SUMMARY:Word Up Recirculation: Coltrane (100th) Celebration with the Joseph Herbst Big Band
DESCRIPTION:Coltrane Celebration celebrates the life and music of John Coltrane\, with this year marking his centennial. The show’s first performance was in 2019 in North Carolina\, Coltrane’s home state\, while this show is the New York premiere. The show features both arrangements of Coltrane’s music and original music inspired by Coltrane’s life written for 17-piece jazz band by Joseph Herbst. \nSpoken word is interwoven throughout the show\, bringing to life Coltrane in his own words as the script is all pulled from interviews and writings by Coltrane\, allowing those less familiar with Coltrane’s work to be fully immersed as well. While drawing some inspiration from his music directly\, the show explores the beliefs\, philosophy\, and morality of Coltrane as seen in his interviews\, resulting in a new experience of Coltrane as a person as well as a musician. \nFeatured arrangements include “Giant Steps\,” “Lonnie’s Lament\,” and “After the Rain\,” along with compositions inspired by “Equinox\,” “Like Sonny\,” and “Pursuance.” Join us as we celebrate both a North Carolina and New York icon! \nABOUT THE ARTIST\nHailing from the Carolinas\, composer and woodwindist Joseph Herbst uses music as a medium for storytelling. In 2021\, he released his debut album\, This is Our Environment\, bringing together original music\, spoken word\, and environmental justice. Works in progress include his first big band album\, Into the Void of My Dreams\, exploring personal change through an original story of a person entering their Dreamworld\, and his theatrical show\, Ghosts in the Mirror\, exploring internalized messages and how we handle them. When not leading his own projects\, Joseph works avidly as a copyist with a goal of assisting composers\, working with notable figures such as Etienne Charles\, Mike Garson\, Alan Ferber\, Jon Cowherd\, Darcy James Argue\, and Elio Villafranca. Joseph received the ASCAP Young Jazz Composers Award (2021\, 2023\, 2024)\, the ASCAP Johnny Mandel Prize (2023)\, and the 24th Charlie Parker Jazz Composition Prize and Manny Album Commission (2023)

SUMMARY:Recirculation Word Up: John Washington's HOW TO CLOSE A CAMP
DESCRIPTION:John Washington’s HOW TO CLOSE A CAMP: DISPATCHES FROM THE FIGHT AGAINST IMMIGRANT DETENTION \nWord Up welcomes reporter and award-winning translator John Washington to discuss his new book\,”How to Close a Camp: Dispatches from the Fight Against Immigrant Detention”\, an urgent polemic and practical guide to dismantling the immigrant detention system. \n“An urgent\, courageous book…. Please read it\, both to witness the vital stories that Washington captures with grace and rigor\, and to study the moral blueprint it presents to us all.” -Sarah Stillman \nABOUT THE BOOK\nMasked federal agents are kidnapping and killing our neighbors\, on the streets and behind the bars of hundreds of detention centers across the country. In How to Close a Camp\, award-winning journalist and translator John Washington offers a galvanizing\, clear-eyed case for why we must close these camps and how to do it. \nIn spite of the decades-long growth of immigrant detention\, communities have been fighting back against camps–and winning. Washington distills strategies and lessons from successful campaigns to close camps and block or slow the opening of new ones\, drawing on conversations with veteran organizers from the movement.  Chipping away at the infrastructure of the camp is the only way to stave off increasing xenophobic and authoritarian violence. It is time to close all the camps and build a world that no longer requires them. \nABOUT THE AUTHOR\nJohn Washington is a journalist covering the border\, climate change\, democracy\, and more. He has written for The Atlantic\, The Washington Post\, The Nation\, The Intercept\, and other outlets. He is the author of The Case for Open Borders and The Dispossessed: A Story of Asylum at the US-Mexico Border and Beyond. Washington is also a translator of books by Anabel Hernandez\, Sandra Rodriquez Nieto\, and others. His most recent translations include The Hollywood Kid by Óscar Martínez and Juan Martínez\, and Blood Barrios by Alberto Arce\, which won a PEN Translates Award. Both were co-translated along with Daniela Ugaz. He lives in Tucson\, AZ.

