SUMMARY:MOSA Concerts: Magpie Fest 2026 "Sunrise/Sunset"
DESCRIPTION:Magpie Fest 2026: A series of concerts celebrating the many shades of our past programming! \nJoin Magpie Duo over the course of two concerts a week apart for an engaging\, multifaceted selection of our favorite repertoire over our past year+ of programming. \nSunrise/Sunset (June 20\, 8 pm) takes our Sunset Concert concept—beginning with a familiar piece and moving to more experimental realms—and reverses the format\, with shorter works building up to George Enescu’s lush\, thrilling Impressions d’enfance. \nFor John Cage (June 27\, 8 pm) brings us back to Morton Feldman’s massive\, whispery work of the same name\, which we performed for the first time at Columbia University in October. We’re so excited to share the piece again\, this time in the resonant\, light-filled OSA Church sanctuary. \nFree and open to the public with a $20 suggested donation—RSVP required

SUMMARY:Hispanic Society: Panel Discussion on Sandy Rodriguez "Tierra Insurgente"
DESCRIPTION:Join The Hispanic Society for a panel discussion with Sandy Rodriguez and invited guest speakers about her latest exhibition\, “Tierra Insurgente”. \nTierra Insurgente is the first New York City solo exhibition by Los Angeles–based Chicana artist Sandy Rodriguez. The exhibition brings Rodriguez’s contemporary practice into dialogue with rarely exhibited maps\, manuscripts\, globes\, and codices from the Hispanic Society’s historic collection. Rodriguez works on handmade amate bark paper using natural pigments derived from minerals\, plants and insects\, as her art is rooted in Indigenous Mesoamerican tlacuilo (painter-scribe) traditions. Her paintings\, maps and codices collapse centuries of history into a single visual field\, connecting early anticolonial uprisings with contemporary struggles around migration\, policing\, racial justice\, and climate crisis. \nThis event is free of charge. Attendees are encouraged to arrive early to view the exhibition. \nGUEST PANELISTS: \nDiana Magaloni – Deputy Director at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA)\, Head Curator of the Department of Art of the Ancient Americas and Director of the museum’s Conservation Center. Specialist in Mesoamerican art and curatorial practice. \nVeronica Pesantes – Writer\, connector\, thought leader\, visionary\, producer\, curator\, advisor\, and art educator. Founder of Miami Art Hang and Decolonizing Project. Specialist in Latinx art and activism. \nRyan Pinchot – Exhibition Co-Curator and Senior Educator at the Hispanic Society. Specialist in Latin American visual culture\, decoloniality\, and environmental humanities.

SUMMARY:Recirculation Word Up: Dixa Ashariel Ramírez's MIST with Alejandro Heredia
DESCRIPTION:Word Up welcomes Dixa Ashariel Ramírez to celebrate her debut novel “Mist”\, about two overachieving professors who join forces to investigate why generations of Black women have been disappearing into a terrifying realm of eternal ice. In conversation with Ramírez will be Alejandro Heredia\, author of “Loca”. \nABOUT THE BOOK: It is 2019 and Josefina Pujols\, an overachieving professor going up for tenure at Tanner University (“The Ninth Ivy”)\, watches in dismay as social media popularity threatens to take over the academic standards she had been rigorously trained to uphold. Online shopping\, group chat\, and an alcohol problem palliate her encounters with an inbox full of increasingly ludicrous requests from her colleagues.  When Doralis Montero\, who had mysteriously quit her prestigious professorship two years earlier\, reaches out and explains the sinister reasons behind her disappearance\, Jo leaps into a research rabbit hole teeming with South American Nazi villages\, racial impostors\, and ancient AI. Despite the life-threatening risks inherent to this research project\, Jo glows with newfound purpose. \nABOUT THE AUTHOR  Dixa Ashariel Ramirez was born in Santo Domingo and raised in the Bronx. She teaches literature at Brown University and has published many works of scholarship. She now also writes about spiritual transformation\, consciousness\, and the nature of reality. Some of her work is available on her website\, open_in_newdixaramirez.com. \nABOUT THE CONVERSATION PARTNER  Alejandro Heredia is a writer from the Bronx. He has received fellowships from LAMBDA Literary\, Dominican Studies Institute\, UNLV’s Black Mountain Institute\, and elsewhere. He received an MFA in fiction from Hunter College. \nThis event is a $5 suggested donation ticket with 50 max attendees. All attendees must register in advance. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Washington Heights Chamber Orchestra: Summer Picnic Concert - Calliope Brass
DESCRIPTION:American quintet Calliope Brass collaborates with the world’s most prominent creatives to build evocative\, story-driven concert experiences for a variety of audiences. Inspired by the eponymous storytelling muse in Greek mythology\, Calliope Brass (pronounced “Kuh-LIE-uh-pea”) is most known for its innovative approach to creating interactive concert experiences. \nThis performance takes place at Bennett Park\, near the flagpole. The park contains the highest natural elevation in Manhattan\, at 265.05 feet above sea level. Bathrooms can be found in the playground area nearby. After the concert be sure to visit one of our many nearby WHCO sponsors including Tinto Tapas Restaurant\, the Fountain Bookshop\, Dutch Baby Bakery\, Tampopo Kitchen\, and Refried Beans! \nThese concerts are free and open to the public. Guests are encouraged to bring their own picnic\, blankets\, or chairs\, and we kindly ask that you help maintain the cleanliness and care of our shared public spaces. \nRain date: July 19th at 4pm at Bennett Park
