Washington Heights Jazz Festival: Ariacne Trujillo Quartet

Grammy-nominated pianist and vocalist Ariacne Trujillo Duran was born in Havana, Cuba, where she began her career as a child prodigy at the age of 4. At the age of 14, Ariacne was chosen to be a soloist with the Matanzas and Santiago de Cuba Symphony Orchestra. While working as a lead singer, dancer, and pianist in the legendary Tropicana Cabaret at the age of 18, she studied at the University of the Arts of Cuba.

In 2002 she arrived in New York City after winning a scholarship in classical composition at the Virginia Creative Arts Center. Trujillo graduated with a Suma Cum Laude degree in Music from New Jersey City University, and has a Master’s Degree in Jazz Performance in the specialty of Voice and Piano.

Trujillo has performed or recorded with legends such as Paul Simon, Paquito D. Rivera, Wynton Marsalis, Steve Gadd, Jonny Pacheco, John Scofield, Jimmy Busch, Javier Limón, Steve Turre, Brian Lynch, Lew Soloff, Taj Mahal, Diego El Cigala, Alain Pérez, Alex Blake, Jimmy Busch, Derek Trucks, Isaac Delgado, and Esperanza Spalding. She has performed at such festivals as the Red Sea Jazz Festival, Newport Jazz Festival, Umbria Jazz Festival, Montreaux Jazz Festival, Peruggia Jazz Festival, Daegu International Jazz Festival, Murton Percussion Festival, and the San Fransisco Jazz Festival.

Trujillo’s experience as an educator includes clinics at the Berklee College of Music, New York University, and Duke University, Virginia. Private tutor at the Mannes School of Music and New School of Music, and Lehman College. Since 2019, Trujillo has been an adjunct professor at the Faculty of Jazz of New Jersey City University.

Trujillo’s musical essence is full of strength, mastery, versatility, charisma, sympathy, and an energy that captivates. With her virtuosity on the piano, her powerful and flexible voice, and the freshness and originality of her arrangements, she mixes the genres of her native Cuba with passages of classical music, resulting the style that she has perfected in her more than 20 years of being in the Cosmopolitan city of New York.
