WHCO & Word Up: Storytime with the Symphony

The Washington Heights Chamber Orchestra presents Storytime with the Symphony, a three-concert series in partnership with Word Up Community Bookshop. Each program features stories and music with thoughtful connections to themes familiar to children growing up in Washington Heights, with bilingual narration in English and Spanish. All performances take place at Recirculation, a project of Word Up Community Bookshop.

Start the new year with light, joy, and intentional calm at RECIRCULATION Word Up. Resonance returns, bringing the same energy and warmth that made our first gathering unforgettable.

Join us for this sound bath, a joyful community wellness experience where vibrations lift your spirit, soothe your mind, and reconnect you with the people around you. Let the instruments guide you, the space hold you, and the moment remind you to pause and feel joy.

This free community experience, led by Sound Facilitator Kaitlyn Power, offers an afternoon of deep listening, stillness, and frequency-based healing designed to help you reconnect, rebalance, and recharge.

Hosted by Culture Lime in collaboration with Recirculation, a project of Word Up Community Bookshop, this experience is a reminder that healing doesn’t happen in isolation. It happens when we come together and when our frequencies meet and rise.

Zine & Spaces: A conversation about how community, zines, and memory become tools for liberation

Esta conversación explora cómo los espacios comunitarios están evolucionando para dar la bienvenida a formas alternativas de digerir, compartir y amplificar el arte — particularmente fanzines. Como un medio decolonial, los fanzines ofrecen una manera de democratizar el conocimiento, reclamar independencia creativa, y centrar la comunidad como el autor primario de cómo sus historias, su arte y su sabiduria son comunicadas.

This conversation explores how community spaces are evolving to welcome alternative forms of digesting, sharing, and amplifying art — particularly zines. As a decolonial medium, zines offer a way to democratize knowledge, reclaim creative independence, and center the community as the primary author of how its stories, art, and wisdom are communicated.

Hosting this event at Word Up Community Bookshop, a space deeply rooted in community-led storytelling and cultural exchange, is an opportunity to strengthen connections with the Dominican diaspora living beyond NYC. It allows us to continue uplifting dissident experiences and to contribute to a broader movement that is redefining how we want our knowledge, memories, and imaginations to be shared and preserved.
