SUMMARY:Inwood Art Works Dimensions of Darkness: Dracula (Tod Browning\, 1931)
DESCRIPTION:An exploration of terror and the fantastic from Northern Manhattan.  “Dimensions of Darkness” is a four-part series exploring the horror\, science fiction and the fantastic\, with a focus on filmmakers\, writers and performers from or associated with the northern Manhattan and surrounding areas.  Curated and hosted by production and screening collective KHLOARIS and Inwood Art Works. \nDirector Tod Browning’s adaptation of Bram Stoker’s famous novel\, starring the iconic Bela Lugosi\, is one the most famous horror movies ever made. It kick-started Universal Studio’s horror cycle\, and helped turn Dracula into one of the most famous names in horror\, cinema and pop culture. In the role of vampire hunter Van Helsing was one Edward Van Sloan. Van Sloan lived for a time on 215th Street and Seaman Avenue in Inwood\, while performing on Broadway. He was one of the most prolific character actors in horror films from the golden age\, also appearing in Frankenstein\, The Mummy\, Dracula’s Daughter\, Behind the Mask\, Before I Hang and others. Preceding Dracula will be the 1931 short horror-comedy “Boo\,” made up of clips from Universal’s horror output and incredibly dated jokes. Directly following the feature will be an exclusive screening of the rare 1-minute epilogue to Dracula. Hosted by Van Sloan\, censors objected to this epilogue’s playful assertion that vampires are indeed real. It was removed from the film and was\, until recently\, considered lost. \nFrom Edgar Allan Poe’s explorations of undeveloped northern Manhattan wilderness to H.P. Lovecraft’s documented walking tours of then-Inwood Forest (which Lovecraft described as “…a forest primeval\, with winding paths\, gigantic trees\, and not a mortal in sight.”)\, the northern Manhattan area has been home to countless famous and unusual imaginations. The beginnings of the film industry were right across the George Washington Bridge in Fort Lee\, where luminaries like famed magician Harry Houdini hung from the Palisades cliffs in early film serials; the origin of the term “cliffhanger”. \n(Doors at 7:00pm) The Stuff and Dust Devil are both R-rated\, and not suitable for children. Dracula and Kiss Meets the Phantom of the Park are either unrated or PG-rated. After each screening\, we’ll hang out to connect and talk about the films. \n

SUMMARY:Fort Washington Library: Get Lit! Book Club - Lincoln in the Bardo by George Saunders
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the Get Lit! Book Club\, neighborhood edition! Each month\, New Yorkers come together to read and discuss a popular title leading up to a live event with WNYC’s Alison Stewart and the author. This month’s book is Lincoln in the Bardo by George Saunders. \nThis neighborhood book club takes place at the Fort Washington Branch. Meet fellow readers and share your thoughts about the book! Learn more and download the book at nypl.org/getlit \nThe September title is George Saunders’ Booker Prize winning novel Lincoln in the Bardo\, a moving and original father-son story featuring none other than Abraham Lincoln\, as well as an unforgettable cast of supporting characters\, living and dead\, historical and invented. \nFrom the Publisher: February 1862. With the Civil War less than one year old\, President Lincoln’s beloved eleven-year-old son\, Willie\, lies gravely ill. In a matter of days\, Willie dies and is laid to rest in a Georgetown cemetery. Newspapers report that a grief-stricken Lincoln returns\, alone\, to the crypt several times to hold his boy’s body. From that seed of historical truth\, George Saunders spins an unforgettable story that breaks free of its realistic framework into a thrilling\, supernatural realm\, deploying a kaleidoscopic\, theatrical panorama of voices—living and dead\, historical and invented—to ask a timeless question: How do we live and love when we know that everything we love must end? \nDon’t forget to register to join Alison Stewart along with the author and readers everywhere for a live conversation\, in-person or online\, on Wednesday\, September 30\, 2026\, from 6 – 7 PM.

SUMMARY:Inwood Art Works Dimensions of Darkness: The Stuff (Larry Cohen\, 1985)
DESCRIPTION:An exploration of terror and the fantastic from Northern Manhattan.  “Dimensions of Darkness” is a four-part series exploring the horror\, science fiction and the fantastic\, with a focus on filmmakers\, writers and performers from or associated with the northern Manhattan and surrounding areas.  Curated and hosted by production and screening collective KHLOARIS and Inwood Art Works. \n“The Stuff”(1985)  Genre filmmaker Larry Cohen was born in Washington Heights in 1941\, and later relocated to nearby Riverdale. He was the writer-director of the horror films It’s Alive\, God Told Me To\, Full Moon High\, Q\, A Return to Salem’s Lot\, among others. The Stuff is Cohen’s satirical sci-fi-horror-comedy about an organic dessert sensation\, sold after it bubbles up from the ground\, and later causes havok. We are pairing The Stuff with the short subject “The Haunted Mouth\,” for an entire night of dental and dessert horror. In “The Haunted Mouth\,” plaque is the evil spirit haunting a haunted house\, meant to scare children into brushing and flossing. The short film is narrated by Cesar Romero of “Batman” fame. (Mr. Romero also did some of his schooling in Riverdale.) \nFrom Edgar Allan Poe’s explorations of undeveloped northern Manhattan wilderness to H.P. SUMMARY:NoMAA Labs: CYANOTYPE printing
DESCRIPTION:(Re)turning Home: Portraits of Childhood led by FLOR KHAN is a hands-on\, reflective workshop that invites participants to look to the past as a way of understanding the present. Rooted in self-reflection\, this workshop asks participants to send a portrait of themselves in childhood to the facilitator one week before the workshop date. \nUsing cyanotype\, one of the earliest photographic printing processes\, and plants\, participants will create botanical prints that function as both image and offering: a way to connect personal memory and the natural world. The process emphasizes slowing down\, observing\, and allowing meaning to emerge through making. \nReflection Questions: \nWhat stories live in our lineages and landscapes?\nHow do cycles of nature mirror cycles of personal change?\nWhat does your childhood portrait say to your current ways of being in the world\nHow does art-making help communicate what cannot otherwise be said through words?\n(Re)turning Home: Portraits of Childhood offers an accessible entry point into cyanotype while holding space for reflection\, conversation\, and intuitive learning. \nPlease note: This workshop is on the SECOND FLOOR in NoMAA’s STUDIOS \n**Ticket sales end Friday\, October 9. ** \n

