SUMMARY:Hispanic Society: Artist Talk with Tom Sanford
DESCRIPTION:Join the Hispanic Society for a conversation with NoMAA Exec Director\, Niria Leyva-Gutiérrez and artistTom Sanford about Uptown Visions. \nUptown Visions is the 2026 selection for Art on Audubon Terrace presented by the Hispanic Society Museum & Library and the Northern Manhattan Arts Alliance (NoMAA) \nIn Uptown Visions\, Tom Sanford draws on his experience as a longtime Upper Manhattan resident to offer a vibrant expression of the joy\, rhythm\, and layered experience of Uptown summer life. The work also pays tribute to Joaquín Sorolla’s monumental mural series Vision of Spain\, which documents the people and customs of the Iberian Peninsula\, and which has long inspired Sanford’s work. Coinciding with the 100th anniversary of the installation of the Vision of Spain\, this project honors Sorolla’s legacy through a contemporary reflection that celebrates the Hispanic Society’s Uptown community. \nTom Sanford is a Harlem-based painter whose work captures the energy\, humor\, and contradictions of contemporary life. Drawing on the visual language of pop culture\, politics\, and art history\, Sanford’s “Pop-Surreal-Expressionist” style combines bold color\, expressive brushwork\, and incisive storytelling to portray the beauty and absurdities of modern America. His elaborate tableaux of New York City feature cultural icons and everyday people alike\, inviting reflection on celebrity\, media\, and justice. By transforming the fleeting spectacle of current events into complex human narratives\, Sanford captures the evolving spirit of the urban landscape and its broader national context.

SUMMARY:Word Up Recirculation: Gallery Opening for Alfredo Jimagua's SEEDS OF REVOLUTION
DESCRIPTION:Kick off your Friday night at this opening gallery reception celebrating Alfredo Jimagua’s Seeds of Revolution\, celebrating all of New York in Washington Heights. \nThis photo series titled Seeds of Revolution started the day after Zohran Mamdani won the election for mayor last November. That’s when Alfredo Jimagua posted flyers in working-class corners of the city\, casting locals for a photoshoot in their homes\, asking: Who are the real people living here\, and how do they make NYC home? The result is a mosaic of 27 New Yorkers across Upper Manhattan\, The Bronx\, Queens\, and Brooklyn\, serving as a pulse check on a collective moment that’s been building on the ground for years. These portraits capture artists\, immigrants\, families\, and lovers as the seeds of revolution sprouting here in that quiet New York winter. \nAlfredo Jimagua is a queer Afro-Caribbean writer\, photographer\, and community organizer based in NYC. He is also releasing a graphic novel based in New York later this year published by an artist-owned cooperative label he founded called Honey Mummy. \nMore of his work can be found at alfredoshots.com and honeymummy.co \nGallery up from September 25 to October 25\, 2026. \n
