Artist Talk: Píntame Angelitos Negros

Join us for an artist talk where Rose Deler will discuss her installation, “Píntame Angelitos Negros,” the 2024 selection for the Art on the Audubon Terrace in partnership with the Northern Manhattan Arts Alliance (NoMAA). The conversation will be moderated by the Executive Director of NoMAA, Dr. Niria E. Leyva-Gutiérrez.

This art installation, “Píntame Angelitos Negros” is inspired by the poem of the same name written by the Venezuelan poet Andrés Eloy Blanco, made famous by Mexican singer Pedro Infante. Deler grew up listening to his records, which her dad frequently played on his record player. She immigrated to the United States from the Dominican Republic as a baby, and growing up, she did not feel Dominican or American. Listening to this song as a child made her aware that she was not alone in questioning where she was in this American life. This installation will consist of 999 white ceramic angels and a single black ceramic angel, all evenly spaced and attached by wire to the gate on Audubon Terrace. Deler hopes viewers take the time to find that one black angel.

· Drop off food during business hours, 9a-5p, Monday through Friday, until Nov 15. Perishable items such as: green beans, onions, celery, carrots, yams, milk, dinner rolls, butter, as well as non-perishable items such as: instant stuffing, canned items (canned chicken stock, mixed vegetables, hams, and cranberry sauce), instant potatoes, and drinks (sodas and juices).
· Drop off cooked items such as pies, pastries, side dishes, or other warm or cold dishes or beverages, please bring them to Fort Washington Collegiate Church, 729 West 181th St, on Saturday, November 16th between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.

Hailing from Nigeria and now making waves in the vibrant music scene of New York City, Chidiebere Joseph Emmanuel is a percussionist whose beats resonate with cultural depth and artistic finesse. Under the tutelage of two esteemed Nigerian jazz icons, drummer Adewale Adeyemi, and bass player Bright Gain, Emmanuel honed his craft, gracing stages including the prestigious Lagos International Jazz Festival.
Emmanuel’s musical journey led him to Idaho State University, where he earned his Bachelor of Music degree in Commercial Music, broadening his horizons and enriching his repertoire. Immersed in the dynamic arts community, he served on the Board of the Pocatello Arts Council, nurturing his passion for both performance and advocacy.
After deepening his understanding of jazz at New York University, where he earned a Master of Music degree in jazz studies under the mentorship of acclaimed drummer Ari Hoenig, Emmanuel continues to blend traditional rhythms with contemporary flair in every performance.
