SUMMARY:Lost Inwood: 250 years ago the Revolution came Uptown –
DESCRIPTION:LOST INWOOD  \n-250 years ago the Revolution came Uptown – \n-TUESDAY NOVEMBER 3rd\, 7:30PM at THE INWOOD FARM – \n250 years ago THIS MONTH the decisive Battle of Fort Washington was fought in uptown Manhattan. All around today’s Inwood and Washintgon Heights\, soldiers fought and died for their passionate cause\, the independence of a new American nation.  At the time\, they were just trying to stay alive and carry the day. Little did they know what a timeless historical moment it was. \nWe’ll hear about all of it. From top secret submarines to huge barrier chains stretched across the Hudson. From sabotaged artillery to King George’s leaden head on a spike. And of course the bone-jarring battle\, where all hell broke loose\, all of Manhattan was at stake\, and George Washington was there\, beginning to mature into the founding father he would become. \nCome learn about the deserters and traitors\, the artists\, essayists\, bagpipers(!) and unsung local heroes of the American Revolution. We’ll hear tales told in the soldiers’ own words\, and see the secret messages sent between Washington and his trusted generals as the British put the squeeze on Manhattan Island. \nPlease join us Tuesday November 3rd 7:30pm at THE INWOOD FARM. It’s free to the public\, but reservations are highly recommended.

SUMMARY:Fountain Bookshop: Queer Lit Saved Me "I Make Envy on Your Disco"
DESCRIPTION:Join us at the Fountain Bookshop in Washington Heights for Queer Lit Saved Me! After beloved NYC bookstore Oscar Wilde closed\, former employee and former FBS manager Cecelia wanted to create a book club dedicated to queer literature in its honor\, and to emphasize the importance of LGBTQ+ stories for all. \nJoin us for a discussion with the author during the meeting! \nBook Description: Winner of the Barbara DiBernard Prize in Fiction \nIt’s the new millennium and the anxiety of midlife is creeping up on Sam Singer\, a thirty-seven-year-old art advisor. Fed up with his partner and his life in New York\, Sam flies to Berlin to attend a gallery opening. There he finds a once-divided city facing an identity crisis of its own. In Berlin the past is everywhere: the graffiti-stained streets\, the candlelit cafés and techno clubs\, the astonishing mash-up of architecture\, monuments\, and memorials. \nA trip that begins in isolation evolves into one of deep connection and possibility. In an intensely concentrated series of days\, Sam finds himself awash in the city\, stretched in limbo between his own past and future—in nightclubs with Jeremy\, a lonely wannabe DJ; navigating a flirtation with Kaspar\, an East Berlin artist he meets at a café; and engaged in a budding relationship with Magda\, the enigmatic and icy manager of Sam’s hotel\, whom Sam finds himself drawn to and determined to thaw. I Make Envy on Your Disco is at once a tribute to Berlin\, a novel of longing and connection\, and a coming-of-middle-age story about confronting the person you were and becoming the person you want to be. \nAbout the Author\nEric Schnall has worked on and off Broadway as a producer and marketing director for more than twenty-five years. He won a Tony Award for the Broadway revival of Hedwig and the Angry Inch and a Lucille Lortel Award for Fleabag. He has also written about techno and electronic music for Billboard and Revolution\, profiling DJs and musicians from around the world.

