SUMMARY:Inwood Art Works: Select Works by Yiorgos
DESCRIPTION:Opening celebration: Select Works by Yiorgos \nYiorgos is pleased to present his work at Inwood Art Works this Fall (2026). He has successfully exhibited at ChocNYC (February 2025) and Kuro Kirin (Fall 2024). His pieces are to be found in several private collections. Yiorgos (George Tsugranes) retired in 2018 from his professions as a floral designer and a middle school math teacher for the Annenberg-funded arts program of JHS 22 and at the Special Music School near Lincoln Center. He has been creating visual art ever since. Yiorgos’s art is always life-affirming\, playful\, and appealing. He has shaped a unique style that is instantly recognizable\, bringing an appreciation of organic forms and the omnipresence of geometry to his work. When not creating stirring images\, he enjoys playing classical and jazz music at the piano\, traveling abroad\, and taking long walks with his wife and Labrador retriever. \nYiorgos has carefully selected works from several periods of his creative life\, including Geometric Landscapes in a riot of color and pure Abstractions in black and white. From Greek villages to industrial skylines\, from sere mountains to turgid seas\, these selections demonstrate his curiosity and wide-ranging vision. \nOn Exhibition November 3-14\, 2026

SUMMARY:Word Up: Asale Angel-Ajani's FUGITIVE ARCHIVE
DESCRIPTION:Word Up welcomes writer and anthropologist Asale Angel-Ajani to discuss her memoir Fugitive Archives: My Family and the American Myth of Belonging\, an incisive\, lyrical exploration of one family’s history that radically overturns American myths about race\, violence\, and belonging. \nABOUT THE BOOK\nAngel-Ajani and her twin\, the only Black children in a working-class white family\, were shuffled between relatives\, coming of age in a country that offered little refuge. Raised in the gaps left behind\, they learned how race and betrayal shaped their family legacy and the identities they inherited. When her grandmother\, the family’s record keeper\, died\, Angel-Ajani took up the archive\, looking for answers—about her mother’s abandonment\, her father’s legal struggles\, and her grandmother’s passage from overt racism to an improbable love with her Black step-grandfather. Most urgently\, she sought to understand the origins of her inescapable anger. \nTracing ancestors enslaved\, Indigenous\, free\, and white\, Angel-Ajani uncovered how people survived violent systems that rewarded compliance and punished mercy—and how some carved pockets of resistance\, whose acts of resistance rippled across generations. Through stories of stolen land\, the enslavement and murder of her earliest ancestor\, her great-grandmother’s role in the WKKK\, and the incarceration of a step-grandmother and uncle in a Japanese internment camp\, she weaves her linage into the national narrative\, exposing connections deliberately erased from official accounts. She reveals a country not of strangers split into “us” and “them\,” but of lives deeply entangled. \nIn a moment defined by moral exhaustion\, rising violence\, and historical erasure\, Fugitive Archives lays bare a nation’s unresolved past through one family’s story of grief\, betrayal\, courage\, and love. It is both a testament and an invitation—a vital exploration of race and class\, a map for survival and resistance\, and a necessary reckoning with the truths we inherit to reshape a more just future. \nABOUT THE AUTHOR\nAsale Angel-Ajani is a writer and anthropologist whose work examines race\, migration\, incarceration\, gender\, and belonging. She is an associate professor and director of Women’s and Gender Studies at The City College of New York\, with affiliations in anthropology\, international studies\, and Black studies. She is the author of the novel A Country You Can Leave and the nonfiction book Strange Trade\, and has taught at the University of Texas at Austin\, New York University’s Gallatin School\, and Hong Kong Baptist University. Her fellowships and grants include support from the Ford\, Mellon\, and Rockefeller foundations and a Hutchins Family Fellowship at Harvard University’s Hutchins Center for African and African American Research. She holds a PhD in anthropology from Stanford University and an MFA in creative writing from the University of Hong Kong.

SUMMARY:Inwood Art Works: FantAsia! Concert
DESCRIPTION:FantAsia! Featuring INTERWOVEN \nProgram\nSheng-Ching Hsu (arranger) – Battle Horses Galloping for Erhu and String Trio\nGamin & Tokunaga Keiko – Sajanoleum: Lion’s Blessings for Taepyeongso\, Piri and Strings*\nJay Reise – Orpheus in Meikai for Koto and String Quartet*\nMadoka Mori (arranger) – Jasmine Flower for Erhu and String Trio\nHung-Ping Apple Chang – In Harmony with Moon and Current for Erhu and String Trio*\n* world premiere \nFantAsia! is a vibrant celebration of Asian music\, traditions\, and cuisine. Highlighting the program are three world-premiere compositions that interlace Asian and Western musical worlds\, inspired by ancient legends\, traditional dances\, and shared philosophies. Join us as we welcome the Year of the Horse together! \nOne of INTERWOVEN’S signature programs\, FantAsia\, celebrates the sound of the East and West\, past and present. The concert opens with performances of historic Eastern Asian melodies\, featuring instruments such as the koto (Japanese zither) played by Yoko Reikano Kimura\, piri & saenghwang (Korean wind instruments) performed by Gamin\, and the erhu (Chinese two-stringed instrument) played by Andy Lin. As the audience becomes acquainted with the traditional sounds of Asia\, the program shifts to new compositions that intertwine the sonorities of the East and West\, written by American composers such as Hung-Ping Chang and Jay Reise. \nThroughout the performance\, some of our musicians will offer brief explanations\, introducing the instruments and sharing the cultural and philosophical inspirations behind the pieces—connecting the audience to the myths\, aesthetic objects\, and traditions of Asia. Our performances are designed to be accessible to anyone interested in exploring unfamiliar sounds and ideas. While there is an educational component to our program\, no prior knowledge of Asian culture is required—just an open mind and curiosity. \nBring your family and meet your friends to enjoy an afternoon community concert of classical music. All are welcome!\nReception with Year of the Horse light snacks and beverages following the performance.  All proceeds benefit Good Shepherd Church

