SUMMARY:United Palace: The Muse - Ode to Our Mothers
DESCRIPTION:Is your mom best represented by “To My Mother” by Edgar Allan Poe\, “The Joy Luck Club” by Amy Tan\, or “The Runaway Bunny” by Margaret Wise Brown—or perhaps something more contemporary like “Remember” by Joy Harjo or “Good Bones” by Maggie Smith? \nJoin us Monday\, May 11\, for a special post–Mother’s Day Muse dedicated to honoring the mothers and caregivers who shape and nurture our lives. Guests are invited to share out loud a short poem\, story\, or passage (1–3 minutes) in gratitude or remembrance\, in a warm and family-friendly setting. Bring your favorite text or one you penned yourself. Led by Niria Leyva-Gutiérrez\, this heartfelt evening will celebrate love\, memory\, and connection—complete with sweet treats\, just like mom used to make. \nDoors open at 6:30pm. The Muse begins at 7:00pm.

SUMMARY:Word Up Community Bookshop: Leah Kim's MOM\, UNFILTERED with Frederick Joseph
DESCRIPTION:Word Up welcomes mental health advocate and storyteller Leah 수진 Kim to discuss her new book\, Mom\, Unfiltered: Maternal Mental Health and Finding Freedom Through Motherhood\, a deeply personal examination of the dire state of our maternal and postpartum care for mothers. \nIn conversation with Kim will be Frederick Joseph\, author of This Thing of Ours and Patriarchy Blues: Reflections on Manhood. \nThis event is a $5 suggested donation ticket with 30 max attendees. Please register in advance. \nABOUT THE BOOK\nFor expecting and new parents\, too often the care is so focused on a healthy baby that the mother’s physical and mental needs are overlooked. Mothers face intense pressure to have the perfect birth plan\, breastfeed with ease\, and immediately bond with their baby. Unfortunately\, these expectations can lead to anxiety\, depression\, and overwhelm. But it doesn’t have to be that way. \nMom\, Unfiltered is profoundly personal and brutally honest\, yet it is ultimately deeply hopeful. It is about survival and growth\, an invitation to move beyond our current social\, cultural\, and familial realities to support mothers in a meaningful way-physically\, mentally\, and spiritually.

SUMMARY:Morris-Jumel Mansion: Virtual Parlor Chat "Indigenous New York with Oleana Whispering"
DESCRIPTION:Virtual Parlor Chat: Indigenous New York with Oleana Whispering.  An introductory oral historical account and cultural interpretation of the Indigenous ethnos and landscape of New York from 1654 to today. \nWhat was the landscape and community life of the place known then as Manahatta and known today as Manhattan? Who were the first tribes that the Dutch encountered and formed relations with? How did Pearl Steet inherit its name? Did the Dutch influence or impact the indigenous people? Were NewYork’s Indigenous expunged with the Indian Removal Act? Who were the chiefs\, and did they live in a patriarchal or matriarchal society? This dialogue answers questions rarely addressed based upon documented historical records and taps into how they exist today in the shadows of an internationally famous metropolis. \nAbout the speaker: Oleana Whispering Dove has worked as a museum professional for over 20 years and curates Native American programs\, spotlighting Traditional and Contemporary Indigenous artists. Likewise\, Oleana is Smithsonian Museum-trained in Lenape Indigenous history and fulfills public speaking engagements on the topics of Carving Out a Legacy and Historic Native American Women Chiefs\, which reflect her Indigenous heritage as a Native American descendant .
