow down enough to listen.

SUMMARY:Buunni Inwood: Lamine World Music
DESCRIPTION:Lamine Thiam: founder/composer/singer/djembe drum/bandleader\nAlejandro (Al) Castro: 5-string bass\nSidney (Sid) Whelan: guitar \nOur repertoire comprises new compositions based on traditional West African music\, blues\, funk and jazz. In this ensemble we’re centered around the djembe as the lead instrument. In addition\, Lamine has his own approach to tuning the djembe that allows for a greater range of overtones. Together with voice\, bass and guitar\, this creates a vibe that’s both unique and hypnotic. \nLamine Thiam is a percussionist\, singer\, dancer\, choreographer\, actor and educator based in New York City. Originally from Senegal\, he has worked and performed internationally and is currently on the dance faculty at SUNY Purchase. While his mastery of the art form is unquestionable\, Lamine views himself as a lifelong student and holds humility as being essential to the development of artistic excellence. \nAl Castro is an electric bassist and guitarist who is interested in the music of the African diaspora. He has performed in a variety of rock and Latin music ensembles. \nSid Whelan is an experienced and versatile guitarist who gears his playing towards the songs and the ensemble of the moment. In this context that typically means percussive West African funk guitar ostinatos alternating with Lamine’s melodic phrases; punchy ensemble breaks and improvised blues solos.

SUMMARY:Word Up Community Bookshop: New Date June 3rd - Leah Kim's MOM\, UNFILTERED with Frederick Joseph
DESCRIPTION:Word Up welcomes mental health advocate and storyteller Leah 수진 Kim to discuss her new book\, Mom\, Unfiltered: Maternal Mental Health and Finding Freedom Through Motherhood\, a deeply personal examination of the dire state of our maternal and postpartum care for mothers. \nIn conversation with Kim will be Frederick Joseph\, author of This Thing of Ours and Patriarchy Blues: Reflections on Manhood. \nThis event is a $5 suggested donation ticket with 30 max attendees. Please register in advance. \nABOUT THE BOOK\nFor expecting and new parents\, too often the care is so focused on a healthy baby that the mother’s physical and mental needs are overlooked. Mothers face intense pressure to have the perfect birth plan\, breastfeed with ease\, and immediately bond with their baby. Unfortunately\, these expectations can lead to anxiety\, depression\, and overwhelm. But it doesn’t have to be that way. \nMom\, Unfiltered is profoundly personal and brutally honest\, yet it is ultimately deeply hopeful. It is about survival and growth\, an invitation to move beyond our current social\, cultural\, and familial realities to support mothers in a meaningful way-physically\, mentally\, and spiritually.
