Afterwards\, there will be a reception with the musicians. \n\nRompiendo barreras  comienza con  Dumbarton Oaks\, Igor Stravinsky’s ingenious and elegant chamber concerto\, inspired by Johann Sebastian Bach’s Brandenburg Concertos . Herencia (“Heritage”) by Andrea Casarrubios is a deeply personal reflection on memory\, identity\, and cultural roots. Inspired by the composer’s Spanish heritage\, the work intertwines lyrical melodies and evocative textures in a moving musical tribute to the traditions and stories that have spanned generations. We conclude our program with Louise Farrenc’s Symphony No. 3. Completed in 1847\, this is generally considered the pinnacle of her orchestral output. Combining the balance of Classicism with the intensity of Romanticism\, the work demonstrates a masterful command of orchestral color\, dramatic structure\, and lyrical invention\, reaffirming her place among the leading symphonic composers of her time.

Full details below. \nFlutist Anna Urrey is a versatile solo\, chamber\, and orchestral musician. She has performed with renowned groups such as The Knights\, New Jersey Symphony\, American Symphony Orchestra\, and the International Contemporary Ensemble. She has performed with the orchestras in the Radio City Christmas Spectacular productions and on Broadway in Camelot. Anna is a member of NYC-based Exponential Ensemble and Frisson\, an acclaimed ensemble that tours nationwide. Recording projects include films Radium Girls and Little Women\, and Principal Flute on the Experiential Orchestra’s GRAMMY-winning recording of Dame Ethel Smyth’s work\, “The Prison.” Anna is a Wm. S. Space is limited for the ball.  \nOne of the United Palace of Cultural Arts’ (UPCA) programming goals is to find innovative ways to make classical music accessible to new and old audiences\, particularly by combining the genre with other art forms. “The Crackalackin’ Concert of Classical Music” serves as a dynamic platform designed to break down barriers and make the beauty of classical music accessible to everyone\, including underrepresented communities\, ensuring it resonates with a diverse and inclusive audience. (NOTE: “Crackalackin’” is old-time (as far back as the 1990s!) urban slang for what’s new\, relevant\, and happening. We think it is a great description of how people should feel about classical music. \nThis year’s theme is Music Brings Us Together and features performances and mash-ups by: \n\nAssociation of Dominican Classical Artists (ADCA) \nDJ Boo \nNew York Baroque Dance Company\nLeadlights Ensemble \nOpera on Tap\nSofrito & the Blues\nWashington Heights Community Choir (WHCC) \n\n“So many people are turned off by classical music because they see it as a corny\, elitist art form\,” said Fitelson\, who 11 years ago co-created The Hip Hop Nutcracker\, now an annual touring show produced by New Jersey Performing Arts Center. “We believe classical music is timeless and seek new\, crackalackin’ ways to help audiences discover it.” \nThe day will kickoff with a performance by the Crackalackin’ Symphony Orchestra\, freshly created for the event by community musicians of all skills. \nThe event features the world-premiere of a collage of videos taken of the Hudson River by Northern Manhattan residents while students from several local community programs\, overseen by ADCA\, perform the musical score live. The music\, Bedrich Smetana’s symphonic poem “The Moldau\,” celebrates another river\, the Vltava which runs through Prague where Smetana became known as the Father of Czech music. \nAnother unforgettable moment will be the United Palace debut of Opera on Tap’s Operacade\, which evokes nostalgia for another time while simultaneously providing innovative\, interactive community engagement. \nFinally\, the New York Baroque Dance Company will simultaneously bring the Crackalackin’ Concert to a close while kicking off the first Crackalackin’ afterparty costume ball\, where guests will have the opportunity to dance to live music on stage with professional dancers\, recreating popular choreographies from 1776-1840. \n“An Uptown Ball – Dancing the Revolution” features dances from the early days of the United States and revolutionary era\, including choreography created in honor of George Washington and music by African-American composer Francis Johnson (1792-1844)\, who was so popular in his time that he was commissioned to create music for Marquis de Lafayette’s Farewell Tour of America in 1824. Dances will be taught to ticket holders at the ball – guests are encouraged to dress in period costume. DESCRIPTION:Featuring the string players of the orchestra\, the Washington Heights Chamber Orchestra concludes our season with Landscapes\, a musical homage to the distant lands that are a part of our heritage. \nProgram: \n\nFela Sowande: African Suite for Strings\nPyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky: Serenade for Strings\n\nEven those born and raised in Washington Heights tend to look back to their heritage in a distant homeland. Talking about “where we are from” is one of the most common unifying conversations in our community. We conclude our 10th anniversary season exploring heritage with Landscapes\, featuring the string players of the WHCO in two large format works hailing from Nigeria and Russia. Fela Sowande is considered the father of modern Nigerian music\, and his piece African Suite for Strings seamlessly blends both original and traditional themes from countries like Nigeria and Ghana into its five contrasting movements. Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky is synonymous with the Russian musical output of the late 19th century and was responsible for other powerhouse works like 1812 Overture and The Nutcracker. We conclude the program with his Serenade for Strings. Tchaikovsky himself believed that this work was one of the finest pieces he ever wrote\, stating it is “a piece from the heart\, and so\, I venture to hope that this work is not without artistic qualities.” \n\nPrior to the concert\, at 2:15pm\, bring the whole family to our “Meet the Instruments” petting zoo where even our youngest listeners can get up close and personal with their favorite instruments before seeing them come alive onstage. This event will take place (weather permitting) in the beautiful setting of the Fort Washington Green\, the community garden space at FWCC.

DESCRIPTION:Bronx Children’s Museum Executive Director and author Denise Adusei Rosario joins Leadlights Ensemble to present a program of music and stories\, featuring her children’s book “Cesaria Feels the Beat\,” a lyrical and heartfelt story about deafness\, community\, and Carnival. \nRising in the Heights is a festival of free outdoor public arts performances curated by Leadlights Ensemble in partnership with Word Up Community Bookshop. The festival celebrates the rich artistic contributions of Latinx and Black cultures and promotes children’s literacy through music and bilingual storytelling. Free copies of the featured book will be available.  \nThis project is made possible in part with funds from UMEZ Arts Engagement\, supported by the Upper Manhattan Empowerment Zone (UMEZ); and Creative Engagement\, supported by The New York City Department of Cultural Affairs (DCLA) in partnership with the City Council and the Howard Gilman Foundation.
