As a cemetery for free and enslaved Africans from the mid-1600s to the mid-1800s, the Harlem African Burial Ground is a sacred site of New York City’s early history, and yet for decades the site was forgotten and disrespected.
Join us at Word Up for a teach-in on learning, reflection, and action toward abolition and reparations. We will confront the violent history of family separation, the ongoing harm of state surveillance, and the necessity of repair through a 5-point reparations framework.
This talk will examine the lives of women in the Neutral Zone more broadly as well as specific stories of individual women including Mary Philipse Morris and Elizabeth Williams Rutgers Philipse, Ann Fisher Miller, Grace Isaacs Babcock, and Black Loyalists such as Eleanor Fleming and Lydia Tompkins.
