HVG Performing Arts Group: Weiss Kaplan Stumpf Trio

Hudson View Garden’s Performing Arts Group presents the internationally acclaimed Weiss Kaplan Stumpf Trio on Saturday, January 11 at 7:30 pm at The Lounge (note: special day and time!). The program features timeless music for violin, cello, and piano by Robert Schumann and Charles Ives. Both composers were ahead of their time: Shumann was one of the most important composers of the Romantic era with his graceful melodies and intense harmonies, and Ives, born 150 years ago, earned his renegade reputation by breaking new ground as he broke the rules in his compositions.

Combining the talents of three award-winning soloists, the Weiss Kaplan Stumpf Trio – pianist Yael Weiss, violinist Mark Kaplan and cellist Peter Stumpf – brings to each performance its distinctive fusion of authority and experience, energy, and passion. Hailed as “three strong voices, locked in sequence” (The New York Times) the trio has earned widespread critical acclaim for performances around the world, from the Kennedy Center to Wigmore Hall, and has been called “absolute magic” by Gramophone Magazine.

The Jazz WaHi Vocal Series: Sheila Jordan & Cameron Brown

Two jazz legends come to Washington Heights!

Thanks to her uncompromising approach, the singer and composer Sheila Jordan – who recently celebrated her 96th birthday! – is greatly appreciated by the demanding audience, but also by the colleagues. Her first great influence was Charlie Parker, who said that she has a million-dollar worth ear, and, indeed, later on most of her influences were instrumentalists rather than singers. Legendary are her performances based on Parker’s solos. She particularly likes playing in a duo set with bass players.

This evening she will perform with a long-standing collaborator, the celebrated bassist, Cameron Brown, a musician with exceptional technique, a great feeling for time and a clear sound. Brown has played in his long career with top jazz musicians such as Art Blakey, Lee Konitz, Archie Shepp, Chet Baker, Betty Carter and many others. Their collaboration has been going on for more than a two decades; they have traveled the world together and have recorded two highly appreciated live albums: “I’ve Grown Accustomed to the Bass” and “Celebration”. This will be an evening of music not to be missed!