SUMMARY:Word Up: The True Cost of True Crime - Book Talk with Kristi D. Osorio and Melissa Tanis
DESCRIPTION:Join local organizer Melissa Tanis and author Kristi D. Osorio for a panel discussion addressing the realities and harms of true crime media on survivors of crime and families who have been impacted by the criminal justice system. Topics will include the direct effect of true crime on Tanis and Osorio’s own families\, as well as how the true crime industry perpetuates myths around crime\, safety\, punishment\, and whose stories “deserve” to be told. \nOsorio’s new book\, “The Sound of Burning: A Mother\, a Daughter\, a Murder” \,combines memoir and cultural critique to tell a story of coming of age after her mother murdered her grandmother in the home they shared when Osorio was a teen. Tanis\, who reconnected with her incarcerated father after watching a documentary he was in\, will share about her own experience of filming for a follow-up documentary\, the ups and downs of publicly sharing her story\, and how media can both repair and harm those impacted by incarceration. Both Tanis and Osorio will bring nuance\, lived experience\, and abolitionist values to a conversation that often mimics the black-and-white thinking promoted by the true crime industry and the carceral state. \nPlease register in advance. \nABOUT THE PRESENTERS\nKristi D. Osorio is the author of the memoir The Sound of Burning: a Mother\, a Daughter\, a Murder (University of Georgia Press\, 2026). In 2023\, she won the Indiana Review Creative Nonfiction Prize and the Sonora Review “Mercy” Contest in Nonfiction. She has served communities affected by the criminal justice system through writing\, teaching\, and advocacy at Rikers Island\, Columbia School of Social Work’s Beyond the Bars\, and the Vera Institute of Justice. She teaches at Texas Tech University. \nMelissa Tanis is a community organizer and abolitionist. She advocates both on a policy and personal level for people to be freed from prison. She also organizes for tenant power in her building and her neighborhood. She believes in collective liberation\, skill sharing\, mutual aid\, and building the conditions now of the world we want to live in. \n

SUMMARY:Holy Trinity Church: Threads Between Us
DESCRIPTION:A two-day gathering of art\, writing\, music\, film\, food\, and community created in collaboration with friends and cultural workers in Gaza and Upper Manhattan. \nAt the center of the event are the voices and creative work of people in Gaza—not simply as witnesses to devastation\, but as artists\, writers\, parents\, students\, teachers\, and makers with stories\, ideas\, humor\, beauty\, and lives that extend far beyond the headlines. \nThreads Between Us will bring together artwork and photography\, projected writing\, film screenings\, live music and conversation\, Palestinian food\, a bookstore\, a marketplace\, children’s activities\, and workshops exploring meaningful ways to participate in mutual aid for Gaza. \nFriday evening will offer a donation-based preview with art\, music\, film\, light food\, and conversation. Saturday’s full-day gathering will expand the program with workshops\, educational events\, activities for children\, shopping\, and opportunities to meet members of the community behind the work. Children are welcome throughout the weekend. \nThe event is both a cultural celebration and a fundraiser. Proceeds will directly support families in Gaza and the artists\, writers\, educators\, and community-led initiatives whose work is being shared. \nThreads Between Us grows from nearly three years of relationships between people in Gaza and a grassroots community in Upper Manhattan. It is an invitation to encounter one another across distance—not through abstraction or numbers\, but through the work people make\, the stories they choose to tell\, and the connections we continue to build together.

SUMMARY:Up Theater: "Desperately Seeking the Exit"
DESCRIPTION:A special live reading of the international hit show about a sh*t show … with bonus footage! \nIn 2007\, American actor and playwright Peter Michael Marino wrote a musical based on the film “Desperately Seeking Susan\,” featuring the hit songs of Blondie. It opened on London’s West End…and closed a month later. Whoops! This high-octane\, comical roller coaster ride has played everywhere from Edinburgh to London\, and LA to NYC. The critically-acclaimed solo show fills in the blanks of how the $6 million musical was made\, and unmade. From hatching the idea to deals with MGM\, Debbie Harry\, and even Madonna – all the way to thrilling workshops\, dangerous previews\, scathing reviews\, closing night\, and beyond. \nPeter Michael Marino is a NYC-based writer\, producer\, performer\, and educator whose work has been seen on five continents. Pete recently performed his epic\, sci-fi\, tabletop adventure\, “Planet of the Grapes” – which received 4-star reviews and a Malcolm Hardee Comedy Award Nomination at the 2026 Edinburgh Festival Fringe. He’s the creator of the long-running\, critically acclaimed\, interactive family comedy “Show Up\, Kids!” – which continues to run in NYC after 8 years. Pete was a frequent collaborator with The (former) Kennedy Center and Washington National Opera\, creating several educational videos and live stage shows.

