Before the arrival of electricity, candles and lanterns helped illuminate New York City after dark. Throughout much of Morris-Jumel Mansions history, its rooms were lit by candlelight and fireplaces . Join us for our November Family Day and make your own handheld paper lantern as we explore how people brought light into their homes before electricity. Families can choose between a traditional cone shaped lantern or a special Morris-Jumel Mansion lantern modeled after the historic house. Decorate your lantern with colorful tissue paper then add a battery operated tea light to watch it glow! All materials provided while supplies last. This activity is designed for all ages and children are welcomed to create with the help of an adult.

Design Your Dream Guitar / Led by Gal Cohen: A hands-on art workshop where you’ll use colorful craft materials to create a mini guitar that’s uniquely yours!
Live Music: Kaki King & Tamar Eisenman
Present: SEI (Italian for “six” and also “you are”) features 16 guitars, transforming the stage and forming a constellation of sound. The heart of SEI is music composed through choreographed movement; each note in SEI born from physical motion, creating… a rich, embodied musical language that blurs the line between composition and dance. The Music in SEI travels between different reflections of our day to day life; “You are” coming to life over and over again, whether it’s through Love, Hate, Parenthood, Creativity, and/or Compassion. With only guitars, tailored tuning and synced movement by the players, SEI is a deep and playful dialogue of guitars, weaved through body language and masterful guitar skills.
Snacks for Hanukka and community candle lighting!
