Rising in the Heights: Music & Storytelling with Carmen Cancél & Jainardo Batista

Puerto Rican musicians soprano Carmen Cancél and singer and percussionist Jainardo Batista join forces with Leadlights Ensemble for an eclectic set of musical crowd-pleasers. Little ones will enjoy an interactive story featuring Margarita Engle’s “A Song of Frutas,” with musical accompaniment by Leadlights.

Free copies of the book will be available, and gifts and giveaways from local business will be raffled.  

Rising in the Heights” is a festival of outdoor arts performances curated by Leadlights in partnership with Word Up Community Bookshop. The festival celebrates the rich artistic contributions of Black and Latinx cultures and promotes children’s literacy through music and storytelling. 

This project is made possible in part with funds from UMEZ Arts Engagement, supported by the Upper Manhattan Empowerment Zone (UMEZ); and Creative Engagement, supported by The New York City Department of Cultural Affairs (DCLA) in partnership with the City Council and the Howard Gilman Foundation. UMEZ Arts Engagement and Creative Engagement are administered by LMCC.

Step back in time and discover the traditional methods and techniques used to produce this essential staple. Participants will have the opportunity to learn about the process, from churning cream to separating the butter from the buttermilk. After exploring the historical background, get ready to roll up your sleeves and create your very own batch of creamy butter to take home with you. This immersive event promises to be both educational and delicious, offering a fun and interactive way to connect with the past while enjoying a tasty treat.

Resiliencia Verde: Taller de Julio

¡Únase a nosotros para una experiencia única y práctica mientras profundizamos en la historia de la elaboración de mantequilla durante el período colonial en America. Retrocede en el tiempo y descubre los métodos y técnicas tradicionales utilizados para producir este alimento básico y esencial. Los participantes tendrán la oportunidad de aprender sobre el proceso, desde batir la crema hasta separar la mantequilla del suero de mantequilla.

Después de explorar el antecedente histórico, prepárate para arremangarte y crear tu propia porción de mantequilla cremosa para llevar a casa. Este evento inmersivo promete ser tanto educativo como delicioso, ofreciendo una forma divertida e interactiva de conectarse con el pasado mientras disfruta de una delicia sabrosa.

Inwood Hill Park – Movies Under the Stars – Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire

Grab a blanket and come enjoy a movie in a neighborhood park or playground! This summer, NYC Parks and The Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment will host family-friendly movie showings across the five boroughs.

In Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, the Spengler family returns to where it all started – the iconic New York City firehouse – to team up with the original Ghostbusters, who’ve developed a top-secret research lab to take busting ghosts to the next level. But when the discovery of an ancient artifact unleashes an army of ghosts that casts a death chill upon the city, Ghostbusters new and old must join forces to protect their home and save the world from a second Ice Age.

The following movie has been rated PG. Some Material May Be Inappropriate for Children Under 13.

Movies begin at dusk. This event is FREE and open to the public. Glass bottles and alcoholic beverages are strictly prohibited.