SUMMARY:Inwood Art Works: Select Works by Yiorgos
DESCRIPTION:Opening celebration: Select Works by Yiorgos \nYiorgos is pleased to present his work at Inwood Art Works this Fall (2026). He has successfully exhibited at ChocNYC (February 2025) and Kuro Kirin (Fall 2024). His pieces are to be found in several private collections. Yiorgos (George Tsugranes) retired in 2018 from his professions as a floral designer and a middle school math teacher for the Annenberg-funded arts program of JHS 22 and at the Special Music School near Lincoln Center. He has been creating visual art ever since. Yiorgos’s art is always life-affirming\, playful\, and appealing. He has shaped a unique style that is instantly recognizable\, bringing an appreciation of organic forms and the omnipresence of geometry to his work. When not creating stirring images\, he enjoys playing classical and jazz music at the piano\, traveling abroad\, and taking long walks with his wife and Labrador retriever. \nYiorgos has carefully selected works from several periods of his creative life\, including Geometric Landscapes in a riot of color and pure Abstractions in black and white. From Greek villages to industrial skylines\, from sere mountains to turgid seas\, these selections demonstrate his curiosity and wide-ranging vision. \nOn Exhibition November 3-14\, 2026

SUMMARY:Word Up: Asale Angel-Ajani's FUGITIVE ARCHIVE
DESCRIPTION:Word Up welcomes writer and anthropologist Asale Angel-Ajani to discuss her memoir Fugitive Archives: My Family and the American Myth of Belonging\, an incisive\, lyrical exploration of one family’s history that radically overturns American myths about race\, violence\, and belonging. \nABOUT THE BOOK\nAngel-Ajani and her twin\, the only Black children in a working-class white family\, were shuffled between relatives\, coming of age in a country that offered little refuge. Raised in the gaps left behind\, they learned how race and betrayal shaped their family legacy and the identities they inherited. When her grandmother\, the family’s record keeper\, died\, Angel-Ajani took up the archive\, looking for answers—about her mother’s abandonment\, her father’s legal struggles\, and her grandmother’s passage from overt racism to an improbable love with her Black step-grandfather. Most urgently\, she sought to understand the origins of her inescapable anger. \nTracing ancestors enslaved\, Indigenous\, free\, and white\, Angel-Ajani uncovered how people survived violent systems that rewarded compliance and punished mercy—and how some carved pockets of resistance\, whose acts of resistance rippled across generations. Through stories of stolen land\, the enslavement and murder of her earliest ancestor\, her great-grandmother’s role in the WKKK\, and the incarceration of a step-grandmother and uncle in a Japanese internment camp\, she weaves her linage into the national narrative\, exposing connections deliberately erased from official accounts. She reveals a country not of strangers split into “us” and “them\,” but of lives deeply entangled. \nIn a moment defined by moral exhaustion\, rising violence\, and historical erasure\, Fugitive Archives lays bare a nation’s unresolved past through one family’s story of grief\, betrayal\, courage\, and love. It is both a testament and an invitation—a vital exploration of race and class\, a map for survival and resistance\, and a necessary reckoning with the truths we inherit to reshape a more just future. \nABOUT THE AUTHOR\nAsale Angel-Ajani is a writer and anthropologist whose work examines race\, migration\, incarceration\, gender\, and belonging. She is an associate professor and director of Women’s and Gender Studies at The City College of New York\, with affiliations in anthropology\, international studies\, and Black studies. She is the author of the novel A Country You Can Leave and the nonfiction book Strange Trade\, and has taught at the University of Texas at Austin\, New York University’s Gallatin School\, and Hong Kong Baptist University. Her fellowships and grants include support from the Ford\, Mellon\, and Rockefeller foundations and a Hutchins Family Fellowship at Harvard University’s Hutchins Center for African and African American Research. She holds a PhD in anthropology from Stanford University and an MFA in creative writing from the University of Hong Kong.
