Writing Coach for Washington Heights Public School Literacy Program

Volunteer with Behind the Book, a non-profit literacy organization that inspires New York City public school students to love reading and writing. Through our innovative programs, which are part of the curricula, accomplished authors visit high-needs pre-K-12 classrooms to guide students in creating their own writing projects.  You need no experience or training to volunteer. As a coach, you’ll support and encourage students as they work on their projects.

This program needs your help in Washington Heights. To volunteer, contact volunteer@behindthebook.org with the program code. We’ll supply the address, directions, and other information when you’re confirmed:

Program 43SV-S

Date: Thursday, August 2nd
Time: 11:30 AM – 12:30 PM
Volunteer Role: Writing Coach

About the program: Susan Verde’s The Museum, about a girl whose visit to an art museum evokes new feelings in her, inspired third-graders to explore why they like a piece of art or not, and how they reached that decision. Coaches will work with small groups to finalize their written drafts explaining why they chose a painting they saw at the Whitney Museum of American Art, and describing the elements–color, shapes, light, brushwork, subject–that influenced them.
