DESCRIPTION:We’re happy to say that MAGPIE FEST will take place as a two-part concert on a single evening\, this Saturday the 27th!\nRomantic 20th-century works will be juxtaposed with contemporary offerings for a unique blend of classical programming\, ending on a meditative note honoring modernist luminary Morton Feldman’s 100th birth year. \nPart 1\, Sunset (8 pm) features nearly an hour of music\, beginning with George Enescu’s lush\, thrilling Impressions d’enfance and drifting into the night with progressively more meditative works written closer to the present day. All pieces will be played as a continuous stream of music without pauses\, mimicking an album listening session. \nAfter a break and some refreshments\, stick around for part 2\, Meditations (9 pm)\, with two engaging ambient piano works. Magpie violinist Lauren Conroy plays selections from her multi-movement backyard trees + safe and dry\, and the program closes with Palais de Mari\, Morton Feldman’s final piano piece. \nTickets are FREE\, with a $20 suggested donation

DESCRIPTION:Meditative Mondays is a unique experience combining a guided meditation with a live performance of music by some of the most important composers of the 20th and 21st centuries. \nOn June 15th we’ll pair the meditation goal of self reflection with an iconic piece by “mystical minimalist” composer Arvo Pärt.  We’ll perform Spiegel Im Spiegel\, which means Mirror In Mirror\, composed in Pärt’s “tintinnabular” style consisting of a lyrical melody and spare\, “bell-like” accompaniment.  We’ll also perform John Cage’s piece In a Dream\, a meditative arrangement of Miles Davis’ dreamy Blue ‘N Green and a beautiful new piece by Australian composer Elena Kats Chernin. \nSeth Boustead – piano\nVeronika Alter – cello\nMeditation guide by Katie Bellamy

SUMMARY:Little City Studio: Woven Together - Open House
DESCRIPTION:Join us for Woven Together\, a special Little City Studio Open House where families and children will help create a large-scale woven fabric wall installation together.  (Down the driveway\, around back) \nUsing fibers\, fabric\, yarn\, color\, texture\, and simple weaving techniques\, participants will contribute to a growing collaborative artwork that transforms over the course of the event. Part art project\, part community-building experiment\, this installation celebrates creativity\, connection\, and the beauty of many hands working together. \nFamilies will also have an opportunity to explore the studio\, learn about upcoming activities\, discover our 3 main programs\, and experience Little City Studio’s playful approach to art\, design\, engineering\, and hands-on learning. We also invite families to bring old fabric\, textiles\, yarn\, or clothing that may no longer be worth donating. These materials may become part of the installation itself. \nExpect creative messes\, curious children\, and a studio full of imagination. All ages welcome. DESCRIPTION:MOSA Concerts is thrilled to welcome Dust Roots for our second concert of the spring season \nSpecializing in jazz and free improvisation\, the Harlem-based ensemble Dust Roots is led by Colin Babcock\, a trombonist\, composer\, improvisor\, and teacher originally from Pickerington\, Ohio. He is one of the founders of the New York City Brass Choir and the Brownstone Brass Quintet. He is also a member of William Parker’s “Little Huey’s Pocket Watch”\, the Fort Greene Orchestra\, and can be found freelancing in various groups of all genres across the NYC area. He released his albums “Circle” in 2020 and “Concrete” in 2024. DESCRIPTION:In The Places That Inspire Us\, we explore music inspired by real-world settings and the emotional landscapes they evoke. The program begins with Anna Clyne’s Restless Oceans\, a thrilling contemporary work for chamber orchestra that channels the turbulence and strength of the sea. This work draws inspiration and its title from A Woman Speaks – a poem by Audre Lorde.  Next on the program\, WHCO is joined by Ariadne Greif for Samuel Barber’s Knoxville: Summer of 1915\, a nostalgic meditation on childhood and place\, set to the words of James Agee. Concluding our program is Felix Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 3 “Scottish”\, a sweeping tribute to the rugged romance of the Scottish Highlands. \nThis concert will be approximately 1hr\, no intermission. SUMMARY:Our Saviour's Atonement: Ekmeles vocal ensemble Valentines Day "Stimmung"
DESCRIPTION:Ekmeles vocal ensemble gives their annual Valentine’s Day performance of Karlheinz Stockhausen’s landmark 1968 work Stimmung. The work is a touchstone of 20th century composition\, a meditative concert-length work wholly based around a single tone and its acoustically tuned overtones. The spirit of the 60s is present not only in the work’s experimental striving\, but also its personal eroticism\, which inspired Ekmeles’s Valentine’s Day tradition and the title and motto for the event: Stimmung is for lovers. \nStimmung translates literally to “tuning”\, and also can refer to “atmosphere” or “harmony”\, encompassing both the theoretical focus of the work\, and its meditative aspects. Composed while Stockhausen was living on Long Island Sound in Connecticut\, Stimmung is a captivating balance between intellectual rigor and spiritual exploration. The pitch material of the work is derived from a single low Bb\, overtones of which the singers articulate on pulsing rhythmic patterns of vowels. Treating each of the overtones of this fundamental Bb as new fundamentals on which to produce overtones\, Stockhausen multiplies the timbral possibilities of the work into the hypnotic and rich textures it is known for. \nDirector and baritone Jeffrey Gavett will be joined by sopranos Charlotte Mundy and Amber Evans\, countertenor Timothy Parsons\, tenor Tomás Cruz\, and bass Steven Hrycelak.

We will perform a set of contemplative and meditative works\, including a selection from our upcoming album\, as the sun begins to dim over the uptown landscape. \nWe are a violin + piano group that develops community around contemporary music in the neighborhoods of New York City by performing programs that intertwine music from across generational and cultural lines. Named after the bird long known in Western folklore for its obsessive and curious trinket-collecting\, our concerts draw from a wide array of stylistic periods\, weaving together works from disparate eras of music making while continuously circling back to the contemporary form of our craft.