SUMMARY:Inwood Art Works Dimensions of Darkness: Dust Devil (Richard Stanley\, 1992)
\nDust Devil is equal parts sexy\, gory and metaphysical\, with themes exploring the region’s fraught racial politics of the time. A surreal\, violent horror-western from South Africa about a murderous demonic shapeshifter\, hunting lonely travelers in the desert. The film was purchased by Miramax for American distribution\, but released in a cut that director Richard Stanley was unhappy with. We’ll be presenting the “final cut\,” approved by the director. Titular Dust Devil star Robert John Burke was born in Washington Heights and appeared in a number of other horror and science-fiction films\, including Nightmare Weekend\, Robocop 3\, Thinner and No Such Thing. Mr. Burke remains a busy working character actor on the small and large screens\, and is a certified and active New York State firefighter\, a certification he earned after his rescue work during and after 9/11. \n

SUMMARY:Hispanic Society: Book Presentation with Jonathan Goldman
DESCRIPTION:Book Presentation with Jonathan Goldman\nJoin us for a conversation with Jonathan Goldman on the Puerto Rican experience in 1920s New York. \nLearn more about the book here: \nIn Hidden Histories of Jazz Age: New York: From the Suppressed to the Strange\, Jonathan Goldman offers a fresh look at 1920s New York City\, unearthing stories of everyday life and marginalized communities. In sections that intertwine entertainment\, politics\, art\, technology\, crime\, shopping\, eating\, and recreation\, the book portrays sweeping events such as the Harlem Renaissance\, Prohibition\, and immigration reform through anecdotes of individual experiences that counter the era’s popular conceptions of ballooning wealth and uproarious celebration. Jonathan Ezra Goldman’s whirlwind tour of early 1920s New York City visits an all-female police platoon\, a Black amusement park shut down before it opened\, an Arabic literary salon\, socialist Puerto Rican cigar factories\, Chinatown funerals\, lesbian cafes\, overcrowded jails\, toxic dumps\, and Ku Klux Klan recruitment offices. The grand narratives of the 1920s interweave with little-known anecdotes about well-known figures such as Marcus Garvey\, Dorothy Parker\, and Babe Ruth\, serving as a backdrop to the everyday challenges and triumphs of a city beset by crowds\, automobile traffic\, and rapidly changing technology and urban infrastructure\, as well as erased stories of injustices like Jim Crow practices\, immigration anxieties\, and the violent treatment of political dissent. These stories still resonate today\, showing that this dizzying\, exuberant ride through hidden history can help twenty-first readers see our own moment more clearly. \nJonathan Ezra Goldman is Professor in the Humanities Department at New York Institute of Technology. His previous books include Modernism Is the Literature of Celebrity and Joyce and the Law. He lives in New York City.

SUMMARY:Inwood Art Works Dimensions of Darkness: Kiss Meets the Phantom of the Park (Gordon Hessler\, 1978)
\nKiss  had Marvel comics\, action figures and all sorts of merchandising targeted to kids and teenagers. Their science fiction and horror-fueled costumes and imagery made Kiss appear as if they were really from another world. A movie seemed the natural next step\, so Kiss teamed with kids’ animation powerhouse Hanna-Barbera for one of the strangest rock band vehicle movies ever made. Kiss Meets the Phantom of the Park plays very much like a live action episode of “Scooby-Doo\,” with songs by Kiss. Kiss founder Paul Stanley was born Stanley Bert Eisen\, and was raised in Inwood\,  The feature will preceded by “Supaidâman” (“Spider-Man\,” Koîchi Takemoto\, 1978)\, a Japanese theatrical short with a very unusual take on Spider-Man. Spider-Man co-creator Stan Lee spent his formative years on Fort Washington Ave. in Washington Heights. He could often be found watching adventure films at the Loew’s 175th Street Theater (now known as the United Palace)\, This Japanese production is one of the first theatrical presentations of one of Lee’s creations.