SUMMARY:Word Up Recirculation: Coltrane (100th) Celebration with the Joseph Herbst Big Band
DESCRIPTION:Coltrane Celebration celebrates the life and music of John Coltrane\, with this year marking his centennial. The show’s first performance was in 2019 in North Carolina\, Coltrane’s home state\, while this show is the New York premiere. The show features both arrangements of Coltrane’s music and original music inspired by Coltrane’s life written for 17-piece jazz band by Joseph Herbst. \nSpoken word is interwoven throughout the show\, bringing to life Coltrane in his own words as the script is all pulled from interviews and writings by Coltrane\, allowing those less familiar with Coltrane’s work to be fully immersed as well. While drawing some inspiration from his music directly\, the show explores the beliefs\, philosophy\, and morality of Coltrane as seen in his interviews\, resulting in a new experience of Coltrane as a person as well as a musician. \nFeatured arrangements include “Giant Steps\,” “Lonnie’s Lament\,” and “After the Rain\,” along with compositions inspired by “Equinox\,” “Like Sonny\,” and “Pursuance.” Join us as we celebrate both a North Carolina and New York icon! \nABOUT THE ARTIST\nHailing from the Carolinas\, composer and woodwindist Joseph Herbst uses music as a medium for storytelling. In 2021\, he released his debut album\, This is Our Environment\, bringing together original music\, spoken word\, and environmental justice. Works in progress include his first big band album\, Into the Void of My Dreams\, exploring personal change through an original story of a person entering their Dreamworld\, and his theatrical show\, Ghosts in the Mirror\, exploring internalized messages and how we handle them. When not leading his own projects\, Joseph works avidly as a copyist with a goal of assisting composers\, working with notable figures such as Etienne Charles\, Mike Garson\, Alan Ferber\, Jon Cowherd\, Darcy James Argue\, and Elio Villafranca. Joseph received the ASCAP Young Jazz Composers Award (2021\, 2023\, 2024)\, the ASCAP Johnny Mandel Prize (2023)\, and the 24th Charlie Parker Jazz Composition Prize and Manny Album Commission (2023)

