Film: Sangre y Arena (Classic Film; USA, 1941)

Brash young Spanish peasant Juan Gallardo (Tyrone Power) aspires to follow his dead father’s footsteps into the bullring, despite his mother’s fears. Bidding his childhood sweetheart Carmen (Linda Darnell) farewell, Juan and his friends travel to Madrid to learn the bullfighting craft. Years later, when Juan’s fame as a matador soars, he returns to Seville to marry Carmen. Soon, Juan’s head is turned by the elegant temptress Doña Sol De Muira (Rita Hayworth), and his career takes a turn

Pre-Show: Xianix Barrera Flamenco.  Xianix Barrera is an award-winning, Bessie Award–nominated flamenco dancer, choreographer, and educator based in New York City. A native New Yorker of Puerto Rican and Dominican heritage, she creates work that centers bold, tenacious women and unapologetically powerful femininity.

With a background in ballet, modern dance, jazz, percussion, and yoga, Xianix has devoted herself to the lifelong study of flamenco with masters in New York and Spain. Throughout her career, she has shared the stage with acclaimed artists. Her performances have taken her to major stages and cultural venues around the world. She also toured internationally with Noche Flamenca’s acclaimed production Antigona.

Presented in collaboration with Inwood Art Works, Cine al Fresco is the Hispanic Society’s annual free outdoor film series dedicated to Spanish and Latin American cinema.

The program begins at 6pm with a special pre-show live performance followed by the film at 7pm.