SUMMARY:Word Up: BODEGA CATS OF NEW YORK with Dan Rimada
DESCRIPTION:Get to know the working cats of New York City and the owners of these neighborhood stores! Word Up welcomes Dan Rimada\, the founder of the beloved archive Bodega Cats of New York (now a book with the same name)\, which led to bodega cat legislation in New York City and New York State! \nTo celebrate the cats in our neighborhood\, we’ll be hosting a cat supply drive in November! Feel free to drop off supplies before the event at Word Up Community Bookshop or the fridge outside the shop starting November 3rd. \n“New York City is the world’s melting pot\, and the place where it all happens is the bodega. It is a safe space built into your neighborhood’s corner to provide warmth\, a hot meal\, and the most perfect part of New York City culture: THE bodega cat. Dan Rimada has captured the soul of these spaces perfectly. As someone who has been at the forefront of documenting the cats that manage these shops citywide\, I can tell you firsthand: we would be nothing without them and the papis\, habibis\, and ocks who pour so much love into their bodegas. They are the heart of New York City.” —Michelladonna\, Actor and Host of Mad Realities’ Shop Cats \nPlease register in advance. \nABOUT THE BOOK\nBodega Cats of New York is the first book to document these working cats—and social media superstars—with the access and intimacy they deserve. The cats represent the last generation of true working animals in NYC. Through four years of building relationships across all five boroughs\, author Dan Rimada and photographer Gulce Kilkis have gained unprecedented access to capture both the cats and the immigrant families who’ve built their lives around these neighborhood stores\, which serve as anchors for their communities. Featuring beautiful photographs and brief\, touching narratives of 60 cats from all five boroughs\, this book provides a behind-the-scenes look at this New York City phenomenon\, including: – The informal community networks that keep these cats healthy and loved – Heartfelt customer interactions with their favorite felines – Individual cat personalities and their daily territories – Owners’ stories about how cats became family members – And much more! \nBodega Cats of New York isn’t another cat book; it’s a documentation of one of the last authentic pieces of old New York—the family-owned corner stores where cats still do what they’ve done for centuries: work for a living\, charm the customers\, and make every day a little better for everyone they meet. Whether you’re a cat fan\, a store regular\, or take an interest in photography\, this photo book will tug on your heartstrings and delight you. \nABOUT THE AUTHOR\nDan Rimada is the founder of Bodega Cats of New York\, an archive documenting New York City’s working bodega cats through their names\, routines\, stores\, owners\, workers\, and stories. He began the project in 2022 after noticing Luna\, his local bodega cat\, and realizing how little of this everyday New York institution had been formally recorded. Since then\, Bodega Cats of New York has documented cats across all five boroughs\, built a public archive\, and launched the campaign to protect New York’s bodega cats. The campaign’s viral petition helped lead to bodega cat legislation in New York City and New York State.

SUMMARY:NoMAA Labs: PHOTOGRAPHY beginner's guide
DESCRIPTION:From Auto to Manual: A Guide to Mirrorless Photography with TONY LOPEZ \nThis class is designed for beginners who own a mirrorless camera—or smartphone photographers who are ready to take the next step and discover the creative possibilities of a dedicated camera. \nThis classroom-based introduction takes the mystery out of modern mirrorless cameras and teaches you what happens beyond Auto mode. You’ll learn how cameras and lenses work and explore the fundamentals that give photographers creative control\, including the exposure triangle (aperture\, shutter speed\, and ISO)\, metering\, exposure compensation\, shooting modes\, autofocus\, white balance\, histograms\, and RAW vs. JPEG. We’ll also cover essential lens concepts\, including focal length\, prime vs. zoom lenses\, maximum aperture\, and full-frame vs. crop-sensor lenses. \nNo prior photography experience is required\, and you don’t need to already own a mirrorless camera. If you’ve been taking photos with your phone and are considering stepping up to a mirrorless camera—or you already own one and want to finally understand what all those settings do—this course is for you. \nParticipants are welcome to bring their mirrorless cameras; however\, because menu systems and controls vary widely among camera brands and models\, the course will focus on universal photography concepts rather than step-by-step instructions for making adjustments on individual cameras.

SUMMARY:Cabrini Shrine: Al Menos Cantos Album Presentation
DESCRIPTION:On Discovery of Puerto Rico Day – join us for an evening of music as Puerto Rican mezzo-soprano Laura Virella and Russian-Mexican pianist Alla Milchtein present Al Menos Cantos. Released by Lexicon Classics\, the album is the first commercial studio recording devoted to the art songs of Jack Délano\, a composer and photographer who made Puerto Rico his home. His music brings together Eastern European and Caribbean influences in intimate settings of Spanish-language poetry. \nExploring memory\, identity\, and the human spirit\, this program celebrates Puerto Rican song\, poetry\, and the power of music to preserve stories and bring awareness to a very talented composer and photographer. Born Yakov Ovcharov in 1914 in Voroshylivka\, then part of the Russian Empire and now in Ukraine\, Délano immigrated to the United States with his family in 1923 and settled permanently in Puerto Rico in 1946. There\, Délano and his wife Irene contributed to the filmmaking work of the Department of Public Education’s Community Education Division. Délano composed scores for many of its films and directed Los Peloteros\, a story about rural children and their love of baseball that became a classic of Puerto Rican cinema.Jack Délano’s legacy lies in his remarkable contribution to American cultural life\, using photography\, film\, and music to document everyday people\, preserve Puerto Rican culture\, and capture the human experience with artistic depth and social purpose. \nPuerto Rican mezzo-soprano Laura Virella is a compelling musical storyteller whose international performances include appearances at Carnegie Hall\, Long Beach Opera\, and Wolf Trap Opera. Since 2016\, she has championed Puerto Rican art song\, bringing overlooked music and poetry to new audiences through thoughtfully curated recitals. Al Menos Cantos\, her debut album\, reflects her dedication to preserving and sharing Puerto Rico’s cultural heritage. \nBorn in Russia and raised in Mexico\, Alla Milchtein is a New York–based collaborative pianist who performs with singers\, instrumentalists\, and chamber ensembles. She brings that cross-cultural perspective to her collaboration with Virella\, illuminating the musical traditions that meet in Délano’s songs.\nProduction: \nNatalie Burlutskaya is a producer\, curator\, and artist manager\, the founder of RE:ARTISTE International Art Organization and Spotlight Artists. She curated and produced an array of art projects – from visual art exhibitions to interdisciplinary performances – bringing together expertise in arts administration\, marketing\, and public relations. Her work spans music\, theater\, and visual art\, with projects including a production at Carnegie Hall\, collaborations with the theater project Daughters of Troy\, and concerts celebrating cultural heritage and immigrant artists. Through her productions and artist advocacy\, she creates opportunities for artists to connect with audiences and share their stories across disciplines and cultures.

