SUMMARY:NoMAA: Opening Art Reception "Dear Earth… Love\, Uptown"
DESCRIPTION:The earth is speaking to us through rising seas\, disappearing forests\, vanishing species. The systems that sustain life — clean air\, fresh water\, stable seasons — are buckling under the strain. These are no longer distant warnings; our planet is in crisis. \nDear Earth is conceived as a visual letter to our planet — an act of address\, apology\, gratitude\, or promise. We invite artists to consider what it means to speak directly to the earth at this moment. Themes include healing and art as a site of repair; the immediacy of the unfolding crisis; calls to action and appeals for planetary change; preservation and cultivation of indigenous lands; the fragility of the earth and our own; uncertainty or hope; the honoring of beauty and resilience; the artist as witness. \nFeaturing 29 artists from West Harlem\, Washington Heights and Inwood: Gloria Adams | Francisco Alvarado-Juárez | Valentina Bardavid Hoecker | Yael Ben-Zion | Stephen Beveridge | Peter Bulow | Oscar M Caballero | Wendy Correa | Franck de las Mercedes | Rose Deler | Mike Estabrook | Lance Foley | Felipe Galindo (Feggo) | Christopher Gomez | Francis Hsueh | ioulex | Vandana Jain |Chae Kihn | Wildriana Paulino | Paula Maria Persiani | Kelly Pfister | Darcy Rogers | Kaé Sato | Tony Serio | Elizabeth Starčević | Emily Stedman | Janet Stewart | Joseph Taylor | Linda Vigdor \n

SUMMARY:NoMAA Labs: CYANOTYPE printing
DESCRIPTION:(Re)turning Home: Portraits of Childhood led by FLOR KHAN is a hands-on\, reflective workshop that invites participants to look to the past as a way of understanding the present. Rooted in self-reflection\, this workshop asks participants to send a portrait of themselves in childhood to the facilitator one week before the workshop date. \nUsing cyanotype\, one of the earliest photographic printing processes\, and plants\, participants will create botanical prints that function as both image and offering: a way to connect personal memory and the natural world. The process emphasizes slowing down\, observing\, and allowing meaning to emerge through making. \nReflection Questions: \nWhat stories live in our lineages and landscapes?\nHow do cycles of nature mirror cycles of personal change?\nWhat does your childhood portrait say to your current ways of being in the world\nHow does art-making help communicate what cannot otherwise be said through words?\n(Re)turning Home: Portraits of Childhood offers an accessible entry point into cyanotype while holding space for reflection\, conversation\, and intuitive learning. \nPlease note: This workshop is on the SECOND FLOOR in NoMAA’s STUDIOS \n**Ticket sales end Friday\, October 9. ** \n

SUMMARY:NoMAA at United Palace: “Uptown Boys”
DESCRIPTION:A new one act play “Uptown Boys” \nAndy Price (Bernie)\, Vincent Saia (Anthony)\, Jonathan Ellers (Ralph)\, and Tuto Taveras (Chico) star in Adrian Miranda’s Uptown Boys\, a raw\, fiercely funny\, and deeply moving drama directed by Adrian Miranda. Set around a four-top table in Washington Heights\, this bilingual one-act play captures the sharp wit\, buried trauma\, and unbreakable bonds of lifelong brotherhood. \nSet during a routine neighborhood card game cluttered with dominos\, chips\, and beer\, Uptown Boys centers on four aging friends whose lives are upended when Bernie (Price) drops a bombshell announcement: he is leaving the Heights for a new life in a different city. The revelation ignites forty years of unhealed turf wars and personal grief\, hitting Ralph (Ellers) hardest as he drowns in the unaddressed loss of his family. But when a sudden\, chaotic dual medical emergency strikes the table\, the masks of machismo must come down\, forcing these men to work as a team to save each other’s lives. Uptown Boys is a powerful exploration of aging\, survival\, and the ultimate strength it takes to finally ask for help.

SUMMARY:NoMAA: Women in the Heights --Shade
DESCRIPTION:17th annual exhibition
OPENING RECEPTION

CURATED BY ANDREA AROYYO \nShade explores the intersections of light and shadow—literal\, social\, and emotional. In every culture and community\, shade carries layered meanings: it can offer refuge or concealment\, protection or defiance\, acceptance\, or rejection. \nFrom throwing shade to sheltering in shade\, from colorism in race to color range in art\, shade speaks to power\, presence\, and the unseen forces that shape how we move through the world. \nHow does shade define visibility? How do we navigate the tension between exposure and cover\, clarity and ambiguity\, belonging and otherness? \nPARTICIPATING ARTISTS from Harlem\, Washington Heights and Inwood: \nYael Ben-Zion\, Gina K Callaghan\, Arcadia Caraballo\, Gwendolen Cates\, Karin Dando-Haenisch\, Rose Deler\, Carol Diamond\, Dale Emmart-Lieberman\, Kat Gooch-Breault\, Wilhemina Grant-Cooper\, Jyoti Gupta\, Alison Hamilton\, Avery Hines-Mudry\, Kathy Houle\, Carolina Jimenez \, Flor Khan\, Chae Kihn\, Andrea Kornbluth\, Christy Martinez\, Francesca Messina\, Margo Moore\, Rosa Naparstek\, Mesoma Hammida Onyeagba\, Paula Maria Persiani\, Bonnie Jean Phillips\, Leah Poller\, Liz Ritter\, Yumi Rodriguez\, Darcy Rogers\, Susan Rubin\, Anne Saint-Pierre\, Diana Schmertz\, Maria Schoenhammer\, Uniqua Simmons\, Elizabeth Starčević\, Janet Stewart\, Kathleen Sweeney\, Tania Taubes\, Rafaelina Tineo\, April Kristine Tsosie\, Yona Verwer\, Linda Vigdor \n
