FILMS BEGIN AT DUSK!!! Announcing Inwood Art Works inaugural FREE outdoor summer cinema series, Film Works Alfresco! “Los Sures”– Monday, June 26, 2017 – 57 minutes. Documentary in English and en Español with subtitles in English. (1984, USA). In the late 70’s and early 80’s, Los Sures was one of the poorest neighborhoods in New York City. In fact, it had been called the worst ghetto in America. Diego Echeverria’s film skillfully represents the challenges of its time: drugs, gang violence, crime, abandoned real estate, racial tension, single-parent homes, and inadequate local resources.

Film Works Alfresco Presents “Gold Diggers of 1933”

BEGINS AT DUSK! “Gold Diggers of 1933,” 97 minutes. Musical Comedy with subtitles en Español. (1933, USA). Based on the hit Broadway play by Avery Hopwood, it follows the story of a wealthy composer who rescues unemployed Broadway performers with a new play. Amazingly, the film was able to be made during the great depression by Mervyn LeRoy with songs by Harry Warren (music) and Al Dubin (lyrics). However, it is most notably remembered for the creative staging and dazzling choreography by Busby Berkeley, and for Ginger Rodgers’ famous rendition of “We’re in the Money.”

Film Works Alfresco Presents “Las Adventuras de Tadeo Jones (or Tad, The Lost Explorer)”

This curated film series will focus foremost on presenting independent and popular films with local relevance that culturally resonate with the Northern Manhattan community.

New York, New York, it’s a wonderful town – especially in this classic adaptation of the 1944 Broadway musical, directed and choreographed by Gene Kelley. Featuring Academy Award -winning score by Leonard Bernstein and Roger Edens and book and lyrics by Betty Comden and Adolph Green, we follow three sailors (Frank Sinatra, Jules, Munshin, and Gene Kelly) on a day of shore leave in the Big Apple looking for fun and romance before their twenty-four hours are up.
