The work also pays tribute to Joaquín Sorolla’s monumental mural series Vision of Spain\, which documents the people and customs of the Iberian Peninsula\, and which has long inspired Sanford’s work. Coinciding with the 100th anniversary of the installation of the Vision of Spain\, this project honors Sorolla’s legacy through a contemporary reflection that celebrates the Hispanic Society’s Uptown community. \nTom Sanford is a Harlem-based painter whose work captures the energy\, humor\, and contradictions of contemporary life. Drawing on the visual language of pop culture\, politics\, and art history\, Sanford’s “Pop-Surreal-Expressionist” style combines bold color\, expressive brushwork\, and incisive storytelling to portray the beauty and absurdities of modern America. His elaborate tableaux of New York City feature cultural icons and everyday people alike\, inviting reflection on celebrity\, media\, and justice. By transforming the fleeting spectacle of current events into complex human narratives\, Sanford captures the evolving spirit of the urban landscape and its broader national context.

Years later\, when Juan’s fame as a matador soars\, he returns to Seville to marry Carmen. Soon\, Juan’s head is turned by the elegant temptress Doña Sol De Muira (Rita Hayworth)\, and his career takes a turn \nPre-Show: Xianix Barrera Flamenco.  Xianix Barrera is an award-winning\, Bessie Award–nominated flamenco dancer\, choreographer\, and educator based in New York City. A native New Yorker of Puerto Rican and Dominican heritage\, she creates work that centers bold\, tenacious women and unapologetically powerful femininity. \nWith a background in ballet\, modern dance\, jazz\, percussion\, and yoga\, Xianix has devoted herself to the lifelong study of flamenco with masters in New York and Spain. Throughout her career\, she has shared the stage with acclaimed artists. Her performances have taken her to major stages and cultural venues around the world. She also toured internationally with Noche Flamenca’s acclaimed production Antigona. \nPresented in collaboration with Inwood Art Works\, Cine al Fresco is the Hispanic Society’s annual free outdoor film series dedicated to Spanish and Latin American cinema. \nThe program begins at 6pm with a special pre-show live performance followed by the film at 7pm.

In sections that intertwine entertainment\, politics\, art\, technology\, crime\, shopping\, eating\, and recreation\, the book portrays sweeping events such as the Harlem Renaissance\, Prohibition\, and immigration reform through anecdotes of individual experiences that counter the era’s popular conceptions of ballooning wealth and uproarious celebration. Jonathan Ezra Goldman’s whirlwind tour of early 1920s New York City visits an all-female police platoon\, a Black amusement park shut down before it opened\, an Arabic literary salon\, socialist Puerto Rican cigar factories\, Chinatown funerals\, lesbian cafes\, overcrowded jails\, toxic dumps\, and Ku Klux Klan recruitment offices. The grand narratives of the 1920s interweave with little-known anecdotes about well-known figures such as Marcus Garvey\, Dorothy Parker\, and Babe Ruth\, serving as a backdrop to the everyday challenges and triumphs of a city beset by crowds\, automobile traffic\, and rapidly changing technology and urban infrastructure\, as well as erased stories of injustices like Jim Crow practices\, immigration anxieties\, and the violent treatment of political dissent. These stories still resonate today\, showing that this dizzying\, exuberant ride through hidden history can help twenty-first readers see our own moment more clearly. \nJonathan Ezra Goldman is Professor in the Humanities Department at New York Institute of Technology. DESCRIPTION:Live Reading of “Antichrist and the Hermit”\nJoin us for a special reading of the Nahua play “Antichrist and the Hermit” with a pre-show presentation led by translator\, Ben Leeming. \nAntichrist and the Hermit is a 16th century religious play written by Nahua nobleman Fabían de Aquino that tells the story of the Aztec Antichrist\, and his efforts to draw converted Nahuas back to the religious practices of their ancestors. \nDrawing from the history of Nahautl-Christian texts\, this play\, written for Indigenous audiences\, reveals how Nahuas made sense of Christianity and helped form its colonial image. \nSee here for the schedule of events: \n3-3:30pm: Doors Open \n3:30-4pm: Presentation led by translator Ben Leeming about the history of Nahuatl-Christian texts and his experience translating Antichrist and the Hermit \n4-4:30pm: Live reading of excerpts from Antichrist and the Hermit (Performance will be done in original Nahautl with English subtitles provided) \n4:30-5pm: Discussion on contemporary efforts to preserve Nahua culture and the Nahuatl language
