Fort Tryon: 15TH ANNUAL STAN MICHELS MEMORIAL JAZZ CONCERT

August 5 @ 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm

Join the Fort Tryon Tryon Park Trust, NYC Parks, and the Michels family to honor the late Council Member Stan Michels at the 15th Annual Stan Michels Memorial Jazz Concert. Enjoy live jazz by local musicians in the fresh air of Fort Tryon Park.

Stan Michels represented Northern Manhattan in the City Council for 24 years from 1978 through 2001. He was a steadfast advocate for parks, allocating over $50 million for park improvements in Washington Heights, Inwood, and Harlem, including virtually every playground in his district. The promenade was named in his honor shortly before he passed away on August 1, 2008.

Dyckman Dynamics: Conjunto Guantánamo

Dyckman Dynamics is a free concert series hosted on Thursday evenings at the Dyckman Farmhouse Museum. Join Conjunto Guantánamo on August 3rd at the Dyckman Farmhouse Museum!

Conjunto Guantánamo – Ambassadors of Cuban Folklore – have arrived with a freshly interpreted, classic Afro-Cuban sound.

Lively percussion, pounding syncopated bass lines, exotic trumpet melodies, uninhibited improvisation and the sultry, dynamic lead vocal of Pepito Gomez positively scorch in a variety of vintage and original compositions. With a soulful sound layered with authentic Cuban swing and sophisticated influences, their performances sometimes transition into extended experimental Afro-Cuban improvisational jam sessions.

The band inspires thousands of New Yorkers and international fans alike to swivel their hips in the name of Latin passion. Since Conjunto Guantánamo, was founded in 2003, they’ve become highly visible on the NYC nightlife scene, performing at festivals, dance parties, events and venues as diverse as

El Conjunto Guantánamo – Embajadores del Folklore Cubano – ha llegado con un nuevo sonido afrocubano clásico.

Una percusión animada, líneas de bajo sincopadas, exóticas melodías de trompeta, una improvisación desinhibida de la voz dinámica y sensual de Pepito Gomez en una variedad de composiciones clásicas y originales. Un sonido conmovedor con capas de auténtico swing cubano e influencias sofisticadas, sus actuaciones a veces se transforman en largas sesiones improvisadas de sonidos afrocubanas experimentales.

Dyckman Discussions: Remembering Slavery and Freedom in NYC

Dyckman Discussions is a two year discussion series focusing on exploring topics in New York history, such as forced removal of indigenous people, Dutch colonization, enslaved labor, and immigration. “Remembering Slavery and Freedom in NYC,” is the fifth panel in a series of 5 taking place in 2023.

More about the panel: Led by Peggy King Jorde, this conversation will center on the Inwood Slave Burial Ground, located several blocks from the Dyckman Farmhouse Museum. This panel focuses on the legacies of slavery in New York City, and how the forced labor regime is remembered and commemorated. Dr. Jorde will speak on her work with the New York Slave Burial Ground located in lower Manhattan, and her recent efforts with the Historic Districts Council in the Bowery.

Babel Movement believes dance is a unifying language that can foster empathy, build bridges, and heal people. It is also a way for us to connect to our culture and share it with others. Our very first film festival, taking place early fall, celebrates all that dance is. We invite you to create your own films that show what dance means to you.
