Hebrew Tabernacle Book Club: “The Fortuneteller’s Kiss” by Brenda Serotte (2006)

There was always the incantation: “Whoever wishes you harm, may harm come to them!” And just in case that didn’t work, there were garlic, cloves, and other means to repel the Evil Eye. But nothing warded off the polio that afflicted Brenda Serotte at 7, in the fall of 1954. This is a heartbreakingly hilarious memoir of Serotte’s growing up Sephardic among Ashkenazi neighbors in the Bronx.