SUMMARY:Inwood Art Works: STILL ALIVE Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:STILL ALIVE: Seeing friends in Gaza.  Portraits\, as they see themselves. \nMalak. Hind. Adel. Nabil. Heba. Mona. Mohammed. Sobhi. These are some of the people at the heart of Still Alive—friends in Gaza whose lives have become closely connected with people in Inwood. \nThe exhibition brings their photographs into the gallery at a scale we rarely give to the images people share in everyday life. Made by them or with their participation\, the portraits show people as they have chosen to be seen: with family and friends\, in moments of humor\, tenderness\, pride\, and ordinary life. They also hold the knowledge of what it takes to make and share such images in Gaza now. \nOver the past several years\, friendships have grown through messages\, photographs\, fundraising\, and direct support. Still Alive grows from those relationships. It invites visitors to spend time with the people in the photographs\, to learn their names\, and to see more of their lives than any account of a crisis can hold. \nPresented by Goods for Gaza at Inwood Art Works Studio \nStill Alive runs November 15 through December 5\, 2026.

SUMMARY:Word Up Recirculation: "The Cycle Ends with Me" book launch
DESCRIPTION:Word Up welcomes Yessenia Lajara to celebrate the launch of “The Cycle Ends with Me: A Guide to Healing Your Inner Child”\, which explores themes of healing\, motherhood\, mental health\, and breaking generational cycles. The event will also feature a spoken word performance centered on motherhood\, a live musical performance\, audience Q&A\, and a book signing. \nPlease register in advance. \nABOUT THE BOOK\nBeing raised in a culture rich in love\, sacrifice\, resilience\, and community\, Yessenia Lajara explores the often-unspoken reality many children of immigrants experience: parents who worked tirelessly to provide physically\, yet often lacked the emotional tools to nurture the wounds they themselves carried. \nThe Cycle Ends With Me blends psychology\, trauma-informed research\, reflective exercises\, and practical healing tools to help readers understand how generational trauma\, emotional neglect\, and family survival patterns continue to influence self-worth\, relationships\, boundaries\, anxiety\, and the way we move through the world. While rooted in the experience of a first-generation daughter\, her story speaks to anyone who has ever carried family expectations\, questioned their worth\, or wondered where their emotional pain truly began. \nMore than a guide to healing\, it is a love letter to first-generation daughters\, a conversation many families never had\, and a reminder that understanding where your pain began is often the first step toward ending the cycle. \nABOUT THE AUTHOR\nYessenia Lajara is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker\, Certified EMDR therapist\, first-generation Dominican daughter\, and author of The Cycle Ends With Me. Growing up between where her family came from and who she was becoming\, Yessenia understands that healing is not about having all the answers. It is about having the courage to ask hard questions and create a new path for ourselves and the generations that come after us. \nAs a first-generation Latina\, her work centers emotional healing\, self-compassion\, and culturally informed mental health support. Through therapy\, education\, and storytelling\, she empowers others to reclaim their voice\, embrace vulnerability\, and begin the journey toward healing.  Her mission is to help others remember that healing can begin with one brave conversation.

SUMMARY:YM&YWHA of Washington Heights/ Inwood: Uptown Arts & Culture Pop-Up Series - Rock the Heights!
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate community with live music\, art\, mini guitar-making\, seasonal snacks\, and festive fun for all ages!  Guitar Guitar Guitars! Rock on! \nDesign Your Dream Guitar / Led by Gal Cohen: A hands-on art workshop where you’ll use colorful craft materials to create a mini guitar that’s uniquely yours! \nLive Music: Kaki King & Tamar Eisenman \nPresent: SEI (Italian for “six” and also “you are”) features 16 guitars\, transforming the stage and forming a constellation of sound. The heart of SEI is music composed through choreographed movement; each note in SEI born from physical motion\, creating… a rich\, embodied musical language that blurs the line between composition and dance. The Music in SEI travels between different reflections of our day to day life; “You are” coming to life over and over again\, whether it’s through Love\, Hate\, Parenthood\, Creativity\, and/or Compassion. With only guitars\, tailored tuning and synced movement by the players\, SEI is a deep and playful dialogue of guitars\, weaved through body language and masterful guitar skills. \nSnacks for Hanukka and community candle lighting! \nSee you there! This event is all ages! \n