SUMMARY:Recirculation Word Up: John Washington's HOW TO CLOSE A CAMP
DESCRIPTION:John Washington’s HOW TO CLOSE A CAMP: DISPATCHES FROM THE FIGHT AGAINST IMMIGRANT DETENTION \nWord Up welcomes reporter and award-winning translator John Washington to discuss his new book\,”How to Close a Camp: Dispatches from the Fight Against Immigrant Detention”\, an urgent polemic and practical guide to dismantling the immigrant detention system. \n“An urgent\, courageous book…. Please read it\, both to witness the vital stories that Washington captures with grace and rigor\, and to study the moral blueprint it presents to us all.” -Sarah Stillman \nABOUT THE BOOK\nMasked federal agents are kidnapping and killing our neighbors\, on the streets and behind the bars of hundreds of detention centers across the country. In How to Close a Camp\, award-winning journalist and translator John Washington offers a galvanizing\, clear-eyed case for why we must close these camps and how to do it. \nIn spite of the decades-long growth of immigrant detention\, communities have been fighting back against camps–and winning. Washington distills strategies and lessons from successful campaigns to close camps and block or slow the opening of new ones\, drawing on conversations with veteran organizers from the movement.  Chipping away at the infrastructure of the camp is the only way to stave off increasing xenophobic and authoritarian violence. It is time to close all the camps and build a world that no longer requires them. \nABOUT THE AUTHOR\nJohn Washington is a journalist covering the border\, climate change\, democracy\, and more. He has written for The Atlantic\, The Washington Post\, The Nation\, The Intercept\, and other outlets. He is the author of The Case for Open Borders and The Dispossessed: A Story of Asylum at the US-Mexico Border and Beyond. Washington is also a translator of books by Anabel Hernandez\, Sandra Rodriquez Nieto\, and others. SUMMARY:Word Up: BODEGA CATS OF NEW YORK with Dan Rimada
DESCRIPTION:Get to know the working cats of New York City and the owners of these neighborhood stores! Word Up welcomes Dan Rimada\, the founder of the beloved archive Bodega Cats of New York (now a book with the same name)\, which led to bodega cat legislation in New York City and New York State! \nTo celebrate the cats in our neighborhood\, we’ll be hosting a cat supply drive in November! Feel free to drop off supplies before the event at Word Up Community Bookshop or the fridge outside the shop starting November 3rd. \n“New York City is the world’s melting pot\, and the place where it all happens is the bodega. It is a safe space built into your neighborhood’s corner to provide warmth\, a hot meal\, and the most perfect part of New York City culture: THE bodega cat. Dan Rimada has captured the soul of these spaces perfectly. As someone who has been at the forefront of documenting the cats that manage these shops citywide\, I can tell you firsthand: we would be nothing without them and the papis\, habibis\, and ocks who pour so much love into their bodegas. They are the heart of New York City.” —Michelladonna\, Actor and Host of Mad Realities’ Shop Cats \nPlease register in advance. \nABOUT THE BOOK\nBodega Cats of New York is the first book to document these working cats—and social media superstars—with the access and intimacy they deserve. The cats represent the last generation of true working animals in NYC. Through four years of building relationships across all five boroughs\, author Dan Rimada and photographer Gulce Kilkis have gained unprecedented access to capture both the cats and the immigrant families who’ve built their lives around these neighborhood stores\, which serve as anchors for their communities. Featuring beautiful photographs and brief\, touching narratives of 60 cats from all five boroughs\, this book provides a behind-the-scenes look at this New York City phenomenon\, including: – The informal community networks that keep these cats healthy and loved – Heartfelt customer interactions with their favorite felines – Individual cat personalities and their daily territories – Owners’ stories about how cats became family members – And much more! \nBodega Cats of New York isn’t another cat book; it’s a documentation of one of the last authentic pieces of old New York—the family-owned corner stores where cats still do what they’ve done for centuries: work for a living\, charm the customers\, and make every day a little better for everyone they meet. Whether you’re a cat fan\, a store regular\, or take an interest in photography\, this photo book will tug on your heartstrings and delight you. \nABOUT THE AUTHOR\nDan Rimada is the founder of Bodega Cats of New York\, an archive documenting New York City’s working bodega cats through their names\, routines\, stores\, owners\, workers\, and stories. He began the project in 2022 after noticing Luna\, his local bodega cat\, and realizing how little of this everyday New York institution had been formally recorded. Since then\, Bodega Cats of New York has documented cats across all five boroughs\, built a public archive\, and launched the campaign to protect New York’s bodega cats. The campaign’s viral petition helped lead to bodega cat legislation in New York City and New York State.

SUMMARY:NoMAA Labs: PHOTOGRAPHY beginner's guide
DESCRIPTION:From Auto to Manual: A Guide to Mirrorless Photography with TONY LOPEZ \nThis class is designed for beginners who own a mirrorless camera—or smartphone photographers who are ready to take the next step and discover the creative possibilities of a dedicated camera. \nThis classroom-based introduction takes the mystery out of modern mirrorless cameras and teaches you what happens beyond Auto mode. You’ll learn how cameras and lenses work and explore the fundamentals that give photographers creative control\, including the exposure triangle (aperture\, shutter speed\, and ISO)\, metering\, exposure compensation\, shooting modes\, autofocus\, white balance\, histograms\, and RAW vs. JPEG. We’ll also cover essential lens concepts\, including focal length\, prime vs. zoom lenses\, maximum aperture\, and full-frame vs. crop-sensor lenses. \nNo prior photography experience is required\, and you don’t need to already own a mirrorless camera. If you’ve been taking photos with your phone and are considering stepping up to a mirrorless camera—or you already own one and want to finally understand what all those settings do—this course is for you. \nParticipants are welcome to bring their mirrorless cameras; however\, because menu systems and controls vary widely among camera brands and models\, the course will focus on universal photography concepts rather than step-by-step instructions for making adjustments on individual cameras.

SUMMARY:Inwood Art Works: STILL ALIVE Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:STILL ALIVE: Seeing friends in Gaza.  Portraits\, as they see themselves. \nMalak. Hind. Adel. Nabil. Heba. Mona. Mohammed. Sobhi. These are some of the people at the heart of Still Alive—friends in Gaza whose lives have become closely connected with people in Inwood. \nThe exhibition brings their photographs into the gallery at a scale we rarely give to the images people share in everyday life. Made by them or with their participation\, the portraits show people as they have chosen to be seen: with family and friends\, in moments of humor\, tenderness\, pride\, and ordinary life. They also hold the knowledge of what it takes to make and share such images in Gaza now. \nOver the past several years\, friendships have grown through messages\, photographs\, fundraising\, and direct support. Still Alive grows from those relationships. It invites visitors to spend time with the people in the photographs\, to learn their names\, and to see more of their lives than any account of a crisis can hold. \nPresented by Goods for Gaza at Inwood Art Works Studio \nStill Alive runs November 15 through December 5\, 2026.
