SUMMARY:Word Up Recirculation: Seth Michelson's HOPE ON THE BORDER with David C. Baluarte
DESCRIPTION:Word Up welcomes award-winning professor Seth Michelson to discuss his new book Hope on the Border: Immigration\, Incarceration\, and the Power of Poetry\, a humanizing story of immigration shown through the lens of undocumented\, unaccompanied children and the poems they write. In conversation with Michelson will be David C. Baluarte\, an immigration attorney and CUNY law professor. \n\n“Heartfelt . . . a surprisingly uplifting call to reform an unjust system.” -Publishers Weekly \n\nThis event is a $5 suggested donation ticket with 30 max attendees. Please register in advance. \nIn compliance with Word Up Community Safety guidelines\, all attendees for this event are encouraged to stay masked. \nRecirculation\, a project of Word Up Community Bookshop\, is located at 876 Riverside Drive (near 160th St.) in Washington Heights\, NYC. You can take the 1 train to 157th St.\, A/C train to 163rd St.\, and the M4 and M5 to Broadway and 159/160th. \nABOUT THE BOOK\nIn heart-wrenching prose\, Seth Michelson faces the U.S. immigration crisis head on-by learning and sharing the stories of migrating people fleeing violence and poverty\, and by leading workshops for minors held inside a maximum-security detention center. Highlighting the experiences of people desperate for safety\, Michelson tirelessly fights for justice and their freedom. Guided through the powerful medium of poetry\, the children share their pasts\, struggles\, hopes\, and dreams. Among them\, Carlitos\, a 13-year-old boy who escaped a gang to try to make a safe and honest life on his own after his mother’s death\, and Karla\, a teenager whose family begged her to flee for safety after she was shot. Remarkably\, they and other children from similar circumstances express themselves with honesty\, passion\, and optimism for a better future. \nMichelson also introduces us to migrating people at the border\, including a woman who was chased from her home amid violence\, and a dedicated father who was arrested and beaten while searching for work to make a more secure life for his wife and daughter. \nWhether relating experiences in a Mexican refugee camp or a U.S. immigration detention center\, Michelson’s prose is brisk and gripping\, offering hard-earned insights into ways we might create a better immigration system that treats all people with dignity. \nABOUT THE AUTHOR\nSeth Michelson is an award-winning professor who has gained recognition from the National Endowment of the Arts and the Fulbright Foundation. He is the author of academic articles\, book introductions\, film and book reviews\, and fourteen books of poetry and poetry in translation. His work has been published in English and Spanish in Argentina\, Mexico\, England\, and Italy\, among other countries. He currently teaches at Washington and Lee University in Virginia where he is the chair of Latin American and Caribbean Studies. He lives in Charlottesville\, Virginia. \nABOUT THE MODERATOR\nDavid C. Baluarte (he/él) joined CUNY School of Law as the Senior Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and a Professor of Law in January 2024. Baluarte is an advocate\, teacher\, and scholar in the areas of immigration\, refugee and statelessness protection\, and international human rights. He has written numerous journal articles\, academic studies\, human rights reports\, and participated in various grant-funded projects and high-profile impact litigation initiatives in these areas.

SUMMARY:Word Up Recirculation: Motorcycles\, Motherhood\, & Writing in Community: Sarah L. Hoiland & María Julia Rossi with Ria Banerjee
DESCRIPTION:Join us for this lively conversation between three author-friends about their recent books and their decade-long writing group. We will discuss two new books: Righteous Sisterhood: Politics and Power in an All-Women’s Motorcycle Club (2025)\, about a women’s motorcycle club\, and Narrar las madres: Derivas de la maternidad en la nueva literatura hispanoamericana (Narrating Mothers: Maternity Drifts in the New Hispanic American Literature\, 2024)\, on recent Latin American fiction about motherhood. We will share tidbits from these works and the implicit connection between two very different projects: the importance of a writing community. The conversation between authors Sarah L. Hoiland and María Julia Rossi will be guided by Ria Banerjee. Conversation will be in English. \nThemes discussed will include representations of women in fiction and nonfiction\, the politics of motherhood\, and race and class dynamics that inform gendered roles. Hoiland\, Professor of Sociology at Hostos Community College\, the Research and Budget Director at the CUNY Academy\, and Principal Investigator of two current National Science Foundation funded research projects. Righteous Sisterhood: Politics and Power in an All-Women’s Motorcycle Club (Temple University Press\, 2025) offers readers a lens through which to see how