DESCRIPTION:Join us for an intimate conversation with Dr. Noemí Espinosa about the regional costumes featured in Joaquín Sorolla’s mural series Vision of Spain. \nDr. Noemí Espinosa is Associate Curator at the Hispanic Society Museum & Library. She officially joined the institution’s Department of Prints and Photographs in 2007\, where she cataloged and studied the core of the collection\, an exceptional legacy of geographical\, and anthropological value from Spain\, Portugal\, and Latin America. She has also researched extensively the history and art of The Philippines from the 19th and 20th centuries. \nAs an art historian and ethnographer\, Dr. Espinosa is interested in the history of familiar things\, the ones we might take for granted\, and sometimes don’t notice. Her recent research focus is in the collection of Decorative Arts and Textiles\, shifting from a visual to a material culture that more closely represents the development and changes of a society\, its traditions\, taste\, popular beliefs\, and daily life.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for a conversation with internationally recognized multi-media artist Francisco Alvarado-Juárez about his latest book\, Gay Liberation: New York City Pride Parades 1975-1976\, featuring images from Francisco’s 2025 exhibition\, Out of the Closets! Into the Street!: New York City Pride March 1975-1976\, which was exhibited at the Hispanic Society in 2025 as the second installation for Arte en el Alto Manhattan. Featuring 18 photographs\, this exhibition showcased the racial and ethnic diversity of the early Pride parades and revealed the nuanced bonds of kinship formed among marchers from disparate backgrounds. \nThe conversation will be moderated by New York Public Library Director of Collection Development and Global Studies\, Jason Baumann\, \nFrancisco Alvarado-Juárez is an internationally recognized multi-media New York-based artist originally from Honduras. With over 50 individual and 90 group exhibitions\, his oeuvre spans painting\, installation\, mixed-media\, and photography. Francisco’s artwork is represented in museum collections around the world including the Brooklyn Museum of Art\, the Smithsonian American Art Museum\, the Everson Museum of Art\, the Museo Universitario del Chopo in Mexico\, and the Museo Pablo Serrano in Spain. Francisco has additionally won over 25 awards\, including grants from the National Endowment for the Arts\, the Pollock Krasner Foundation\, the Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation\, the Fulbright Program\, and the Monson Arts Center. \nJason Baumann is the Susan and Douglas Dillon Director for Collection Development and Global Studies. He also coordinates the Library’s LGBTQ+ Initiative\, for which he has curated a number of exhibitions\, including Why We Fight: Remembering AIDS Activism and Love & Resistance: Stonewall 50. He is the editor of Love and Resistance: Out of the Closet into the Stonewall Era and The Stonewall Reader. Baumann received his MLS from Queens College\, his MFA in Creative Writing from City College\, and his PhD in English at the CUNY Graduate Center.

DESCRIPTION:Join The Hispanic Society for a panel discussion with Sandy Rodriguez and invited guest speakers about her latest exhibition\, “Tierra Insurgente”. \nTierra Insurgente is the first New York City solo exhibition by Los Angeles–based Chicana artist Sandy Rodriguez. The exhibition brings Rodriguez’s contemporary practice into dialogue with rarely exhibited maps\, manuscripts\, globes\, and codices from the Hispanic Society’s historic collection. Rodriguez works on handmade amate bark paper using natural pigments derived from minerals\, plants and insects\, as her art is rooted in Indigenous Mesoamerican tlacuilo (painter-scribe) traditions. Her paintings\, maps and codices collapse centuries of history into a single visual field\, connecting early anticolonial uprisings with contemporary struggles around migration\, policing\, racial justice\, and climate crisis. \nThis event is free of charge. DESCRIPTION:Join us for an insightful conversation with Dr. Carmen Ripollés and Hispanic Society curator Dr. Patrick Lenaghan focusing on the work of Josefa de Óbidos and Luisa Roldán\, two of the most important women working as artists in the Iberian Peninsula during the 17th century. The program celebrates the recent publication of Josefa de Óbidos by Dr. Ripolles\, part of the Getty’s series Illuminating Women Artists and the first English-language monograph about the pioneering Portuguese painter. \nCarmen Ripollés is a professor of art history at the Schnitzer School of Art\, Art History\, and Design at Portland State University (Portland\, Oregon). She completed her bachelor’s degree in art history at the University of Valencia (Spain)\, and her master’s and PhD in art history at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Her research focuses on the art of the Iberian World during the early modern period\, with emphasis on early modern artistic theory\, notions of artistic identity\, and material culture. \nPatrick Lenaghan is an internationally acclaimed scholar\, who received his B.A. from Columbia University and his Ph.D. from the Institute of Fine Arts\, N.Y.U. He has worked at The Hispanic Society since 1995 as Head of the Department of Prints and Photographs.  organizing  numerous exhibitions\, including Gilded Figures (2021) and Picasso and the Spanish Classics (2023) at the Hispanic Society and Imágenes del Quijote at the Museo Nacional del Prado. He has written widely on Spanish Renaissance and Baroque sculpture (. In 2018\, Dr. Lenaghan was named a corresponding member of the Real Academia de Sta. Isabel de Hungría in Seville.

DESCRIPTION:Fashion in the Hispanic Society’s Collection of Illuminated Manuscripts: A Conversation with Amanda Wunder\nJoin us for a moderated conversation with Amanda Wunder\, the curator of the exhibition Spanish Style: Fashion Illuminated\, 1550-1700. Inspired by Spain’s imperial expansion\, elite fashion in 16th and 17th century Spain underwent a profound transformation\, producing opulent garments that radically reshaped the human body and projected an air of wealth and nobility. The talk will focus on the way Professor Wunder utilized the Hispanic Society’s tremendous collection of illuminated manuscripts to chart the development of elite style in early modern Spain. \nThe program begins with light refreshments\, followed by the conversation and a viewing of the exhibition. \nThis conversation is presented in partnership with The Drawing Foundation and forms part of their programming for Drawings Week 2026. \nThe event is free and open to the public. DESCRIPTION:The fourth and final concert of Antonio Galera’s residency at the Hispanic Society\, Cuadros de una Exposición\, will take place in the Main Court of the Museum. The program continues a major theme of Antonio’s residency\, which has featured both classical and contemporary music. This culminating event will feature works by Granados and Mussorgsky\, as well as the world premiere of two solo piano pieces by Francisco Coll\, commissioned by the Hispanic Society and Antonio Galera. The acclaimed Valencian composer has created two contrasting pieces inspired by Goya and Zurbarán\, both represented in the museum’s collection.

DESCRIPTION:Jennifer Whisenhunt and Graham Roscoe\, Senior Associates from Beyer Blinder Belle\, will lead a behind-the-scenes tour on the restoration and renovation of the campus and will visit the Terrace\, East Gallery\, Main Court\, and Sorolla Gallery. \nEstablished in 1904 as a museum and library devoted to the art and literature of Hispanic cultures worldwide\, the Hispanic Society Museum & Library is the founding institution of the landmark Audubon Terrace cultural campus in the Upper Manhattan neighborhood of Washington Heights\, where it occupies three buildings arrayed around a series of interconnected terraces and courtyards. Starting in 2023\, the main building’s iconic Main Court and renowned Sorolla Gallery reopened to the public\, the first step in a multi-phase restoration and revitalization project led by Beyer Blinder Belle Architects & Planners.
