SUMMARY:Hispanic Society: Panel Discussion on Sandy Rodriguez "Tierra Insurgente"
DESCRIPTION:Join The Hispanic Society for a panel discussion with Sandy Rodriguez and invited guest speakers about her latest exhibition\, “Tierra Insurgente”. \nTierra Insurgente is the first New York City solo exhibition by Los Angeles–based Chicana artist Sandy Rodriguez. The exhibition brings Rodriguez’s contemporary practice into dialogue with rarely exhibited maps\, manuscripts\, globes\, and codices from the Hispanic Society’s historic collection. Rodriguez works on handmade amate bark paper using natural pigments derived from minerals\, plants and insects\, as her art is rooted in Indigenous Mesoamerican tlacuilo (painter-scribe) traditions. Her paintings\, maps and codices collapse centuries of history into a single visual field\, connecting early anticolonial uprisings with contemporary struggles around migration\, policing\, racial justice\, and climate crisis. \nThis event is free of charge. Attendees are encouraged to arrive early to view the exhibition. \nGUEST PANELISTS: \nDiana Magaloni – Deputy Director at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA)\, Head Curator of the Department of Art of the Ancient Americas and Director of the museum’s Conservation Center. Specialist in Mesoamerican art and curatorial practice. \nVeronica Pesantes – Writer\, connector\, thought leader\, visionary\, producer\, curator\, advisor\, and art educator. Founder of Miami Art Hang and Decolonizing Project. Specialist in Latinx art and activism. \nRyan Pinchot – Exhibition Co-Curator and Senior Educator at the Hispanic Society. Specialist in Latin American visual culture\, decoloniality\, and environmental humanities.

SUMMARY:Dyckman Farmhouse: Opening Reception - Soon Come\, Likkle More by Jhanique Lovejoy
DESCRIPTION:Soon Come\, Likkle More by Jhanique Lovejoy is an installation of new photographic works that incorporate Black photographic praxis through alternative processes\, textiles\, and sculpture. Featuring everyday images such as passport photos and other ephemera often found in Jamaican homes\, this multi-room experience transports viewers from Washington Heights to Jamaica\, exploring how memory and identity are preserved in domestic and diasporic spaces. \nSoon Come\, Likkle More considers how photography is more than documentation— it is a medium that embodies an archive of diasporic and familial memory. Soon Come\, Likkle More is an ode to Jamaica\, and an ode to Natasha Lovejoy.

SUMMARY:Word Up Recirculation: Gallery Opening -- Elizaveta Kozlova's ANTE PERPETUUM
DESCRIPTION:Word Up celebrates the gallery opening of visual artist Elizaveta Kozlova’s show ANTE PERPETUUM. Join us for drinks\, snacks\, and a discussion with the artist. \nThe show will be up for the month of May at Recirculation\, a project of Word Up. \nAnte Perpetuum (Before Forever) is a series of images created by Elizaveta Kozlova in July 2022. The monochrome photographs decontextualize fragments of driftwood. Discovering the extensive amount of driftwood on the banks of the Hudson River inspired Elizaveta to capture the striking expressivity of its shape and texture that will soon be destroyed by time\, wind and water. \nElizaveta Kozlova is a NYC-based art and portrait photographer whose work has been presented at the Louvre Fifth Annual Exposure Award in 2015. She has been employed nationally and internationally as a fashion and portrait photographer. She has worked for such organizations as The Metropolitan Opera and The New School in New York\, Branksome Hall School and Aprilage Inc. in Toronto. Her art photography work involves an exploration of nature through the prism of chiaroscuro technique as seen in the open_in_newANTE PERPETUUM series. \nThis event is a $5 suggested donation ticket with 80 max attendees. Please register in advance.

SUMMARY:NoMAA: Women in the Heights --Shade
DESCRIPTION:17th annual exhibition
OPENING RECEPTION

CURATED BY ANDREA AROYYO \nShade explores the intersections of light and shadow—literal\, social\, and emotional. In every culture and community\, shade carries layered meanings: it can offer refuge or concealment\, protection or defiance\, acceptance\, or rejection. \nFrom throwing shade to sheltering in shade\, from colorism in race to color range in art\, shade speaks to power\, presence\, and the unseen forces that shape how we move through the world. \nHow does shade define visibility? How do we navigate the tension between exposure and cover\, clarity and ambiguity\, belonging and otherness? \nPARTICIPATING ARTISTS from Harlem\, Washington Heights and Inwood: \nYael Ben-Zion\, Gina K Callaghan\, Arcadia Caraballo\, Gwendolen Cates\, Karin Dando-Haenisch\, Rose Deler\, Carol Diamond\, Dale Emmart-Lieberman\, Kat Gooch-Breault\, Wilhemina Grant-Cooper\, Jyoti Gupta\, Alison Hamilton\, Avery Hines-Mudry\, Kathy Houle\, Carolina Jimenez \, Flor Khan\, Chae Kihn\, Andrea Kornbluth\, Christy Martinez\, Francesca Messina\, Margo Moore\, Rosa Naparstek\, Mesoma Hammida Onyeagba\, Paula Maria Persiani\, Bonnie Jean Phillips\, Leah Poller\, Liz Ritter\, Yumi Rodriguez\, Darcy Rogers\, Susan Rubin\, Anne Saint-Pierre\, Diana Schmertz\, Maria Schoenhammer\, Uniqua Simmons\, Elizabeth Starčević\, Janet Stewart\, Kathleen Sweeney\, Tania Taubes\, Rafaelina Tineo\, April Kristine Tsosie\, Yona Verwer\, Linda Vigdor \n

SUMMARY:Hispanic Society: Fashion in Illuminated Manuscripts--A Conversation with Amanda Wunder
DESCRIPTION:Fashion in the Hispanic Society’s Collection of Illuminated Manuscripts: A Conversation with Amanda Wunder\nJoin us for a moderated conversation with Amanda Wunder\, the curator of the exhibition Spanish Style: Fashion Illuminated\, 1550-1700. Inspired by Spain’s imperial expansion\, elite fashion in 16th and 17th century Spain underwent a profound transformation\, producing opulent garments that radically reshaped the human body and projected an air of wealth and nobility. The talk will focus on the way Professor Wunder utilized the Hispanic Society’s tremendous collection of illuminated manuscripts to chart the development of elite style in early modern Spain. \nThe program begins with light refreshments\, followed by the conversation and a viewing of the exhibition. \nThis conversation is presented in partnership with The Drawing Foundation and forms part of their programming for Drawings Week 2026. \nThe event is free and open to the public. RSVPs are required.

SUMMARY:Sion Papi at Dyckman Farmhouse Museum
DESCRIPTION:Dyckman Farmhouse Museum is proud to present \nSion Papi: A Stop Motion Animation and Art Exhibition by Anne Fernandez\nSion Papi is an animated documentary that follows the story of Anne Fernandez who\, after the death of her father\, embarks on a two-month journey to return his ashes to his homeland— a place she hasn’t set foot in for sixteen years. The exhibition at the Dyckman Farmhouse Museum will feature a screening of Sion Papi alongside a glimpse into Anne Fernandez’s creative process in making the film. \n  \nOpen to The Public: \nMay 9\, 2025 to June 21\, 2025 \nWednesday-Friday: 12pm-4pm \nSaturday: 10am-4pm \n  \nNo registration required! \nMuseum Admission: $3* \n*Dyckman Farmhouse Museum is free for all Uptown residents. \n  \nThis program is supported\, in part\, by\, the Honorable Carmen De La Rosa\, New York City Council\, District 10.