righteous sisters forge a political community within and through RSMC and invites readers to explore how these women negotiate identity\, politics\, and the pursuit of excellence in an environment that resists change. It is a story of empowerment\, defiance\, and the transformative power of community amid a fractured society—while also revealing themes of disempowerment\, conformity\, and the exclusionary force of political communities. Her research spans a variety of contexts and topics\, but it is centered around questions of identity\, transformation\, and belonging. El libro Righteous Sisterhood: Politics and Power in an All-Women’s Motorcycle Club [Justa hermandad. \nMaría Julia Rossi\, Professor of Modern Languages at CUNY. Dr. Rossi’s most recent book\, Narrar las madres. Maternity Drifts in the New Hispanic American Literature] (Gata Flora\, 2024)\, is an exploration of representations of motherhood in contemporary Spanish-language fiction. It offers an ambitious overview of the narrative about and by mothers published in recent decades in Spanish around the world. Through critical commentary\, it explores common themes\, recurring motifs\, and both shared and individual experiences within literature. She also published Silvina Ocampo marginal in 2024\, that focused on the overlooked works by the Argentine writer. Her research focuses on the intersection of the politics of representation in Latin American and Spanish fiction and gender studies. \nRia Banerjee\, Professor of English at CUNY\, is a longtime resident of Harlem and Washington Heights. SUMMARY:MainStage Concert: WHCO - The Music That Inspires Us
DESCRIPTION:Composers often find inspiration from other music\, drawing from history\, tradition\, and artistic lineage. The Music That Inspires Us begins with Reena Esmail’s Avartan\, a transcendent fusion of Indian and Western classical traditions. Next on the program is Caroline Shaw’s Entr’acte for string orchestra. Written in 2011\, the piece was inspired by a moment in a Haydn string quartet where the music suddenly shifts in tone and texture. Shaw describes Entr’acte as “taking you to the other side of Alice’s looking glass\,” a kind of musical portal that begins in a classical idiom and gradually distorts it. We will conclude the program with Igor Stravinsky’s Pulcinella Suite. Taken from his ballet on the Italian commedia dell’arte character\, the Pulcinella Suite is a witty and colorful homage to 18th-century Italian Baroque music filtered through Stravinsky’s modernist lens. \nRepertoire\n\nReena Esmail: Avartan\nCaroline Shaw: Entr’acte\nIgor Stravinsky: Pulcinella Suite\n\nThis concert will be approximately 1hr\, no intermission. Reception to follow.

SUMMARY:Dyckman Farmhouse: [VIRTUAL] Talking About Race Matters 2025: “Living Afro-Latina Lives: An Afrodiasporic Feminist Approach to Understanding Identity Formation and Political Consciousness” with Dr. Yalidy Matos
DESCRIPTION:Date: September 25\, 2025\nTime: 6pm-7pm\nCost: FREE! \nRegistration Required? YES! Register HERE! \nLocation: Virtual via Zoom \nJoin us for DFM’s Talking About Race Matters virtual lecture series with Dr. Yalidy Matos\, Associate Professor of Political Science at Rutgers University–New Brunswick\, as she presents her newest research\, Living Afro-Latina Lives: An Afrodiasporic Feminist Approach to Understanding Political Consciousness. \nLiving Afro-Latina Lives: An Afrodiasporic Feminist Approach to Understanding Political Consciousness explores how Afro-Latinas— whether born in the U.S. or abroad but primarily residing in the United States—identify and construct their identities\, and how they engage with broader identity categories. Crucially\, the work traces the shift from individual identification to the development of an intersectional Afro-Latina political consciousness. This consciousness isn’t just about how they see themselves—it’s about how they act\, what they believe\, and how they engage politically. Rooted in Black feminist thought\, this intersectional Afro-Latina political consciousness has real consequences for political attitudes and behavior. This works examines how identity becomes action\, and how Afro-Latina lives illuminate the power of lived experience in shaping political life. \nYalidy Matos is Associate Professor of political science at Rutgers University – New Brunswick. Her scholarship sits at the intersection of race\, ethnicity\, gender\, and politics\, immigration\, and identity politics. Her book Moral and Immoral Whiteness in Immigration Politics (OUP) was published in 2023. She graduated from Ohio State University in Columbus\, OH with a PhD in Political Science in 2015\, and Connecticut College in New London\, CT with a Bachelor of Arts in Government and Gender and Women’s Studies in 2009. \nTalking About Race Matters is supported\, in part\, by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council\, and made possible by The Cowles Charitable Trust and the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature.
