Dyckman Farmhouse Museum: The Ancestor’s Future: An Afrofuturist’s Journey Through Time

Opening on April 30th at 6PM, Cheyney’s McKnight’s “The Ancestor’s Future: An Afrofuturist’s Journey Through Time,” explores community bonds, community healing, and community adaptability. McKnight speculates on a distant future while looking to the past and present to inform us on how Black Americans may get to a future where Black bodies and communities reap the full benefits of their creativity, ingenuity, resources, and labor. As part of this exhibition, Cheyney has developed a series of performance art pieces to engage with the community.

How do Black descendants of those enslaved in America envision the future of sites of enslavement? Join Afrofuturist, Artist, and Historical Interpreter Cheyney McKnight in her exhibit, The Ancestor’s Future: An Afrofuturist’s Journey Through Time at Dyckman Farmhouse Museum. The exhibit is a personally curated journey from the past of Black America to the future of the African diaspora that uses clothing and set design to center the descendants in the conversation. The public is invited to join Mcknight along with other descendants over a cup of tea in a conversation about the African experience in America’s past, how it is impacting the present, and hear speculations about the far future of the Diaspora through the lens of descendants.

About the Sinfonietta

The Orchestrating Dreams Sinfonietta is a community chamber orchestra that combines Orchestrating Dreams’ top students with college students majoring in music and professional musicians . Established in 2023, the Sinfonietta offers a unique mentorship opportunity for advanced music students and early professionals who have been historically underrepresented in the professional field of classical music. As a community chamber orchestra, the mission of the Sinfonietta is to cultivate a music community that provides a pathway from “student” to “professional” in a profession that has so many invisible barriers for black and brown young people. Led by Music Director Andrea Profili and Guest Concertmaster Eric Wyrick (Concertmaster of New Jersey Symphony Orchestra). The Orchestrating Dreams Sinfonietta is supported by the National Endowment for the Arts.

About the Artists

Andrea Profili, Music Director

Panamanian conductor Andrea Profili is music director of American Youth Orchestra, in New York City. Since 2016 she has served as executive director of Orchestrating Dreams and is a founding board member of The Bach Store.

Profili has conducted The Music Educators Workshop String Ensemble at Carnegie Hall and served as a panelist at the LA Philharmonic: Take a Stand Symposium. She has collaborated with Fundación Musical Simón Bolivar (El Sistema Venezuela) to prepare the first binational youth orchestra of Venezuela and the United States. From 2008-2011 Andrea served as conducting assistant at the Spartanburg Philharmonic in South Carolina.

Andrea Profili is a Sistema Fellow graduate of The New England Conservatory, and has a B.M in violin performance and a M.M Ed. from Converse College. She studied with Sarah Ioannides at Curtis Institute of Music SummerFest and with Mark Shapiro in the Juilliard Extension Division.

José Iglesias-Carnot, Assistant Conductor

Maestro José Iglesias is a founding member of Orchestrating Dreams and serves as conductor of the American Youth Orchestra as well as professor of violin.

A cuban native, Maestro Iglesias embarked on his musical journey under the mentorship of professors Jose Radosvek and Carmelo Alvarez de La Rosa. Continuing his studies with Emil Chalbasch, he honed his skills at the Cuban National Arts Center under the guidance of Mijail Pitulko. Additionally, he pursued orchestral conducting with Maestro Jorge Luis Betancourt, a disciple of the renowned director and professor at the Saint Petersburg Conservatory, Ilyas A. Musin. Iglesias traveled to Saint Petersburg twice for further violin pedagogy training from mentor Mijail Pitulko

For twenty years, Maestro Iglesias served as concertmaster of both the Symphony Orchestra and the Chamber Orchestra in his hometown and served as Conductor and First Violinist of the Union Quartet, contributing to various recordings for National Radio and National Television in Cuba. The quartet performed in numerous music festivals across the Republic of Cuba and internationally, earning significant acclaim at the 1994 Chamber Music Festival in Colonia Tovar, Venezuela.

Between 1999 and 2005, Maestro Iglesias conducted over two hundred concerts, leading the San Pedro Sula Chamber Orchestra, the Youth Symphony Orchestra, and the San Pedro Sula Symphony Orchestra in Honduras, Guatemala, Mexico, Nicaragua, and as a special guest at the contemporary music festival in El Salvador on five occasions.

Eric Wyrick, Guest Concertmaster

Violinist Eric Wyrick is Concertmaster of the New Jersey Symphony and has been an Orpheus Chamber Orchestra member and frequent leader since 1988.

Born in New York City, Wyrick started playing the violin at 4 years old. He attended The Juilliard Pre-College Division and later The Juilliard School, studying with Dorothy DeLay. His varied orchestral career began with the Hudson Valley Philharmonic at the age of 14. He has been Concertmaster of the American Symphony, Eos and L’opera Francais de New York, as well as the Christmas String Seminar under the direction of Alexander Schneider.

An active chamber musician, Wyrick can be heard frequently with the New Jersey Symphony Chamber Players and is a founding performer at the Bard Music Festival. He has recorded for Bridge Records, Vanguard and, with Orpheus, Deutsche Grammophon. He is the soloist on a recording of Kubian’s 3-2-1 Concerto for Acoustic and Electric Violin with the Orquesta Sinfónica of Michoacan, available online.

Orchestrating Dreams Sinfonietta es una orquesta de cámara comunitaria que combina a los mejores estudiantes de Orchestrating Dreams con estudiantes universitarios con especialización en música y músicos profesionales. Establecida en 2023, la Sinfonietta ofrece una oportunidad única de tutoría para estudiantes de música avanzados y profesionales noveles que históricamente han estado subrepresentados en el campo profesional de la música clásica. Andrea Profili, directora musical

The Hispanic Society Museum & Library inaugurates Arte en el Alto Manhattan with Dominican Yorks at the Hispanic Society featuring three Dominican-born co-curators exhibiting works created in artistic dialog with HSM&L’s collection based on their individual aesthetic approaches as well as their unique perspective as Dominican immigrants in New York. The works showcased express the complicated transnational and intercultural identity, which these artists share with over 2 million Dominican-Americans in the United States, approximately half of whom reside in the NYC Metropolitan area, particularly in the museum’s home neighborhood of Washington Heights.

Jose Luis has been performing for over thirty years and is highly regarded as a gifted harpist by his peers. Jose Luis is the only harpist to play both the classic concert harp and the Latin lever harp; which requires him to pluck the strings with two different techniques; the first uses his fingertips and the second his nails.

Jose Luis first fell in love with the sound of the harp and began studying in his early teens with Maestro Jose Serrano in Puerto Rico. He later visited Los Angeles to take private lessons with the world-renowned harpist and composer Alfredo Rolando Ortiz.

José Luis lleva más de treinta años tocando el arpa y es muy respetado por sus colegas como un arpista talentoso. José Luis es el único arpista que toca tanto el arpa de concierto clásica como el arpa de palanca latina; lo que requiere que toque las cuerdas con dos técnicas diferentes; la primera utiliza los dedos y la segunda las uñas. José Luis se enamoró por primera vez del sonido del arpa y comenzó a estudiar en su adolescencia con el Maestro José Serrano en Puerto Rico. Más tarde visitó Los Ángeles para tomar clases con el mundialmente reconocido arpista y compositor Alfredo Rolando Ortiz.
