SUMMARY:Word Up Online Event - ROOTS: A Participatory Reading and Understanding
DESCRIPTION:ROOTS (available to order on WordUpBooks.com) is a student-made visual nonfiction book created after a journey through the West Bank and Israel. In this virtual participatory reading\, attendees will read selected pages aloud together\, encountering local testimonies\, student reflections\, illustrations\, and photography. Afterward\, we will hold a calm\, open reflection on listening\, difference\, and the human effort of understanding across a charged and painful topic. \nROOTS was created with contributions from Shanan Liu\, Asuka Hatano (illustrations)\, Chenting Ma (book design)\, Linda Liu\, Jarah Pan (photography)\, Hanan Schlesinger\, Noor Awad\, JK\, Chaeni Lee\, Tianxiao Cao\, Dexter Fang\, and Custard Apple. The book includes testimony\, student reflection\, photography\, illustration\, and design. \nShanan Liu is a Minerva University student and chief editor of ROOTS\, a visual nonfiction book made by Minerva students after traveling through the West Bank and Israel in May 2025. SUMMARY:Virtual Parlor Chat: Trapped Between Armies: New York Women in the Neutral Zone
DESCRIPTION:The American Revolution was largely fought in the backyards of civilians\, especially in New York. After the British took control of New York City in the fall of 1776\, with the Americans retreating north of the Croton River\, the area in between became known as the Neutral Ground or Neutral Zone. \n\n\nFor eight long years\, this area\, which included all of Philipse Manor\, saw unprecedented levels of military battles and skirmishes\, vigilante violence\, and “foraging” for military supplies from the very civilians the armies were purporting to liberate from the enemy. Women were often caught in the middle\, as they struggled to maintain households with men joining armies\, tried to protect themselves and their children from military and vigilante violence including sexual violence\, and to protect their properties and foodstuffs from barn burnings\, cattle rustlers\, and marauding “foragers.” Some had strong political views on the conflict. Others simply tried to survive. \nThis talk will examine the lives of women in the Neutral Zone more broadly as well as specific stories of individual women including Mary Philipse Morris and Elizabeth Williams Rutgers Philipse\, Ann Fisher Miller\, Grace Isaacs Babcock\, and Black Loyalists such as Eleanor Fleming and Lydia Tompkins. \n\n\n

Imani is the Co-founder and Executive Director of Black Families Love and Unite (BLU)\, an organization dedicated to empowering Black and Brown families and dismantling systems of oppression. She holds an MBA and is deeply committed to holistic and restorative justice practices\, including circle keeping and somatic wellness to create meaningful change for our communities. \nNancy Fortunato\, Senior Family Organizer\, has over 10 years of advocacy and organizing experience as an impacted parent and an expert on systemic racism. She graduated from the Child Welfare Organizing Project and the Institute of Transformative Mentoring at The New School. Nancy has held roles at the East Harlem Community Partnership Program\, the Center for Human Development and Family Services\, and RISE\, where she was promoted to Senior Parent Leader. She is currently a Peer Navigator at Justice For Families. \nCassandra Gonzalez\, Family Organizer with two years of advocacy and organizing experience\, is an Afro Latine parent of two boys who embraces inclusivity and gender diversity. With a passion for cooking and a commitment to empowerment\, Cassandra utilizes their life experiences to support and uplift fellow parents\, reflecting their resilience and compassion.
