YM & YWHA of Washington Heights & Inwood: Celebrating Dr. King’s Life & Legacy

Join us for a celebration of our Washington Heights community on MLK Day!

Assemble care kits while celebrating the diversity of our community at the Washington Heights Y. Volunteer with us in the morning as we design canvas tote bags and pack warming kits, hygiene kits and food kits for our neighbors. Then stick around for our celebration of culture in the afternoon.

If you are planning on volunteering and staying for the celebration, please get a “ticket” for each- thank you!

Uptown Arts and Culture Pop Up Series: Art in Motion

Join our first Uptown Arts and Culture Pop Up of the year at the YM & YWHA of Washington Heights and Inwood. Thanks to generous grant support from our partners, this event is free for all ages!

From 2:00-4:00pm. join  us for a day of creativity and hands-on fun as families come together to build and play with a the cardboard car ramp!

Using imaginative designs and lots and lots of cardboard, we’ll transform simple materials into an exciting masterpiece.

Each family will get to design and construct their own unique cardboard car and put it to the test on our ramp.

Workshop led by Tom Pnini

At 4:00 pm, join Yaala Ballin and her band as they present some of their favorite gems of the Great American Songbook. They will be presenting and sharing about songs that tell stories of love, friendship and life.

Snacks throughout the program will be available from Tsion Cafe, a Harlem-based vegan and kosher restaurant celebrating Pan-African love, Black Israeli pride and a passion for delicious vegan food backed by a full bar with international beers and wines. Tsion Cafe is a place where the flavors of Ethiopia, Israel and New York are beautifully harmonized.

Art & Jazz afternoon for everyone!  Doors at 1:45 PM

2:00 PM – 4:00 PM  The Cardboard Studio with artist Tom Pnini

The Cardboard Studio Join us for a day of creativity and hands-on fun as families come together to build and play with a the cardboard car ramp! Using imaginative designs and lots and lots of cardboard, we’ll transform simple materials into an exciting masterpiece. Each family will get to design and construct their own unique cardboard car and put it to the test on our ramp.

4:00 PM – 5:00 PM  Yaala Ballin Jazz Band — Music & Storytelling!

Yaala Ballin and her band will present some of their favorite gems of the Great American Songbook. Songs that were written in the last century but are still relevant today. Jazz music for the people that tells stories of love, friendship and life.

Snacks from Tsion Cafe : We’re a place with Pan-African love, Black Israeli pride and a passion for delicious vegan food where we harmonize flavors from Ethiopia, Israel, and the ever diverse New York.
