SUMMARY:Dyckman Farmhouse: Back Porch History 1776 – A Defining Moment in the Story of Northern Manhattan
DESCRIPTION:Back Porch History: 1776 – A Defining Moment in the Story of Northern Manhattan with Don Rice \nJoin us for a free\, in-person lecture about the American Revolution and Northern Manhattan history at Dyckman Farmhouse Museum! Nearly 250 years ago\, in November 1776\, Dyckman was consumed by warfare. Thousands of British and Hessian soldiers attacked the hillsides and overwhelmed the American defenses there. For the next seven years\, occupying forces sucked the area dry\, leaving behind a countryside devoid of natural resources and pockmarked with wrecked farmsteads and roads. It was a defining moment in Inwood’s past. Using primary sources and rare images\, we’ll relive the events that led up to the battle of Fort Washington in 1776. \nCome learn about the Dyckman family’s role in trying to protect the neighborhood and their home\, and discover if anything still remains from those tumultuous times. \nRSVP Required –  Register on Eventbrite! \nDonRice was board president of the Dyckman Farmhouse Museum Alliance from 2016-2025. In 2009\, he founded the “Lost Inwood” series of popular local history talks and almost a decade later\, in 2019\, Rice co-authored a book of the same name with fellow local historian Cole Thompson. He’s lived with his family in North Manhattan for more than 25 years and is retired from a career in the Broadway Music field.

SUMMARY:NoMAA at United Palace: “Uptown Boys”
DESCRIPTION:A new one act play “Uptown Boys” \nAndy Price (Bernie)\, Vincent Saia (Anthony)\, Jonathan Ellers (Ralph)\, and Tuto Taveras (Chico) star in Adrian Miranda’s Uptown Boys\, a raw\, fiercely funny\, and deeply moving drama directed by Adrian Miranda. Set around a four-top table in Washington Heights\, this bilingual one-act play captures the sharp wit\, buried trauma\, and unbreakable bonds of lifelong brotherhood. \nSet during a routine neighborhood card game cluttered with dominos\, chips\, and beer\, Uptown Boys centers on four aging friends whose lives are upended when Bernie (Price) drops a bombshell announcement: he is leaving the Heights for a new life in a different city. The revelation ignites forty years of unhealed turf wars and personal grief\, hitting Ralph (Ellers) hardest as he drowns in the unaddressed loss of his family. But when a sudden\, chaotic dual medical emergency strikes the table\, the masks of machismo must come down\, forcing these men to work as a team to save each other’s lives. Uptown Boys is a powerful exploration of aging\, survival\, and the ultimate strength it takes to finally ask for help. \nNoMAA Studios 4140 Broadway (Inside the United Palace on 176 Street)

SUMMARY:Word Up: Nicholas Freudenberg's FIGHTING FOR NEW YORK with Merlin Chowkwanyun
DESCRIPTION:Word Up welcomes Nicholas Freudenberg to discuss his new book\, Fighting for New York: Activism for Health and Social Justice Since the 1960s\, with Merlin Chowkwanyun\, author of All Health Politics Is Local. \n“A roadmap for health activists\, Fighting for New York illustrates each step needed for successful advocacy through campaigns conducted by a wide range of city-based community organizations since the 1960s. These stories should inspire any reader to join the movement to make health justice a reality.” Marion Nestle\, author of What to Eat Now: The Indispensable Guide to Good Food\, How to Find It\, and Why It Matters \nABOUT THE BOOK\nWhat would New York City look like without the hard-won victories of social movements? From the Young Lords campaigns to prevent lead poisoning and tuberculosis in the late 1960s to ACT UP’s fight for people affected by AIDS in the early 1990s through Housing Justice for All’s recent advocacy for tenants\, generations of activists have struggled to make the city a healthier and more equal place for all. \nFighting for New York is a pragmatic account of health-focused social movements over the past several decades. Nicholas Freudenberg–a longtime public health professional\, researcher\, and activist–examines a variety of cases\, from campaigns for reproductive rights\, environmental justice\, and free school lunch to the Close Rikers Island and Fight for $15 movements. He analyzes how activist leaders\, members\, and organizations approach injustices\, build coalitions\, frame their messages\, and define success\, considering which strategies worked and which failed to achieve their goals. \nFighting for New York synthesizes the lessons of these campaigns into practical guidance for the activists\, health professionals\, and policy makers of today and tomorrow\, suggesting specific strategies gleaned from decades of experience. Highlighting the voices of activists\, this book is a riveting account of struggles to improve living conditions and uphold human dignity. \nABOUT THE AUTHOR\nNicholas Freudenberg is distinguished professor emeritus of public health at the City University of New York School of Public Health. He has studied\, evaluated\, and participated in activism on childhood lead poisoning\, AIDS prevention\, urban food policy\, environmental justice\, and mass incarceration. Freudenberg is the author of several books\, most recently At What Cost: Modern Capitalism and the Future of Health (2021).
